Internet & Satellite Radio - Home, Office or Mobile - Redefining through Personalization
Everything that is great about the personalization technology and entertainment merges in the application, Internet and Satellite Radio. While it sounds exactly like regular radio, it’s content is like radio and even it’s interface functions like a radio dial, the reality is, it’s a huge leap forward in radio. Internet radio and a new technology called Satellite radio permits total personalization in an unlimited content entertainment environment. There’s no downside to it. As user access technology improves and as Satellite radio launches, these services will simply permit the realization of a complete radio experience with greater interactive involvement and ease. Ultimately, this is a winning strategy for both the record industry and the technology industry - the creation of a massively satisfied user base.

Richard Gingras, Board Member, Audio Mill: For more than twenty years, Richard Gingras has led highly regarded efforts in the development of online services and new media. These endeavors range from pioneering uses of satellite networking for television, the first applications of television signals for data distribution, and both pre-Web and Web-based online services. Gingras now assists in the development of new products, new technologies, and new companies, typically as a active board member and strategic advisor of early stage ventures. In the non-commercial arena, Gingras serves on the board of the World Computer Exchange, which harvests used computers typically headed for US landfills and places them with educational facilities in developing countries. He also works toward the development of educational and public policy programs with the communications and journalism departments of San Francisco State University, UC Berkeley, and Stanford University. From early 1996 to late 2000, Gingras led online service efforts at Excite@Home, most recently as SVP/GM of the company's consumer-focused content division, Excite Studios. With dozens of products -- from the Excite narrowband and broadband portals to Blue Mountain e-greetings -- and 600 employees, the content division generated over 160 million daily page views and garnered $250 million in annual revenue. Will Hearst brought Gingras to the pre-merger @Home Network in early January, 1996, as its founding vice president of programming with global responsibility for @Home's broadband-enabled, multimedia-focused online services. @Home was founded by the eminent venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins and a number of major cable companies to offer high-speed Internet access using the infrastructure of cable television systems. Excite@Home's broadband services are delivered to subscribers in the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia, and the Netherlands. At Apple Computer in the early 1990's Gingras led the development of the online service eWorld. The pre-Web eWorld service was built with technology licensed from AOL and introduced many innovations in online service design - in the user interface, in chat and community programming, and in presenting 3rd party branded content - many of which are now used by AOL. While at Apple, Gingras also provided the seed funding and guided the initial development of the highly-acclaimed Web site Salon, and led the development of a comprehensive web site directory which was later sold to the then-fledgling Internet search engine, Excite. Gingras's work in online services reaches back to the very beginning of interactive media in the US. In 1979, he was the creator of the first interactive online news magazine - done in partnership with CBS, NBC, and PBS and delivered to several hundred test households using interactive TV set-top box technology known as broadcast teletext. From 1987 to 1992, Gingras was the founder and president of MediaWorks, an Apple-funded startup that developed early news-agenting and executive support software for corporate clients. Gingras began his career in television, holding various positions with PBS, KCET/Los Angeles, and NBC during the 1970's.
