Games and News & Information Content Distribution The conversation is about revenue generation, advertising, subscription and download purchase. Whether its the cable, satellite and Internet SVOD/VOD industry, the music streaming and MP3 industry, the radio industry or the information content industry, everyone is experimenting with forms of pay access to content. In the cable industry, the original subscription model is being gussied up with new packages, genre choices and greater access to content. In the music industry, the goal is to strike some a necessary answer to the upside down world of illegal P2P, and in the news and content industry, subscription models are being tested out every day to determine customer appetites. The question of which subscription or download model will serve which type of product is yet to be determined. In this session however, we bring together companies who are investing their futures on the answer. As General Manager, Payne oversees all of CNN.com's operations, including business, administration, finance, marketing, product development and editorial operations. Payne also heads CNN's Content Sales/Business Development team, which is responsible for driving licensing and incremental advertising revenue for CNN News Services and the CNN News Group. Previously, Payne was Senior Vice President of Business Operations and Development for the CNN News Group, where he oversaw the business endeavors of CNNs domestic networks and internet businesses and was additionally responsible for negotiations with CNN's primary vendors and partners. Payne has been with Turner Broadcasting System Inc. since 1993, serving in a variety of positions, including Senior Vice President and General Manager of CNN/Sports Illustrated Interactive (where he was named to Street & Smith's Sports Business Journals annual "Forty Under 40" list as one of the 40 most influential sports executives less than 40 years old), Vice President of Business Affairs for Turner Sports, and Vice President and Team Counsel for the Atlanta Braves, Hawks and Thrashers. Prior to joining TBS, Payne served as an Assistant United States Attorney in Washington, D.C. Payne earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in public policy studies from Duke University, where he graduated Cum Laude. He also earned a law degree, with Honors, from Duke University.Sue Cross, Vice President / Online, U.S. Newspapers, Associated Pr ess: Cross directs AP strategy, product development, business operations and online services for newspaper Web sites that collectively reach 55 million people a month. Current projects include launch of APs Online Video Network in March 2006, a new AP Travel Online service, a hosted sports service, expansion of newspaper new media services into RSS, podcasting and other formats, and the asap multimedia pilot, creating innovative news presentations for 18-34 consumers. In 2004-2005, Cross served as APs western regional vice president and led national expansion of APs services for the growing ethnic media market. With creation of new products combining APs domestic and international reporting strengths, she more than tripled APs U.S. Spanish market in two years. Cross brings to online business development a passion for news and more than 20 years of newsroom leadership. From 1998 through 2003 she was chief of bureau for Los Angeles, APs largest domestic news bureau, overseeing international, national and state coverage from California. Cross created a multimedia newsroom and expanded APs West Coast entertainment report to emphasize real-time coverage of entertainment events. She has been a bureau chief in Phoenix, assistant chief and news editor in Chicago, news editor for Texas, and covered the oil industry, environmental issues, politics, labor and immigration as a reporter in Ohio and Alaska. Cross has a BS in journalism from Ohio State University and is active in numerous journalism boards and organizations. Worldwide, more than a billion people every day read, hear or see AP news.Ronald Frankel, President & CEO, Synacor: As CEO and president of Syn acor, Mr. Frankel has established Synacor as the leading enabler of premium services bundled into the Internet access products of cable companies, telcos, and Internet service providers. He has been instrumental in managing the Synacor team to develop key partnerships with such renowned online content providers as Encyclopedia Britannica, CinemaNow, Major League Baseball, MusicNet, and Shockwave Gameblast, while tapping Charter Communications, Adelphia Communications, Cox Communications, Netzero and most of the country's regional cable companies and telcos to bring an enhanced Internet experience to millions of subscribers around the world. In prior experience, Mr. Frankel was president of MGM Interactive, Inc. where he oversaw the division's launch of advanced games and online services designed to extend the economic and brand value of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studio's movie and television properties. Mr. Frankel has also held senior executive posts at Perks.com, Kenfil Distribution, Softview, Inc., and Natural Nectar Corp. He earned his