Content Syndication, Part II - Technology to Enable and Enhance the Business Model
In Part II of our exploration of Syndication, we will take a look how the various business models are evolving among the content owners and providers. There are a number of different industries which take part in the syndication model, from Internet portals and content sites, television and radio stations to the wireless device and application developers as well as to the Interactive TV industry, not to mention the basic creators and distributors of music, movies and news. Each has a need to both aggregate and deliver more information and content to its own community as well as to sell original content to others.

Raj Toleti, founder and Chief Executive Officer, Cytura Corporationf: As Founder and visionary of Cytura, Raj Toleti comes with years of technology experience, a proven track record, and an energy level that is surpassed by no one. His vision to develop a portal framework based on Content management and personalization is radically changing how content is being managed on the web and other interactive media. He has held senior technical management positions with Microsoft, Avio International Corporation and the Embassy Group. As a Microsoft Healthcare Consultant, he won the Excellence Award for 1998 among the Industry Practices of Microsoft Corporation. At Avio, a developer of Physician Practice Management Systems, he developed the first 3-tier windows based application running under Microsoft Transaction Server in the healthcare industry. At Embassy Group, his team brought the best-of-breed medical claims review product to market. Mr. Toleti earned his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from PSG College of Technology and his Masters in Information Technology from the University of Central Florida. Mr. Toleti has been with the company since the beginning.


Michael Terpin, Co-Founder, Chairman and CEO, Internet Wire: Michael Terpin is a 20-year high technology public relations veteran. Frustrated by the lack of truly high-tech services for public relations and marketing professionals, Terpin formed the global internet news agency (gina) in 1994 to develop Internet-based products for the PR and promotions industries. gina offered a wide range of pioneering online marketing and interactive public relations services. It was the first PR industry Web site as well as one of the first to offer hyperlink marketing, metatag analysis and search engine registration services. In 1998, gina relaunched under the name Internet Wire. In addition to his direct experience in the public relations industry, where he directed the PR activities for clients ranging from America Online and EarthLink to Playboy and XOOM.com, Terpin also was a founder of Direct IPO, one of the first Web sites to market direct public offerings. Terpin holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the State University of New York at Buffalo, as well as Bachelor Degrees in Journalism and English from Syracuse University. He is a frequent lecturer in public relations at UCLA.


Amit Goswamy, President & Co-Founder, SpotLife: Amit Goswamy has more than 15 years experience in the areas of digital media and international business. Prior to leading SpotLife, Mr. Goswamy was General Manager of the Digital Products division for Eastman Kodak Company where he was ins
trumental in the development of digital cameras, scanners and Photo CDs. It was this extensive experience in the digital media marketplace that led Mr. Goswamy to Pictra, Inc., an e-commerce startup focused on providing a destination site for digital images. Ultimately, it was the perfect combination--his executive acumen and digital media experience--that laid the groundwork for his inspiration at SpotLife. Mr. Goswamy also brings extensive business and leadership experience, having served as President and CEO of Mayasoft, a client-server application software startup, as well as spent several years as a consultant for global corporations throughout the US and Europe. Mr. Goswamy earned his BSEE from Roorkee University in India and his MBA from Stanford University.







Stephen Paul, CEO, V1M, Inc.: Steve is currently CEO of V1M, Inc., a Management and Technology Consultancy specializing in Broadband. Prior to V1M, Steve was Director of Content & Media at InfoLibria, and Chair of the Market Development Working Group at the Broadband Content Delivery Forum. He also co-founded the Forum and helped create its essence and drive its direction. At InfoLibria, Steve was responsible for Media & Entertainment industry marketing vision, programs and strategic relationships. InfoLibria’s multi award-winning products and technologies include: Content Operating Systems, Streaming Server Appliances, Network Caches, and Content Distribution Network Management Systems. Prior to InfoLibria and the BCD Forum, Steve was founder and CEO of indyMusic.com. A multi award-winning and innovative Web community, indyMusic.com led the industry (1995) in the use of content and context-driven vertical Web communities that merged music entertainment and the Web through the use of Streaming Media and personalization technologies. This laid the foundation for Webcasting technologies and techniques that are in widespread use today. Prior to founding indyMusic.com, Steve was founder and CEO of The Prism Group, a Management and Technology Consultancy that achieved profitability in six months, $3 million in sales within three years, and was eventually sold. Prior to founding The Prism Group, Steve provided mission-critical Management and Technology Consulting services to numerous Fortune 500 firms including CitiBank, IBM, and Merrill Lynch; held executive positions with: Symbolics, the world-leader in Artificial Intelligence Workstations and that dominated the Engineering, Scientific, Animation and Graphics Expert Systems space; SoloSystems, the first company to apply Expert Systems technologies to the Visual Programming Environment space; and, a Financial Software and Services firm. Steve was also well known in the Media & Entertainment industry for his creative vision and leadership, album production work for Warner Brothers, Sony, and other music labels, and for his film work for PBS and others. Steve studied Marketing and Computer Science at Temple University in Philadelphia.

