And the addition of the Internet to the equation has only opened up a host of new creative opportunities. It is a world without limit and in this session, we bring some of the major innovators in the field. This is about learning, about education and about fun. In this session, we hope to not only get a glimpse of the most original educational projects in the industry, but to take a look at new and groundbreaking technology as well. Charne, Moderator Ken Goldstein, Executive Vice President and Managing Director, Disney Online: Ken Goldstein is executive vice president and managing director of Disney Online, the business unit of the Walt Disney Internet Group that produces the No. 1 entertainment destination for kids and families on the World Wide Web. Responsible for all creative, technical, marketing, and financial initiatives surrounding the presence of the Disney brand on the Internet, Ken oversees development of the corporate site www.disney.com; all of the divisional Web sites of The Walt Disney Company; the celebrated venue for tools and information www.family.com; and the highly successful subscription service Disney's Blast. Prior to joining Disney in November 1998, Ken served as Broderbund Software's vice president of entertainment and founding general manager of the company's Red Orb Entertainment division. Commercially and critically acclaimed titles on the Red Orb label included "Riven: The Sequel to Myst," by Cyan Productions, "Warlords III," by the Strategic Studies Group (SSG), "The Journeyman Project 3: Legacy of Time," by Presto Studios, and "Prince of Persia 3D," by the Red Orb Entertainment Studio. Before the formation of Red Orb Entertainment at Broderbund, Ken was responsible for all aspects of development on the highly acclaimed Carmen Sandiego series, leading the product family from aggregate worldwide sales of 2.5 million units in 1992 to over 6 million units in 1997, while supervising brand development through three television series, a motion picture deal, and broad expansion of an international merchandising program. Other award-winning titles his teams at Broderbund produced include "In the 1st Degree," "Alien Tales," and "The Last Express." Prior to joining Broderbund, Ken worked as a designer/producer at Philips Interactive Media and Cinemaware Corporation, and for several years as a screenwriter and television executive. A graduate of Yale University, he has been a volunteer with Free Arts for Abused Children and Olive Crest Treatment Centers and served on the board of trustees of Full Circle Programs, a residential treatment and family services agency. Jean-Marie Winikates, Director of Business Development, Barbie/Girls Division, Mat tel, Inc.: As director of business development, Jean-Marie Winikates oversees all aspects of Mattels interactive brand marketing opportunities. She initiates strategic planning, revenue programs and partnerships for Mattels Girls Interactive Group, which includes the Barbie, Generation Girl, Diva Starz, and Whats Her Face brands. In addition to developing strategic alliances to increase brand franchise recognition, industry rankings and media valuations, Winikates has established and perpetuates online advertising sponsorship programs for Mattels web sites. Prior to joining Mattel, Winikates was director of online business development for Havas Interactive, a Vivendi-Universal Company, and its core brand divisions, Blizzard Entertainment, Knowledge Adventure, Sierra On-Line and Flipside, Inc. Previously, she developed and oversaw the strategic marketing initiatives to launch Engage Games Online, a start-up entertainment portal, as a premium service through America Online and other Internet service providers. Winikates extensive experience also includes sales and marketing management positions in the technology field at CMP Media, Inc., Media Vision, and Ingram Micro. Winikates holds a Bachelors of Business Science Management from Pepperdine University.David Vogler, President, David Vogler, Inc.: A graphic artist gone interactive, David Vogler has for the past several years immersed himself in the design and production of online entertainment for kids. David is currently re-launching Seussville.com, the official web site for Dr. Seuss. For the better part of the internet boom, David was the Vice President, Creative Director at Nickelodeon Online. He was responsible for a variety of new media initiatives including the web sites for Nickelodeon, NickJr, Nick at Nite and TV Land. During Davids tenure, Nick.com was consistently ranked the number one site for kids ages 6 to 14, and was the recipient of numerous industry awards for web design and content. Previously, Vogler served as the Vice President of Kids' Content at Disney Online where he worked on the acclaimed "Disney Blast" web site. He named, designed and packaged the site while providing the creative heart of the product. Vogler also designed and implemented the corporate identity for the entire business unit and maintained its visual integrity. In addition, Vogler conceived and produced original non-Disney content, including the wildly popular "D-Toy" franchise. Prior to his Disney days, Vogler was the man at Nickelodeon Consumer Products responsible for such notorious and award- winning creations as the flatulent "Ren & Stimpy" plush toys and "Gak," a garishly colored goo that literally became the hands-on manifestation of the Nick Brand. Vogler's background includes freelance art direction of print humor that includes work for SPY Magazine, Jim Henson Productions and Marvel Comics. David is a Visiting Professor at New York's School of Visual Arts where he has taught in the MFA design program and has lectured at the American Film Institute in Los Angeles. In the fall of 1998, Vogler was a featured presenter at the AIGA Brandesign conference in Manhattan and the DOORS 5 conference in Amsterdam. Vogler also lectures at Carnegie Mellon University's Human Computer Interaction Institute. Vogler is a frequent contributor to the numerous design journals and has had his pop culture essays published in Sex Appeal, (Allworth Press), The Digital Designer, (Watson-Guptill) and Education of an E- Designer (Allworth Press).Philip Cruver is currently President of Kidz Online, a nonprofit educational organiza tion which is a