Juris Doctor at the University of Southern California Law Center with a specialty in corporate finance and technology. He studied International Relations and Computer Science at the University of California at Berkeley.Josh Goldman, Chief Executive Officer, Akimbo: For more than 15 yea rs as a successful high-tech entrepreneur, Josh Goldman has combined his passion for breakthrough technology with his ability to create innovative business models for high-growth companies. As founding CEO at Akimbo Systems, Josh oversees all aspects of the companys sales, marketing, product development, finance and engineering functions as the company establishes its leadership position in internet video distribution. He joined Akimbo from Sprout Group, where he was the firms first entrepreneur-in-residence, working to develop business ideas for new high-tech companies, a position that lead to the founding of Akimbo Systems. Prior to Sprout Group, Josh served as president and chief executive officer of mySimon, Inc. and oversaw its growth into a major consumer e-commerce site, culminating in the sale of the company to CNET Networks for $730m. After the acquisition of the company, Josh stayed on as president of CNETs consumer division. Before mySimon and CNET, Josh held management roles at USWeb, Softbank Content Services, Apple Computer, and Phoenix Technologies. Josh received an MBA from Harvard Business School and a bachelors of science degree with honors in Computer Science from Tufts University. Throughout his career Josh has shared his knowledge with audiences at industry conferences. Joshs expertise extends to a wide range of subjects, from financial and management issues to the future of networked entertainment, consumer electronics and online media and commerce.Brad Singer is Executive Vice President of Products and Markets for PaymentOne, a leading online payment solutions provider. Brad leads the companys overall market strategy, new product initiatives, and partnership activities. Brad has over 18 years of business and general management experience in the media, payment and technology markets. Previously, Brad served as Vice President of Strategic Marketing and Content Licensing at NewsEdge, an early pioneer in content syndication, which achieved annual growth rates of over 40%, consistent profitability, and a successful IPO during his 8-year tenure (later acquired by Thomson Corporation). Brad also served as General Manager of the NewsPage.com business, an early innovator in on-line fee-based services. Most recently, Brad served as Vice President Marketing and Business Development at TeleKnowledge, a billing and e-commerce infrastructure company. Brad has also held management positions at Citibank and General Electric and served on the Dun and Bradstreet executive Advisory Board. He earned a BS in Computer Science and Economics from Tufts University, and holds an MBA in Finance from the Wharton Business School. Brad has been featured in the technology and business press, and has been a frequent speaker at industry events.Marcia Zellers is Director, AFI Digital Content Lab, American Film Ins titute. Beginning its sixth year, AFIs Enhanced TV Workshop has produced 40+ enhanced TV prototypes. AFIs eTV Workshop has become the gathering place for the American eTV creative and technology communities, and is renowned as the premier environment for eTV exploration and development. Zellers has pursued the challenge of a cutting edge, consumer-friendly marriage of television and interactivity since she joined MTV Interactives New York headquarters as a founding member in 1994. As a Senior Producer and Director heading up all MTVs music-related Web strategy, programming and development, creative direction, talent relations, and convergence programming with MTVs on-air operations, Zellers created and produced some of the earliest enhanced TV programming. Early pioneering examples, which aired on TV, include a split screen production incorporating simultaneous live Web chat with Michael Jackson, Jackson videos, and highlights of Jacksons career; the Red Hot Chili Peppers live at Madison Square Garden, with simultaneous roaming backstage cameras broadcasting live to the Web; and Janet Jackson on MTVs Total Request Live interacting on air with viewers on the Web. In 1999 Zellers moved to Los Angeles, where she spearheaded Warner Bros. Onlines Entertaindom project, one of the Webs then-highest profile entertainment destinations and the first planned broadcast-style distribution model. (Entertaindom was intended to showcase both Time-Warner and non-Time-Warner programming.) As Supervising Producer, she oversaw all aspects of the department and helped develop original programming intended for eventual cross-platform and enhanced development. Zellers has been a new media consultant for entities like New Line Cinema and composer Giorgio Moroder, and previous to AFI was the Vice President of Web Development and Creative Director for Greater Relations Worldwide, a nascent dotcom. Zellers is also a published writer and editor, and has an eclectic background that includes publishing, marketing, advertising, fundraising, and stock brokerage. |
