| Tuesday, May 16 Workshop 11:15 AM - 1:15 PM Session A: Digitization of the Home - The TV Hub, Computer Hub, Telecommunications Hub This workshop will address the key concepts in establishing the home as a media center, focusing on three primary technologies as the core home-media hubs: the telecommunications, the computer and the television. These are the concepts behind the mantra-of-the-moment known as technology convergence. While each technology will not move forward along a completely distinct road or even make irrelevant the other, there are fundamentally different mind-sets and market strategies at work in each which we will explore. Which will be the most practical approach to creating the home network? Will it be wireless or will all new homes be built with crawl spaces for wiring behind walls or in the ceiling? These are the crude questions for our industry experts who are in the forefront of developing never-endingly elegant solutions. Eric Chu, Group Marketing Manager, Software Products and Platforms, Sun Microsystems Mark Bridgwater, Vice President Marketing, Digital Harmony, Moderator Naresh Baliga, Vice President of Marketing, Sharewave: Naresh Baliga, 42, is Vice President of ShareWave's Marketing group. He joined ShareWave from LSI Logic where he was Director of Marketing focused on strategic marketing for new technologies for DVD and personal computer platforms. Prior to LSI Logic, he spent over 10 years at Intel Corporation in product marketing responsibilities for a variety of emerging market products including, hand-held platforms, microprocessors, and video compression technologies. Baliga holds an MBA from the Wharton School of Business and an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. Mark Bridgwater, Vice President of Marketing for Digital Harmony Technologies, a c ompany creating intellectual property dedicated to enabling interoperable digital devices and simplified consumer electronic systems. Currently Chairman of CEAs Convergence Issues Committee, creating industry awareness for converging technology in the computer, consumer electronics and communications industries. Created and chaired the first-ever 1394 Technology Pavilion at CES 1999 which hosted more than 25 companies presenting 1394-based products and technology. Speaks on Broadband in the home network, including addressing the 1999 Interactive Broadband Services Technology Summit ("Digital Harmony on 1394, Your Broadband Partner Inside the Home) and was the moderator of the Interactive Broadband panel at the 99 CEMA Fall Conference. Formerly co-founder and Vice President at Non-Stop Entertainment (home theater control automation) and founder of Internet Ventures, a producer of multi-media content to computer OEMs. A Graduate of the University of California at Berkeley (B.Sc., Product Planning and Development), and residing in the Seattle, Washington area with his wife and two children..Ed Arrington is a Director of Marketing within the New Business Group at Intel Co rporation. His business unit is focused on delivering a vastly improved means by which people will interact with the Internet. Mr. Arrington has been with Intel since 1990. Prior to his current position, he managed the Connected.Home initiative in the Intel Architecture Labs. This group evangelized Intelís vision for home computing, home networking, and high-speed Internet access. Mr. Arrington has also managed Intelís Desktop Management Task Force and worked for Intelís Network Products Division. Mr. Arrington holds a Bachelorís degree in Finance from Brigham Young University. The TSO is a corporate Sony group responsible for the strategization and alignment of Sony's efforts in the global standards arena. The US-TSO interfaces directly with European and Asian counterparts in Sony's various business groups including electronics, motion pictures, music, and computer gaming. Christian evangelizes and strategizes new core technologies internally within Sony and externally within the electronics industry. Currently Christian serves as a board member on several Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) divisions including those responsible for home network and mobile technologies. Previously, Christian has worked in the post/broadcast, computer animation, consumer electronic and information technology industries for more than 20 years. His educational background is in technology marketing and management. Eric Chu is the Group Marketing Manager for Strategic Markets in Sun Microsystems' Consumer and Embedded technologies area. In this role, he manages Sun's product strategies for driving Java technologies in four key market areas: mobile devices, digital television, residential gateways and automotive. Additionally, he has lead efforts to drive the adoption of Java technologies in various standard bodies and industry forums, including MExE for wireless phones, ISRF for screenphones, DVB and ATSC for digital television, OSGi for residential gateway, and AMIC for automotive in-vehicle multimedia. Previously, he was responsible for the Java Development Kit (JDK) product line and managed the successful launch and market acceptance of JDK 1.1. Prior to joining Sun, Mr. Chu was responsible for strategic planning for Hewlett-Packard's Enterprise Objects group and also served as the product line manager at NeXT Computer responsible for the NeXTStep operating system and OpenStep environment. |
