Development of Streaming Video Programming: The Launch of an Information or Entertainment Channel
What seemed like a new idea, even revolutionary, six months ago now seems practically old hat. The idea of broadband information and entertainment networks is now not only an accepted model of programming, it’s becoming a staple in Net communication. If you are among those who still think that streaming video has a problem because it is too herky-jerky and doesn’t compare to a broadcast signal, forget about it. Because, like the overnight arrival and popularity of MP3 technology, this is the year of streaming video programming. Every television and film production entity had better figure out how to implement this technology and get its content streaming if it wants to play a part in the future. This is an exciting time to be in the entertainment industry, and in this session we bring together Internet programmers producing on the front lines.

Jeffrey A. Stern, the founder and CEO of Lineup.com, spent 20 years in the upper management of several top-drawer publishing companies before launching one of the premiere web guides. After graduating Harvard University in 1980, Stern, a Los Angeles native, stayed in the Boston area and founded City Limits, an entertainment magazine. Next, Stern was off to New York, where he launched Newsweek On Campus and, later, was business manager of Newsweek magazine. Ziff Davis then recruited Stern to be general manager of its Special Markets Group. From that position he ran Unique Homes magazine and University Communications. In 1986, Stern was named president and publisher of the groundbreaking Details magazine, where he worked closely with venture capitalist Alan Patricof to turn the publication around. After leading Details into the black and establishing the brand as a major twenty-something lifestyle publication, the magazine was successfully sold to Conde Nast. Stern moved back to Los Angeles in 1990 and founded the JSA Group, which among other things published the entertainment guide for Ticketmaster. Later it expanded into publishing and direct marketing to the burgeoning Hispanic market. In 1999, JSA launched InternetMercado, a website that works in tandem with JSA’s other direct marketing ventures. Earlier this year, Stern observed that it was getting harder and harder to sort through all the new offerings on the internet. So, in February he launched Lineup Technologies to develop a site utilizing next-generation technology to allow for the easiest and most comprehensive personalization features available. The web site, Lineup.com, debuts in August 2000. Because of the breadth and depth of his experience in old and new media, Stern is often asked to address a wide range of public forums. Stern lives in Santa Monica with his wife Lisa, a pediatrician, their young daughters, Alexa and Grace, and a chocolate lab named Coco.