pioneer in digital peer technology training. He is the founder of three start-up companies in the transportation, wind energy, and petroleum industries and has served as CEO of two public companies. Phil has written over 70 articles published in national magazines and trade journals on the subject of emerging technologies and is the holder of two patents granted by the U. S. Patent and Trademark Office. Nortel Networks recently became the signature sponsor for Kidz Online and is constructing a MetaPOP for connecting various educational and research institutions throughout Northern Virginia using its next generation optical network equipment. This will provide very high bandwidth fiber optic connectivity into the Nortel Networks Kidz Online Digital Studio and Internet Center located at the Center for Innovative Technology building in Herndon, Virginia. This next generation distribution channel complements the innovative peer technology-training content that is being produced by and for kids at the Digital Studio.Jim Charne has provided legal representation for clients in all phases of interactive software entertainment since the mid-1980s. He entered the industry in 1983 as a producer of Atari 2600 games for Activision and served as President of the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences from 1999 to early 2001. A frequent speaker on legal and business topics at forums including Digital Hollywood, Game Developers Conference and E3, Jim is admitted to practice law in CA, NY, and NJ. He studied at the George Washin gton University, where he was also Adjunct Associate Professor of Economics. For four years he served at the World Bank, where he worked on industry and finance projects and co-authored Success in Small and Medium Scale Enterprises, published by the Oxford University Press in 1987. He has lectured at several institutions, including the U.S. Foreign Service Institute. His research has been published in the Journal of Conflict Resolution and a book of readings on development policy. His writings are recommended readings at several universities in courses in economic development and international politics. In 1986 he founded USA International, Inc., a project development and consulting services company. The company played an important role in promoting private infrastructure development and private provision of public services in the emerging economies. Ashfaqs writings on the subject have appeared in several business publications, including the Institutional Investor. He chaired an international business summit in Washington, DC in 1996, and special sessions at business conferences in New York City, Chicago and Orlando. Ashfaq won several awards as a child artist. As an educator, he became concerned about the risks of creativity diminishing with age. He founded the International Child Art Foundation (ICAF) in 1996 and serves as its Executive Director. Under his stewardship, ICAF has become a world leader in childrens art and creativity programs, exhibitions and festivals. In 2000, he launched the "Washington Forum on the Future of Our Children." Ashfaq has traveled to over 30 countries, invited by the First Ladies and arts organizations. He is a featured speaker at several international conferences, most recently at the Changing and Young People in a Changing World in Agrigento, Italy, the World Summit on Media for Children in Thessaloniki, Greece, and the Education Technology 2001 in Arlington, Virginia. The Peter Drucker Foundation has awarded Ashfaq the Hesselbein Fellowship for 2001. Ashfaq is an active member of the National Art Education Association (NAEA) and the International Society for Education through the Arts (InSEA). He serves on the Advisory Board of the International Child Resource Institute (ICRI), Berkeley, California. He is Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts, United Kingdom. Ashfaq has a Ph.D. in Economics from the George Washington University, an MPA from the University of Punjab, and a BA from Government College, Lahore.Arthur Pober, President, Entertainment Software Rating Board: Dr. Pober is the President of the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). The ESRB is the rating board established by the Interactive Digital Software Association (IDSA) to provide parents and other consumers information necessary to make informed purchases of interactive entertainment software. Prior to establishing the ESRB, Dr. Pober was Vice President and Executive Director of the Children's Advertising Review Unit (CARD, the self regulatory arm of the children's advertising industry), for the Council for Better Business Bureaus. CARU was established in 1974 to promote truthful and accurate advertising, which is targeted at children. Dr. Pober has enjoyed a long career in the field of education, having held positions such as the Principal of Hunter College Elementary School, the Director of Special Programs for the Board of Education for the City of New York, and the Director of Gifted and Talented Programs for 26,000 children in New York City. Dr. Pober has worked extensively in the public and private sectors to create and develop programs and learning materials for children, and has lectured throughout the world on topics ranging from education, the media, and the role of self-regulation. As the President of ESRB, Dr. Pober was recently made a corresponding member of the European Advertising Standards Alliance, a non-profit organization set up in 1992 to represent the views of the advertising self-regulatory bodies in Europe. He also serves as the United States representative to the European Institute for the Media. In addition, he is a participant in the UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management's plan to Study the Individual and Social Effects of the PC/Internet Technology. Finally, Dr. Pober was invited to a closed, experts meeting for the European Parliament on Self Regulation and Rating Systems. He serves as consultant for ABC's One Saturday Morning, Squigglevision and Nick Jr. Magazine. He is also on the advisory boards of the Jewish Museum and Child Magazine. He received his doctorate in Educational Psychology and Organizational Development from Yeshiva University and holds two masters degrees in Counseling and Education Administration. |
