| Wednesday, September 21 9:30 AM - 10:45 AM Track I: IP Video, Broadband Connectivity, Broadband Wireless, Datacasting and other Technologies Enabling the Transformation of Entertainment Broadband video to the home is the next major phase of development in the evolution of the digital entertainment industries. Creating the infrastructure and identifying the technologies for the next broadband video pipe is a challenge that could reinvent the content industry and enable thousands of content providers with direct access to the consumer. How the technology industries manage this step forward is still an open question. There are a number of completing options. While this is not a zero-sum game, in this session we will hear from a number of the providers of solutions, from the IP Video, Wireless, DSMCC to Datacasting enablers. Jasko, Chief Executive Officer, Digital Economics, Moderator Russell Zack, Chief Operating Officer, Cauldron Solutions: Russell Zack is the chief operations officer at Cauldron Solutions where he is responsible for the overall management of the company. Before co-founding Cauldron, he built several technology companies focused on large vertical industries such as automotive, media and entertainment and telecommunications. Previous industry-related experience includes his time spent as president and CEO of DragonFly Mobile Inc, a mobile data optimization and application company he founded in 2000. Russell also co-founded the interactive media company, Sigma6, in 1994. He holds a BA/BS degree in Digital Multi-Media from the University of Michigan based on a unique first-of-a-kind curriculum which was subsequently approved by the university board. Scott Dougall is the Director of Content Delivery Software for SkyStrea m, where he is responsible for all of the design, development and marketing of the zBand suite of software. Scott joined the company in 1999, bringing a lifelong experience in the broadcast industry, and years of experience in Software Development. Prior to joining SkyStream, Scott was the President and founder of Varuna Software, a Canadian based company that he founded to explore the future of broadcast. This research resulted in the development of the Jetstream Data Broadcast System, a System for managing the aggregation and broadcast of computer based media. SkyStream acquired Varuna in September 1999 and all of the employees and products were integrated. Scott now runs the Northern Campus for SkyStream, located in Thunder Bay Ontario, Canada. Scott has an MBA from the University of Michigan, and a joint degree in Computer Science and Economics from Queens University in Canada. Scott also sits on the board of directors of his familys television and radio broadcast companies.Seth Kenvin is vice president of strategic marketing and corporate development for BigBand Networks. He manages the companys corporate and product communications, as well as strategic transactions such as financings and acquisitions. Kenvin joined BigBand Networks from the venture capital firm Cedar Fund, and was involved in the founding of both organizations. Previously, he was a venture capitalist for Venrock Associates, an editor for The Red Herring magazine, and an investment banker for Bear, Stearns & Co. Kenvin holds bachelors and masters degrees in engineering from Cornell University, and an MBA from Stanford University. He serves as treasurer and a board member for the Silicon Valley / Pacific Northwest chapter of the Cable & Telecommunications Association of Marketing (CTAM).Sam Pemberton is President & CEO of California company Softel-USA, and as such is responsible for creating the vision and strategic direction for the company. Having worked for the UK-based Softel Group, in a number of pivotal strategic roles, Sam span off Softel-USA in 2001 to dedicate his energy to the Americas. Since start-up Softel-USAs XDS division has become the de facto supplier of caption and XDS preparation technology for North America, as well as a leading supplier of transmission equipment to that sector. Meanwhile, Softel-USAs iTV division has established a reputation for offering robust, reliable and yet visionary systems to the interactive television market. Sam holds Bachelor degrees in Computer Science and in Economics from Manchester (England) and an MBA from Reading (England). Having opened Softel-USA's Atlantic office in 2003, he lives in Darien, CT with his wife and son.Andy Melder, Senior Vice President, Sales, Marketing and Business Development, Intellon Corporation: Andy Melder joined Intellon as Senior Vice President, Sales, Marketing and Business Development in April 2004. With more than 24 years of experience in the semiconductor industry, Andy has a proven record of technology company growth. Prior to joining Intellon, Andy was Chief Operating Officer of Clarisay, Inc., a developer of uniquely manufactured integrated SAW filter modules for the cellular handset market. Andy was also a founding member of Microtune, Inc., (NASDAQ:TUNE), a developer of broadband, wireless RF and analog-intensive integrated devices, targeting the automotive, home networking and consumer electronics markets. During his tenure at Microtune, Melder was Vice president of Sales & Marketing and later, Vice President of Business Development. Part of his responsibilities included identifying new technology platforms for the companys strong RF and mixed-signal core competencies as well as corporate growth through the identification of strategic merger and acquisition opportunities. While at Microtune, the company expanded its presence in the cable infrastructure and home markets, as well as the wireless networking and consumer electronics sectors. Additionally, Andy was also served as Vice President, Sales, Marketing & Corporate Business Development of Tripath Technology, Inc., (NASDAQ:TRPH). He was also a management team member which led the company to its IPO in 2000. He was the Director of Business Development of Cirrus Logic Incs (NASDAQ:CRUS) graphics business from 1995 to 1996, through an acquisition of Pixel Semiconductor, where he was also Director of Business Development. Andy is a recognized expert in the communications and consumer electronics market and a frequently sought commentator on industry issues. He has spoken at a wide variety of venture & financial summits, educational forums, industry conferences and trade shows including: CES, Comdex, and the Western Cable Show. He holds a BSEE/Business from CarnegieMellon University, and a MSEE/Operations Research from Southern Methodist University. Donald A. Jasko, Chief Executive Officer of Digital Economics, is an attor ney by training. But he has, for the past twenty years, focused his energies on the economic, technological and rights management issues involved in the licensing of copyrighted content. From 1981 through 1997 Don served in various management positions at the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), in which he was instrumental in transforming the process by which performance rights in musical compositions are licensed for television broadcast. He was a key participant in the complex music industry negotiations which culminated in the new "per program" license, as well as the development of the process by which music performance and pricing data are exchanged electronically between performing rights organizations and television broadcasters. Don was also instrumental in the development of the infrastructure that supports the direct and source licensing of performance rights in musical compositions. He testified in a number of legal trials, including the "Buffalo Broadcasting" rate proceeding in Federal District Court for the Southern District of New York. He also represented ASCAP on panels at numerous national conferences. In 1997 Don resigned from ASCAP to found the content management consultancy that is now Digital Economics. As Chief Executive Officer of Digital Economics, he has consulted with numerous clients that create, produce, distribute and transmit copyrighted content. In 1998 Digital Economics initiated a consulting relationship by which it advised Solana Technology Development on the development of its digital audio watermark technology as a content identification tool for the music and entertainment industries. Don soon became a major catalyst in the merger of Solana with Aris Technologies, thereby creating Verance Corporation. Don joined Verance in 2000, with key product management, marketing, business affairs, and sales responsibilities in the music and entertainment sectors. During his tenure he led the design of Verance's ConfirMedia watermark content identification products so that they address the needs of music writers, publishers, recording artists and record labels. In addition, Don strategized the design and introduction of software applications that would leverage the value of ConfirMedia watermark content identification products for advertisers, program producers, and broadcast and cable networks. He also strategized the innovative web portal and data report licenses that form the basis of Verance's relationships with its advertising, music and programming clients, and played a key role in forging international joint ventures. Don also represented Verance in numerous public appearances before representatives of the music and entertainment communities. He returned to the leadership of Digital Economics in October 2001. |