Rand Bleimeister is Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of FirstLook: FirstLook launched in New York on September 15, 1999. Before FirstLook.com, Bleimeister served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for Scoop Inc., a Web-based business news and information service. At Scoop, he was responsible for the direction and development of IntelliSearch, a sophisticated online tool for business research. In October 1998, Bleimeister sold the assets of Scoop to Solutions Corporation of America, Nashville TN, and The Call Company of Newport Beach, California. Prior to Scoop, Bleimeister served as Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Virgin Interactive Entertainment where he developed and implemented all sales, marketing, manufacturing, distribution, and customer support strategies in the Western Hemisphere. During his two-year tenure, revenues from North American computer game sales increased over 600%. Bleimeister developed the company’s Internet strategy, and launched its Web site, online store, and Web-based technical support. During his career, Bleimeister has held senior management positions at major entertainment companies including Columbia TriStar where he served as Senior Vice President of Special Interest & Interactive Programming and Nelson Entertainment where he served as Executive Vice President. Bleimeister is credited with developing a revolutionary, PC-based co-op Advertising Management System at EMD, a division of Capitol/EMI Music where he served as Vice President of Marketing & Strategic Planning. Previous positions include sales and marketing management roles at Embassy Home Entertainment (acquired by Nelson Entertainment), and Warner Home Video. Bleimeister attended Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, Calif., where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science.

David Sokolic serves as Vice President of Marketing for Gizmoz. David manages the strategic marketing activities, executes strategic alliances, and counsels on positioning and corporate strategy. Sokolic has over six years of experience working in Hi Tech as both a strategy consultant, and in various operational roles. From 1990-1993, Sokolic worked at Braxton Associates, the international strategy-consulting arm of Deloitte Consulting, after which time he moved to Israel and joined HK Catalyst, a venture capital and advisory service and consulting firm. Sokolic then joined on as Product Manager with VocalTec Communications, a pioneer in the IP Telephony market, progressing to Marketing Director with responsibilities for the ISP and Telco markets. David holds a bachelor's degree with honors from the Wharton School.

Karl Kronenberger, President and Co-founder, Spunky Productions, a Division of Universal Digital Communications: Karl has led Spunky Productions as President and co-founder since September of 1998, through the May 2001 acquisition of his company by Universal Digital Communications, Inc. (UDC). His concentrated experience in management, interactive media, technology licensing and corporate law has been essential to the emergence of Spunky Productions as a leading digital media company providing family entertainment for both Internet and television distribution. Karl is active within the industry and has negotiated business agreements with top companies including Macromedia, Adobe, Excite@Home, Universal Pictures, Artisan Entertainment and Sony. He has also been highly visible through his speaking engagements, which include entertainment and technology panels at Internet World, FlashForward2000 and Onscreen. Animation Magazine named Karl and his brother Craig two of the Top 15 Guerrilla Web Entrepreneurs for 2000. Heading a company that is focused on family entertainment has given Karl extensive experience with the privacy issues related to marketing to children over the Internet. Karl has assisted other kid's web development companies in navigating this difficult area. This has included directly lobbying key decision makers in Congress and in the Department of Education before the issuance of regulations under COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) in Fall 2000, to ensure a fair and practical implementation of this important information collection practices law. Karl received a B.A. from the University of Notre Dame and a J.D. from the University of Cincinnati College of Law, and he is licensed to practice law in Georgia and Ohio.
