Eric Fitzgerald Reed, Vice President – Entertainment and Tech Policy for Verizon Communications in San Francisco, CA, is responsible for analyzing entertainment industry trends, managing telecommunications developments and emerging high-tech matters as they relate to public policy. Mr. Reed leads Verizon’s outreach to an array of Silicon Valley and Hollywood-based stakeholders in content and entertainment, digital media, information technology, and major sports leagues with vested interests in telecommunications policy, regulatory and legislative matters. In this role, he advances the company’s positions and analyzes emerging technologies, consumer and industry trends and related telecommunications policy issues.  In addition to his entertainment, high-tech and digital media responsibilities, Eric manages relations with telecommunications equipment manufacturers and suppliers, business and tech associations, consumer device and electronics companies, strategic partners, government agencies and industry groups important to the policy process.  He began his career at Verizon in November 2000 and has worked in various government affairs and legal functions since joining the company. Eric was promoted to his current position in the State Public Affairs, Policy and Communications organization in June 2012.  In the community, Mr. Reed joined the Tumml Mentorship Board in July 2013 and the Silicon Valley Leadership Group Foundation Board of Directors in March 2013. Eric previously served as Chairman on the Board of Directors of JUST TRYAN IT, a non-profit organization supporting families fighting childhood cancer, from October 2011 – March 2013. He joined the JUST TRYAN IT Board of Directors in June 2010. Eric is a member of the Consumer Electronics Association Board of Industry Leaders and is also a member of the Digital Hollywood Board of Advisors to the OTT-ConnectedTV – Hollywood Alliance.  Mr. Reed received his Masters in Business Administration from University of Maryland University College in May 2005. He also received a Masters of Science in Telecommunications Management from University of Maryland University College in 2001 and his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from American University in 1996. Mr. Reed has also completed executive management coursework at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business and the University of Virginia - Darden Graduate School of Business.

 Joseph is responsible for the development and implementation of strategic communications, public relations, messaging and media outreach campaigns to support CEA’s mission and drive media attendance and coverage of the International CES. Joseph also serves as a primary spokesperson for CEA, the International CES, and the consumer electronics industry. He is frequently cited in publications such as USA Today, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Business Week, TWICE, Dealerscope and other top trade publications as well as in Associated Press and Bloomberg news stories. He has appeared on NBC Nightly News, CNN, CNNfn, CNBC, Fox News Channel and local television and radio stations across the nation discussing issues impacting the consumer electronics industry, industry products and trends.  Joseph returns to CEA – where he previously served as a vice president – after spending six years as vice president of communications with the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), the world’s largest biotechnology trade association. Joseph spent eleven years at Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide/Washington where he managed and designed comprehensive, multi-disciplinary communications and media outreach campaigns surrounding some of the most hotly debated issues in recent years, including federal and state tax policy, natural resources management, agricultural policy and labor rights. He began his career in communications at the World Resources Institute, a non-profit policy research center in Washington, DC, where he worked in media relations and legislative affairs. Joseph also has been involved in several political campaigns and served as a media consultant and speechwriter for Washington, DC Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly.   In his free time, Joseph enjoys spending time with his wife Lisa and their two daughters. He also enjoys viewing and participating in sports, music, debating politics, playing guitar, cooking, traveling and rooting for the Dallas Cowboys and the Princeton University Tigers and Georgetown University Hoyas men's basketball teams. He is a founding member of a six man, all-dad, extremely untalented semi-acoustic band. Joseph is a 1986 graduate of Princeton University where he received a bachelor's degree in religion.

 

Michael Thornton is Chief Revenue Officer for Starz.  Based in Englewood, Colo. at the company’s corporate headquarters, Thornton is responsible for revenue growth and affiliate distribution for the Starz Networks pay television business and oversees the major Starz Distribution businesses (Anchor Bay Entertainment, Starz Worldwide Distribution, and Starz Digital Media). Thornton is also responsible for programming acquisitions for the seventeen Starz channels, on-demand, and online offerings.  Thornton previously served as Executive Vice President, Acquisitions, Business and Legal Affairs, overseeing programming acquisitions for the seventeen Starz channels and on-demand/online offerings. In addition, he was responsible for managing the strategic direction of business and legal affairs related to the acquisition of programming content as well as business and legal affairs for distribution of the Starz companies’ content with online/broadband distributors, transactional VOD/EST, and worldwide syndication of proprietary STARZ Original series and other Starz proprietary/licensed content. Prior to joining Starz in 2011, Thornton served in several senior executive positions with programming and legal responsibilities during his career, and most recently at Disney/ABC Domestic Television as executive vice president, business and legal affairs since 2005. Thornton oversaw multi-platform strategy and negotiations for post-theatrical distribution of The Walt Disney Studios’ film output and the post-network distribution of ABC Studios’ television product. Prior to that, Thornton was Senior Vice President, Programming Acquisitions for DIRECTV since 1999 where he led programming strategy, including the acquisition of all on-air acquired and original programming and negotiated successfully numerous network, local broadcast station, sports subscription, and one-off event deals.  Thornton graduated Magna Cum Laude from Dartmouth College with an A.B. degree in Economics, and holds a Juris Doctorate from the UCLA School of Law and an MBA in Entertainment Marketing and Finance from the Anderson Graduate School of Management, also at UCLA.

