| Wednesday, October 3 9:00 AM - 10:15 AM Track B: Broadband Datacasting to the PC and TV Broadband datacasting directly into the home and office is a new segment of the industry that is about prove itself in the marketplace. Companies have varied approaches to solving the problem, but the basic issue is how to deliver a wide range of media rich broadband services to the PC or television set user. The unique proposition that these companies present is the establishment of a cost effective way of reaching millions of users simultaneously at a low cost. Some companies will go through the broadcast DTV spectrum, delivering data along with broadcast signals, while others will access users via satellite and cable companies. Broadband datacasting is about to become a factor in the marketplace. Oliver most recently served as senior vice president of network affiliates and e-commerce at Digital Entertainment Network. He was previously vice president of network development at Anschutz Digital Media, a spin-off of Qwest Communications. Prior to working at Anschutz, Oliver was the chief IP services architect at Qwest Communications, where he designed and implemented the Q.talk Voiceover IP Network, the first nationwide domestic VOIP service. He was also responsible for unified messaging, online payment, online provisioning, and other network-based enhanced IP services at Qwest Communications. Prior to Qwest, Luckett was the founder and vice president of product development at Wonderland Labs, whose product suite was the first network-based drag and drop Internet publishing system. Oliver attended Vanderbilt University and Harvard University. Jeff Huppertz is the visionary behind the dramatic growth of ClearBand, the global techn ology leader dedicated to bringing TV and video programming to broadband connected PCs. As vice-president of marketing, Huppertz has focused on developing relationships internationally with cable, telecom and satellite companies around the world to deploy this revolutionary new technology. An accomplished speaker, Huppertz has recently participated in such events as Streaming Media Europe, BCE London, EmediaTainment, ehollywood, Meyers conferences and Kagan Seminars. Huppertz has had a long and distinguished career in the broadband area. Prior to joining ClearBand, Huppertz was director of business development and strategy for Motorolas Broadband Communications Sector and was a key player in Motorolas purchase of General Instrument. Additionally, his role included strategic planning for Motorola's family of digital set-top boxes and high-speed cable modem systems as well as partnerships, alliances, and equity investments with content and technology companies. Prior to Motorola, Huppertz spent several years with the Broadband Communications Group of Scientific-Atlanta, most recently as the director of subscriber video systems. Huppertz began his broadband communications career in 1983 with Zenith Electronics Cable Television Division.Pantelis Michalopoulos, Partner, Steptoe & Johnson LLP practices before the FCC and has extensive satellite, wireless, and broadband experience. He has represented telecommunications companies in numerous licensing, rulemaking and complaint proceedings before the FCC, as well as appellate proceedings. He has also assisted clients in telecommunications matters handled by other agencies, both domestically and internationally. On behalf of EchoStar, a leading provider of Direct Broadcast Satellite television, he has participated in most of the formative proceedings that have helped shape the DBS industry and promote competition in the multi-channel video market. He has assisted Echo Star in thwarting an anti-competitive attempt by cable operators to gain control of the most valuable DBS orbital location and spectrum, and then helped EchoStar obtain the license for that spectrum. On behalf of Motorola, he has negotiated an industry-wide settlement agreement allowing the licensing of next-generation broadband satellite systems. In the area of terrestrial wireless and/or "auctionable" services, he has participated in the FCC rulemaking and licensing proceedings that established the Local Multipoint Distribution Service; he represented one of the licensees winning licenses at the first LMDS auction; he helped a foreign telecommunications company obtain a temporary authorization to set up a cell-phone system for use by the athletes and officials of its country during the 1996 Olympic games; he has extensively advised several clients in connection with bidding credits available at auction to Designated Entities and other competitive bidding rules. Shadi Mahassel is the Senior VP of Sales and Marketing for ITN SignalStream, the largest independent provider of media services incorporating broadcast and Internet technologies for the corporate, financial and broadcast and cable markets. In 1999, Mr. Mahassel co-founded and served as Chief Operating Officer for eveo- a leading provider of streaming media publishing and management solutions for businesses, with investors including Mission Ventures, Allegis Capital, Greenstone Ventures, Thomson Multimedia, Sonera Corporation, GIMV and Deutsche Bank. Prior to starting eveo, Mr. Mahassel served as the Director of Business Development at Aplio a leading manufacturer of Internet telephony appliances that was acquired by Net2Phone. While there, he established the company's distribution and sales channels in North America. Before Aplio, Mr. Mahassel founded and successfully ran firms domestically and internationally in telecommunications and wireless technologies. He is responsible for forging alliances with AOL, Microsoft, Sprint, Real, Apple, Excite and Singapore Technologies. Mr. Mahassel has a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts and has frequently spoken at such industry events as Digital Hollywood and Herring on Hollywood on video distribution models and the problems facing the industry. Chandy Nilakantan is chief technology officer and vice president of SkyStream Netw orks where he is responsible for providing strategic technical direction for the development of new products and technologies. Nilakantan served as vice president of engineering at the company from March 1998 to May 2000. Nilakantan is a recognized expert on the convergence of broadcast networks and the Internet and has spoken at NAB and Broadcast Asia about the pending changes and trends in the broadband and broadcast industries Prior to joining SkyStream in 1998, Nilakantan was vice president and general manager of the Enterprise WAN Division at 3Com. In this role, he managed 3Com's enterprise routing and remote access businesses, including R&D, product development and marketing. During his ten years at 3Com, Nilakantan served in several engineering and general management positions. Prior to his tenure at 3Com, Nilakantan was with Rolm Corporation. Nilakantan received a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT, Madras, India and a MS degree in Engineering Management from Santa Clara University, California.Brian Hickey, Vice President Marketing, Wavexpress: Mr. Hickey (47) is in charge of building the Wavexpress marketing organization to develop and execute the company's strategic vision. He was Vice President of Marketing for AT & T Broadband, where he was responsible for the marketing, sales and programming for 3 million customers. He has extensive experience in the cable and telecommunications industries with AT & T, TCI, Time Warner, TKR Cable, MetroCel Cellular, and Cablevision Industries. Dr. Diana Gagnon Hawkins, founder, Interactive Associates: Acknowledged indust ry expert in the area of interactive entertainment: Internet TV, intelligent interface design, interactive television, virtual reality, and video games. Cofounder, dotcast.com - Dotcast is a national high-speed digital network for distribution of digital entertainment, interactive services and multimedia communications. The Dotcast Digital Network packs 4.5 million bits per second (100 times the speed of a 56k modem) into a conventional NTSC or PAL TV signal and upward of 10 million bits per second of the new digital TV broadcast spectrum.
