There used to be a time when the paper went to press, when the news magazines had weekly deadlines, and when TV newsrooms could cruise during the graveyard shift. But those days are long gone. Now news reports are coming in 24/7 from bureaus worldwide, with ace reporters looking to break their stories instantly on the Net. Internet news is redefining how the news business works and as an industry, we are just getting our feet wet. In this session, Digital Hollywood brings together a group of the most experienced news executives from the top news organizations in the country and they are writing the book on how the new news business is going to be run.

Merrill Brown,
Editor-in-Chief, MSNBC On The Internet: Merrill Brown was appointed the first Editor in Chief of MSNBC on the Internet in August 1996 after serving as acting managing editor for the July 15 launch of the service. Brown brings a combination of editorial, marketing and business experience to the MSNBC team, with a background that includes extensive experience in newspaper and magazine publishing, cable TV network management and new media. His career includes stints as a business writer and Wall Street Correspondent for The Washington Post and as Editor in Chief of the award-winning monthly, Channels magazine. Brown was a founder and senior vice president of Courtroom Television Network (Court TV.) In 1999, he was recognized by Brill's Content as on of the top 25 most influential people in media. Prior to joining MSNBC in May 1996, Brown was a media and communications consultant whose work included strategic development work at Time Inc., NBC, U S West and a score of other media ventures (1995-96). While at Time, he served as consulting senior editor of Money magazine, developing online and Internet services for the publication. He also served as acting editor for the Time Magazine Daily (the periodical's daily online news operation) and as a consulting editor for Time magazine. During that time, Brown also served as a launch consultant for NBC Desktop Video, designing the network program plan and creating the network's on-air look for NBC's business news service delivered to personal computers. Prior to that, Brown was president of Kagan Information Services and editor in chief of Baseline, heading up these two divisions of Paul Kagan Associates (1994). Brown was one of the initial strategists responsible for creating the Courtroom Television Network (Court TV). As senior vice president, corporate & program development, he oversaw program planning, advertising, promotion, marketing, public relations and development of day-to-day management of the cable network (1990-1994). From 1985 to 1990, Brown was editor in chief of Channels magazine.

Bernard Gershon is Vice President and General Manager of ABCNEWS.com, the fastest growing news site on the Internet. In this position, Mr. Gershon is responsible for overseeing all aspects of ABCNEWS.com, including editorial, content, design, production and marketing, and will supervise staffs and newsrooms in New York, Seattle and Washington, D.C. Previously, Mr. Gershon had been Vice President of ABC News Radio where he was responsible for all information programming produced for the ABC Radio Networks’ 140-million weekly listeners. Most recently, he directed ABC News Radio coverage of the death of John F. Kennedy, Jr., the impeachment of President Clinton, Operation Desert Fox, the 1998 Election and the John Glenn shuttle mission. In 1995, Mr. Gershon started ABCRadioNet.com, the first streaming media Internet site at ABC. Under his direction, the ABC News Radio staff received the RTNDA’s prestigious Edward R. Murrow award for Overall Excellence for the fourth consecutive year. Mr. Gershon joined ABC News in 1993 as General Manager of News Operations following his success as Associate Director, News and Programming for WCBS NewsRadio 88. Prior to joining CBS, he served as New Director of WOR Radio, New York. Mr. Gershon attended New York University and currently resides in New York City.

Jonathan Klein, President and CEO, The FeedRoom: The FeedRoom founder Jonathan Klein is former Executive Vice President of CBS News, where he oversaw the prime-time magazines 60 Minutes and 48 Hours, the launch of the Eye On People (now Discovery People) cable channel, and strategic planning for news.  As a news and documentary producer at CBS's Morning News, Weekend News, 48 Hours, and Public Eye With Bryant Gumbel, Klein won multiple Emmy and Peabody Awards.  He became renowned for pioneering new forms of storytelling as the creator of the innovative cinema verite series "Before Your Eyes". Klein is interested in speaking about his new company, The FeedRoom at the Digital Hollywood Conference in NY. The FeedRoom is the first broadband, interactive news network offering the latest news video from the world's most reliable sources in one easy-to-find location.







Chuck Westbrook is senior vice president and managing editor of CNN Interactive, in charge of promoting journalistic consistency in CNN.com’s U.S. and world news, political coverage and feature sections, as well as being involved in strategic planning for the division. Westbrook reports to Scott Woelfel, CNN senior vice president, general manager and editor in chief of CNN Interactive and CNNfn Interactive. Westbrook previously served as CNN Interactive’s senior producer, where he was responsible for daily coverage of international news, including special projects, breaking news and future planning. Before joining CNN Interactive, Westbrook served as supervising producer at CNN International (CNNI) from 1993 to 1996, where he was responsible for the daily editorial direction of five global newscasts. While at CNNI, he helped launch World News Americas, CNNI’s evening news schedule and the network’s first hourly business news updates. He also served as a producer for CNNI from the network’s launch in 1986 to 1993, where he produced CNNI’s first newscasts, including its first global news program co-anchored from London. Westbrook began his career at CNN in 1982 as a video journalist. While at CNN/U.S. from 1982 to 1986, he worked successively as a writer, associate producer and video tape editor for CNN’s daily news broadcasts. Before joining CNN, Westbrook was a reporter and announcer for local radio stations in Georgia and North Carolina. He is a 1982 graduate of the University of Georgia, with a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