 

Josh Gottheimer recently joined Microsoft as General Manager, Corporate Strategy, where he leads a team focused on competitive research and analysis and core strategic issues across the company’s products, value propositions, and investments.  Before joining Microsoft, Josh served as Senior Counselor to the Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission where he was a strategic advisor to the Chairman on a wide range of policy, legal and external matters, including the communications, legislative and intergovernmental functions of the agency. He was also the first Director of Public-Private Initiatives, a new team at the Commission that harnesses the power of broadband to advance key national priorities such as jobs, health care, cybersecurity, privacy, public safety, energy, and education.  This role built on Josh’s leadership in the creation of several partnerships, including Connect2Compete, a first-of-its-kind broadband adoption initiative with national digital literacy and low-cost broadband offerings; the FCC’s cybersecurity small business initiative, between government experts and private IT and security companies; a partnership with mobile carriers on the Personal Localized Alerting Network (PLAN), a new public safety emergency alerting system; and Jobs4America, an initiative that will bring more than 100,000 new and repatriated call center jobs to the U.S. over the next two years.  Previously, Josh served as Executive Vice President, Worldwide at Burson-Marsteller, a global communications firm, where, as the number two executive worldwide, he helped lead the company’s business strategy, operations, and senior client relationships. Josh also directed the Issues and Crisis Group, Corporate, Public Affairs and Media practices, and led the firm's Key Client Relationship program, comprised of top clients from around the world.  Before joining Burson-Marsteller, Josh was Director of Strategic Communications at Ford Motor Company. His responsibilities included overseeing the company’s global corporate advertising, communication strategy and message development, and supervising the Washington, DC Public Affairs operation. Between 1998 and 2001, Josh served as Special Assistant to the President and Presidential Speechwriter to President Bill Clinton. Among others, he helped draft the State of the Union addresses in 1999 and 2000 and the 2000 Democratic Convention speech. After leaving the White House, Josh was a Senior Advisor to the United States Commission on Civil Rights. In the 2004 presidential race, Josh served as Deputy Director of Speechwriting and Senior Policy Advisor to the John Kerry for President Campaign and as Chief Speechwriter to the Wesley Clark for President Campaign.  In 2008, he was an advisor to the Hillary Clinton for President campaign. Josh is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and received his J.D. from Harvard Law School, where he was an editor of the Harvard Journal on Legislation. He was also a Thouron Fellow at Oxford. Over the years, Josh has been a regular political commentator on CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News Channel.  He has also been a contributor to US News & World Report. He has published articles in the Washington Monthly, ABA Magazine, and was the editor of Ripples of Hope: Great American Civil Rights Speeches (Basic Books, 2003), a collection of inspiring speeches from five social movements in American history. In 2011, Josh published Power in Words: Barack Obama's Speeches from the State House to the White House (Beacon Press, 2011), a history and analysis of President Barack Obama's most important pre-presidential speeches.  Josh is a member of the New York State Bar and the District of Columbia Bar and the New York Economic Club.  He founded Jobs for Jersey and Business Forward to help promote jobs in the state of New Jersey.  Josh is a founder and board member of Connect2Compete, an organization that promotes broadband adoption, and is a technology policy advisor to the Clinton Global Initiative.  He is a regular visiting professor at the University of Pennsylvania, where he has taught a course on the history of presidential speechwriting.  Josh was also a Visiting Fellow at the Center for Information Technology Policy at Princeton University.  Josh is a member of the Rutgers Business School Board of Advisers and a board member of the New Jersey Hall of Fame.  Josh lives in Wyckoff, NJ with his wife, son, and daughter; he enjoys running, tennis, and triathlons.

 

Seth Shapiro, Governor, Interactive Media, The Television Academy:  Two-time Emmy® Award winner Seth Shapiro is a leading advisor in digital media. His work includes projects with Disney, Comcast, DIRECTV, Intel, IPG, NBC, Showtime, Verizon, Universal Pictures, Goldman Sachs and a range of early stage ventures.   He is a frequent speaker on media and innovation worldwide, has served as an expert in several federal media matters, and is completing his first book on the history and future of television.  Shapiro is a Governor of the Television Academy, the home of the Emmys. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts and Chairman of Village Green Network.  As Head of Production at DIRECTV Advanced Services, Shapiro launched over 25 services on four platforms, including NFL Sunday Ticket Digital , Microsoft's UltimateTV® and TiVo by DIRECTV, the world's first major DVR platform. He was previously Partner at Media Valuation Partners, co-founder of ARC (a VOD service in 15 million homes) and a Producer at the Walt Disney Company.  Shapiro sits on the TV Academy's Digital Committee, the Annenberg Research Council and the Producer Guild's New Media Council. He is a Magna cum Laude graduate of New York University and was Adelbert Alumni Scholar at Case Western Reserve University.
