Timeline to Broadband Wireless - Delivering Video & Rich Media to Handhelds
The first generation of applications for delivering media rich content into a mobile environment has appeared. Video on a PDA is here, but what does that mean in the race to bring wireless video to the market as a whole. Wireless broadband is definitely the killer app that will spawn a transformation of every digital device, from the PDA and cellphone to the at home PC. What can we expect in the transition to broadband wireless? What services can we expect to see and what relationships will likely emerge between the media companies, content companies and the device or networking companies? In this session, we will take a three year look at the delivery of video into the mobile.

Dr. Florian Seiche, General Manager and Vice President, Siemens Mobile Phones USA Region: After receiving his master's degree in economics in 1991 from Cologne University, Germany, Florian Seiche joined Siemens in 1992 in the corporate procurement department in Munich. He served as a consultant for procurement programs and for Siemens' company-wide cost cutting initiatives. Also during this time, Seiche received his doctorate in economics from Cologne University in 1995. In the spring of 1997, he joined the Communication Devices (CD) group, heading the business development department of CD shortly thereafter. While in the CD group, Seiche served as team leader for the strategy and implementation plan of Siemens' global reach activities. This major initiative occurred between March and October of 1999, after which Seiche assumed his vice president and general manager position in San Diego, Calif.






Etesh Mangray has been director of corporate business development for the Walt Disney Internet Group since 1998, and is responsible or developing narrowband, wireless and Internet appliance distribution strategies and other key programs for the Group and its services, which include ABC.com, ABCNEWS.com, Disney.com, ESPN.com, Mr. Showbiz and Wall of Sound. Mangray is based in WDIG’s North Hollywood, Ca. headquarters. Mangray joined Walt Disney Internet Group after having spent four years as a manager at A.T. Kearney in Santa Clara, Ca., a global management consulting firm. While at A.T. Kearney, he headed up project teams charged with strategic planning, operation improvement and cost reduction. Among his clients were US West, EDS and Compaq. Prior to A.T. Kearney, Mangray was a consultant at Allied Signal, a global automotive, aircraft maintenance and chemicals company based in New Jersey, He was responsible for assessing various strategic investments for long-term growth of the nylon business. From 1987-1992, Mangray was a business development representative for General Electric Plastics in New York and Massachusetts. A member of the American Management Association, Mangray received a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Union College, and earned his MBA in finance/international business from the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University.

Nitin J. Shah, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Internet Products Group, ArrayComm: Executive Vice President and General Manager, Internet Products Group: Nitin joined ArrayComm in January, 2000 from Lucent Technologies, where he was Vice President in charge of Wireless Internet Applications for the Wireless Networks Group. Nitin is driving the development and rollout of i-BURST™, ArrayComm's recently announced broadband wireless Internet technology. Over the past few years, Nitin has overseen the development of a fixed Wireless Internet Access System (WIAS), as well as the development of the technologies for packet networking and radio access systems for the evolution of Second Generation wireless systems and the emerging Third Generation mobile systems. He completed his Ph.D. in Microelectronic Engineering at Cambridge University in England, and holds a B.A in Natural Sciences. Nitin was named one of Wireless Week's Top 50 Newsmakers of 2000.

William Mutual President & Chairman, POPcast Communications: Mr. Mutual has more than 10 years of experience in the digital media industry. Prior to founding POPcast Communications, he originated ITV Technologies, and, as CEO, built it into a leading provider of webcasting services. Before that, Mr. Mutual operated a postproduction and music composition studio for the film industry that included one of the first MIDI/SMPTE computer-generated recording facilities in North America. An expert in networking, video technologies, and audio engineering, Mr. Mutual is a featured speaker at Internet, multimedia and broadcasting conferences, where he lectures on video broadcasting. Mr. Mutual is a founding board member of the International Webcast Association, and has completed graduate studies at The Julliard School in New York City.










Gurminder Singh, Ph.d., CEO & President, Newstakes: Gurminder Singh has demonstrated successes in directing cutting-edge technology development, commercialization of new technology, creating new high-tech ventures and management. He has helped spin-off and mentored several start-ups, and was a founder and Director of Imagine Interactive, Inc. Prior to co-founding NewsTakes, Dr Singh served as Director at the Kent Ridge Digital Labs (KRDL), Singapore where his responsibilities included strategic planning for R&D, budget, business development and commercialization of technology. He was also Director of the Advanced Interactive Media Center. Dr. Singh specializes in media and networking technologies, and has been extensively covered in the international media. Early in his career, he managed projects in networked media, online electronic communities, interactive music and sound effects, and video processing. These projects lead to several technology break-throughs and attracted significant commercial interest. Dr Singh received his Ph.D. in Computing Science from the University of Alberta, Canada.




David Collier, Senior Director Strategy, PacketVideo, Applications & Services Division: Prior to joining PacketVideo as Creative Director, Applications and Services Division, Collier was President of Gamelet, which he founded in 1995 in response to a perceived void in online entertainment marketing. The company went on to successfully fill this space with rich-media games and promotions for a wide variety of clients, including Microsoft, Sony, Nike, Snapple, and Intraware. Collier established Gamelet with the operating profits from TripMedia Ltd, which he founded in the UK in 1991. Tripmedia developed Burn:Cycle, one of the first multimedia CD-Rom games to hit the market, which was published by Philips Media. It entered the game charts at #1, and has been translated into seven languages and three hardware formats. The game received awards including “Best Multimedia Game” at Milia and Computer Gaming World’s “Editor’s Gold Choice”. Before TripMedia, Collier had formed London’s first digital design agency, Decode Digital. In addition to his success as a company founder and as an award-winning game designer, Collier has spoken at numerous international conferences and authored three books on digital design and development.

Michael Stroud, Business Journalist & and iHollywood Forum CEO and Founder: Michael has been a professional business journalist for 18 years, is the co-founder of iHollywood Forum and iWireless World, and is a frequent moderator for Internet business forums and trade shows on digital entertainment and technology in Los Angeles and San Francisco including Penton’s Internet Everywhere, Upside’s Digital Living, Room, eTV World, iHollywood Forum, CES, NAB, Digital Hollywood, and MB5. He was recently selected by RealNetworks to interview its CEO, Rob Glaser, in a fireside chat at Digital Hollywood, Los Angeles, and moderated the keynote supersession panels at NAB, the National Association of Broadcasting. He previously covered technology as a senior writer at Investor's Business Daily, then became the Los Angeles Bloomberg News entertainment correspondent for five years, and later served as the Los Angeles Bureau Chief for Broadcasting and Cable. He also conducts media trainings for technology companies in Europe. He works as an independent journalist covering technology, wireless devices, digital entertainment and the Internet for business magazines, and is a regular contributing writer covering entertainment and music for Wired.com. His articles have also appeared in the Sunday New York Times, Business 2.0, and The Red Herring. He has a B.A. from UC Berkeley in Asian Studies in 1981, and speaks fluent Mandarin. He is also the founder of iHollywood Forum, (www.iHollywoodForum.com), the first professional networking organization based on Los Angeles dedicated to providing ongoing educational seminars and business development opportunities for entertainment and music industry executives, content creators, technology developers, investors and new media entrepreneurs.
