Prague as Category Leader - Central Europe as Film and Television Center
The Czech Republic has reemerged as a leading force in the worldwide filmmaking industry. It is not only a destination of choice for Hollywood and European producers, it has also spawned a new wave of internationally recognized, post-Communist Era filmmakers. Prague is the second largest filmmaking center in Europe for Hollywood motion pictures, second only to London. According The Economist, Hollywood spent more than $200m in the Czech capital in 2000.We will look at why the Czech Republic has become a filmmaking center and at the businesses, projects and talents associated with the region since its resurgence. We will examine its strengths, as well as the steps that need to be taken so that the current success has lasting value. Particular attention will be paid to Prague’s digital profile, to growing its digital infrastructure, services and talent pool. And hot button issues such as how to balance global and local filmmaking interests, and art and commerce will also be discussed.
