And the Internet is at the crossroads of content distribution - from business to business transactions, to the unique massive challenge of business to consumer information that the entertainment and media industries produce and distribute every day. In this two-part session, we will try to understand the problems of content management and the needs of the respective sectors of the industry, explore case histories, understanding how some of the larger institutions have faced up to their problems, take a close look at some of the problem solving and management tools at our disposal. Kohli, Vice President Content Security Solutions, Convera: Mr. Kohli is Vice President, Content Security Solutions, for Convera, a leading provider of content management innovations that unlock the value of digital content. Convera is a new company formed from the recent merger of Excalibur Technologies Corporation with Intel Corporation's Interactive Media Services division. Mr. Kohli served over an 11-year period in a variety of capacities for Intel, most recently as a General Manager of Intel Internet Security Services, a unit delivering content protection solutions to the media industry, and before that as lead for Intel's investment strategy in the area of e-commerce. Dr. George Friedman, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Infraworks: Dr. George Fr iedman is the founder and chief executive officer of Infraworks, a private, Austin, Texas-based company that provides advanced digital property protection technology. Infraworks allows content owners to conduct business in today's digital environment with the confidence that they have complete control over their creative and intellectual property. Dr. Friedman has more than 25 years of experience in programming, database construction, computer project management, international research, and intelligence methodologies and analysis. He was involved in the development of BITNET, an early version of the Internet, and was a strong advocate for the use of this technology in the academic community. Dr. Friedman is a well-known author of books and articles on business intelligence, security issues and international affairs, including "Why We Must Protect Intellectual Property on the Web" (c|net news.com) and "The Intelligence Edge: How To Profit in the Information Age" (Crown Publishing). Dr. Friedman has lectured widely on defense and national security issues and has appeared on numerous television and radio shows as an expert in international affairs. His work in security and intelligence led to the formation of Infraworks whose primary focus is on developing digital property protection software.Scott Burnett, Marketing Executive, Content Distribution, IBM's Global Medi a & Entertainment Industry: As marketing executive for content distribution in IBM's Global Media & Entertainment Industry, Scott Burnett is responsible for setting global strategy and establishing media distribution solutions for IBM. Prior to joining IBM, Mr. Burnett served as vice president of marketing for Liquid Audio, guiding Liquid Audio's global marketing strategy and positioning the Liquid Audio brand as a major player in digital music distribution. Prior to Liquid Audio, Burnett served as vice president of corporate brands at Warner Bros. Studios, organizing global branding efforts across company divisions. He also served as vice president of Warner Bros. International Dubbing Production Group. Previously, Burnett served as director of character voices at Disney Studios, managing the group's expansion and international development. Among Burnett's 18 years of marketing and production management experience in the entertainment industry, he has served as senior vice president of Highlight Communications, developing entertainment shopping kiosks and has also filled marketing roles at Allied Digital, VCA Teletronics and 3M Company. Burnett received his MBA from the University of San Francisco in 1985 and his Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Thomas University in Minnesota in 1981. Burnett has also taught marketing at the University of San Francisco.Larry S. Miller, President, Reciprocal Entertainment: As President of Reciprocal Entertainment, the music division of Reciprocal, Inc., Larry Miller directs all of the division's major business functions: marketing, sales, business development, client services, and support. His aim is to establish Reciprocal as the music industry's clear leader in digital rights management (DRM). Miller's original outlet for his twin passions, music and technology, was radio; shortly after graduating from Brandeis University, he became music director for radio station WCAS in Cambridge, Mass. Leaving WCAS for the start-up software company Radio Computing Services, Miller helped RCS become the nation's leading provider of music-selection software. When Scott Shannon launched New York City's hit-format station Z100 (WHTZ), Miller signed on as the