The AI Royalty Marketplace: Licensing, Monetization & Rev-Share

For the past two years, there has been massive technology proliferation across industries. Users have totally embraced the idea of AI as a content creation platform, from creative writing to image, music and entire film score creation. But how are the AIs “Trained” to provide these unique and even revolutionary services? The entertainment and technology industries are in a classic struggle to figure out the balance between innovation and compensation for rights and services. And without belaboring the question of “Legal Remedy,” a robust industry of AI Data Royalty, licensing, monetization and Rev-Share possibilities is emerging. The industry appears to be in the first stages of exploration and negotiation, and as with all vital industry challenges, the marketplace for AI Data is another fascinating journey in the world of innovation.

Rebecca Grossman-Cohen is the chief of staff to Meredith Kopit Levien, C.E.O. of The New York Times. She has been at The Times since 2014 as a leader across various departments, helping to build and accelerate the success of our business. As chief of staff she runs the office of the C.E.O., enterprise operations, and leads relationships and strategic partnerships with large tech partners. Prior to her current role, Rebecca led digital subscriptions growth. Rebecca is the co-chair of the Black@NYT ERG, and previously served as the chair of the Women’s Network E.R.G. at The Times. She serves on the executive boards of Digital Content Next and the News/Media Alliance, two media trade associations. Previous to The Times, Rebecca was a vice president in various roles at News Corp and executive director of marketing at The New Republic. She has also worked in strategy and fundraising roles for The Associated Press and NPR. Rebecca has an M.B.A. from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. She lives with her husband and their two daughters in Brooklyn.


Dave Davis is GM of Protege Media at Protege, which aggregates and licenses audiovisual works to AI companies for model training. Protege acquired Calliope Networks, where Dave was CEO and co-founder. Dave’s prior experience spans Wall Street, Silicon Valley and Hollywood. Most recently, Dave was Chief Commercial Officer at the Motion Picture Licensing Corporation, a private equity-owned licensing company. Prior to MPLC, Dave served in global distribution roles at NBCUniversal, Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox. Dave began his career in investment banking at Goldman Sachs and was a corporate lawyer in Silicon Valley at Gunderson Dettmer. Dave has a BA from Wesleyan University and a JD from the University of Michigan School of Law.


Howie Singer PhD is an expert on innovation and data analytics in the music industry who played a leading role in the transition to digital music delivery. At Warner Music Group, he served as SVP and Chief Strategic Technologist analyzing new business models and services. Since 2018, he has taught a graduate class on "Data Analysis in the Music Industry" at NYU. Howie spent the first part of his career at Bell Labs and AT&T where he co-founded a2b music, an early digital music start-up. His book "Key Changes: The Ten Times Technology Transformed the Music Industry," co-authored with Bill Rosenblatt, arrives September 18 from Oxford University Press.


Peter Csathy, Media, Entertainment, AI & Tech Expert, Chairman, Creative Media: Peter is a leading international media, entertainment, AI and tech expert who has worn just about every “hat” in his 30+ year career that spans both traditional and tech-driven media. He is a frequent speaker, writes a weekly column about media, entertainment, AI and tech in TheWrap, hosts a major music podcast series on Consequence, and has written several best-selling industry books. Peter is Chairman of Creative Media, a boutique media, entertainment, AI and technology business advisory and legal services firm. He previously served as CEO and President of several pioneering media-tech companies with successful exits. He also spent several years as a senior executive at Universal Studios where he negotiated over $3 billion in deals. He is a graduate of Harvard Law School and began his career as an entertainment and intellectual property attorney representing major media companies and artists, including ground-breaking rap group N.W.A.
