Session co-Sponsored by the Norman Lear Center

Session B:
Film, TV & Music as Agents for Social Change - Analyzing the Role of the Artist vs. the Role of the Art
In this session which is being co-Sponsored by the Norman Lear Center, we look forward to exploring the underlying power of the creative expression in the culture. Because of the high visibility of both the artist and the art, the issues we confront in this session are constantly in the public debate. Here are the questions. What role does entertainment (global, national, or local) play in "enhancing" the human condition? What can be done to promote social entrepreneurship in the entertainment industry? What makes most global entertainment producers, barring a few exceptions, so resistant to creating value-driven, culturally-appropriate entertainment messages? Entertainment and Public Interest Campaigns: is it OK to "sneak" positive social messages into entertainment fare? What sorts of requirements for disclosure should we require? Are celebrities appropriate vehicles for crucial social issues? How can celebrities use their access to mass media in the best interests of society? Should celebrities try to be role models? When does individual artistic freedom clash with the public good? We welcome a distinguished group of panelist in discussing these themes.