stations first Production Manager and Z100 became one of the biggest, fastest success stories in radio history, capturing first place in America's biggest market only 72 days after startup. Prior to joining Reciprocal, Miller was Chief Operating Officer and co-founder of a2b music, AT&T's innovative online music delivery service. He has held senior-management posts at a number of other entertainment and media firms, including NBC and Tribune where he has focused on corporate strategy, marketing, technology management, and new-venture analysis. Miller holds an A.B. from Brandeis University and a M.B.A. from Columbia University School of Business. A frequent conference speaker, Miller is an often-quoted authority on the convergence of music and technology. He lives in New York City Trish Naudon, Senior Director of Marketing, Digital World Services: Trish Naudon joined Digital World Services (DWS) in November 2000 as senior director of marketing. She brings over eight years of experience in marketing for entertainment technology companies. Prior to joining DWS, Ms. Naudon headed the development of a strategic marketing department in the New York City office of Organic Inc., a prominent interactive marketing solutions agency. In 1996, Ms. Naudon founded PressPlay Inc., a marketing consulting firm based in New York City and Washington D.C. that specialized in entertainment technologies for digital production. During her tenure there Ms. Naudon developed, planned and implemented online and offline market strategies for a wide range of companies as they prepared to go to market with new products and services. In January 2000 she successfully sold the company and domain for a profit. Prior to forming PressPlay, Ms. Naudon served as the marketing director for in-sync corporation. Ms. Naudon was responsible for building the marketing and sales departments, developing and implementing marketing plans and forming strategic partnerships. Within 18 months of Ms. Naudons arrival, in-sync corporation grew into a multimillion-dollar company with brand prominence in the international digital video and film production industries. Ms. Naudon has also worked with a number of high-profile companies including Sony, Macromedia, Real Networks, BBC, AutoDesk, Discovery Channel, Dow Jones, Newscorp, ViewPoint and Time Warner. Through past projects, Ms. Naudon has built and maintained relationships with key print, TV and radio reporters all over the United States, Latin America and Europe. She also serves as a member of the board of advisors for the first all-female non-profit production team, Bombshell Inc., producing public service announcements for charitable causes. Ms. Naudon received her bachelors degree in international relations and art history from Mount Vernon College in Washington, DC. She has also studied anthropology and applied research at the graduate level at the Columbia School at George Washington University in Washington, DC. Larry Gussin is a DRM consultant specializing in B2B and B2C infrastructures. He has worked in the digital content industry since 1987, as an analyst, strategic marketer and program designer. From 1996-1998 he was a manager at Intertrust Technologies Corporation, where he did research and analysis work and also developed the first generation of NDA marketing documents for the pioneering DRM platform provider. From 1987-1997 he was an independent designer, analyst and marketer in the emergin B2B and B2C digital content industries, working on projects that were distributed via both the Internet and CD-ROM. His client list includes Viacom, Bell Atlantic, US West, HP, Lotus, Macromedia, DEC, Little Brown, Fidelity, 3M, nearly two dozen startups and smaller companies, and several philanthropies and non-profit agencies. Alan D. Mutter, President, Chief Executive Officer and Director, SealedMedia: Alan D. Mutter is a veteran Silicon Valley chief executive who previously led two Internet start-up companies after completing 18 years of service as a senior media executive. Mr. Mutter joined SealedMedia in November 1999, after serving as President and CEO of InstantObjects, a company that developed and marketed a software application for publishing media content on the web. Prior to InstantObjects, he was Chairman and CEO of Best Internet Communications, which eventually was acquired by Verio. Mr. Mutter was a founding Partner and the Chief Operating Officer of InterMedia Partners, a start-up Multiple Cable TV System Operator that grew within five years to become one of the 15 largest MSOs in the United States. Mr. Mutter began his career as a journalist at the Chicago Daily News and eventually moved to the Chicago Sun-Times as its City Editor. He was recruited by the San Francisco Chronicle to become its No. 2 newsroom executive and left the Chronicle to participate in the founding of InterMedia. Mr. Mutter holds bachelors and masters degrees in communications from the University of Illinois. |
