Interactive TV/DTV Software & Programming Solutions
There are two sides to the set-top box, Internet, Interactive TV and DTV introduction, one is to have the hardware in place, the other is to have ready the programming solutions that make it useful and dynamic for the TV viewer. Whether it is going to be called ETV Enhanced Television, TVs with Interactive Programming, multi-plexed TV viewing, or Customized or Personalized TV, there are a group of companies who have set the stage for this next TV generation, and we are pleased to have them represented at this session.

Charlie G. Tritschler, Vice President of Marketing, Liberate Technologies: Mr. Tritschler is vice president of marketing, with responsibility for all product strategy, marketing communications, developer services, and creative services. His role includes guidance of the strategic direction of Liberate and its core products, the company’s highly successful PopTV Partner program, and the communication of these efforts to all external audiences. Previously, Tritschler was the director of product marketing at Liberate. In this position he oversaw the development and shipment of Liberate's first information appliance software products, which have evolved into the leading standards-based software platform for the delivery of enhanced television services. Before joining Liberate, Tritschler held support, sales, and marketing positions for nine years at Apple Computer, Inc. In his role as the product line manager for the PowerBook division, he was responsible for the PowerBook 500 series in 1994, and oversaw the PowerBook 1400 in 1995, and the 3400 family of notebooks in 1997. He began his career as a marketing consultant in Boston, working for companies such as Kodak, Reebok, and ConAgra to develop growth strategies for new business. Tritschler is a founding member of the Northern California Chapter of the Cable Television Association of Marketers, serving as the group’s vice president. He is a frequent speaker at industry events, including Kagan Conferences, the Western Cable Show, and the TV Internet Conference held by the National Association of Television Arts & Sciences. Mr. Tritschler received his B.A. in Economics from Dartmouth College in 1987.

Michael Collette, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, Worldwide, OpenTV: As Senior Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, Worldwide, for OpenTV, Michael Collette is responsible for the global positioning and marketing of OpenTV's interactive television architecture, applications and media solutions. Michael has served in a variety of executive positions in the technology and entertainment industries. Most recently, Collette was President and Chief Operating Officer of California-based MediaTech Strategies, a strategic consulting firm he founded in 1996 focusing on emerging NewTVÔ applications, including companies involved in personal video recording (PVR), video-on-demand (VOD) content, interactive television (iTV), and iTV portal development. Under his leadership, the company provided advanced product design, strategic planning and acquisition searches for entertainment companies, communications equipment manufacturers and system operators, including such companies as Scientific-Atlanta, Philips, Samsung and SONY. Previously, he was Senior Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for Los Gatos, California-based ICTV, Inc., where he was responsible for the development of a new corporate strategy that dramatically revitalized the company and resulted in a significant impact on the cable industry's approach to interactive television and Internet on TV. Earlier, Collette served as Director of Satellite Services for General Instrument, where he was influential in the company's digital television product development, systems implementation and satellite strategy. Michael's experience in the entertainment industry began in 1992 when he developed new marketing tactics and business plans for TVN Entertainment. Previously, he also served as Director of Consumer Sales and Marketing for Playboy Entertainment's Satellite Television Group. Michael's international savvy extends to the Far East. Having lived in Australia and Japan, Collette developed competitive economic development bids for the State of Queensland, Australia, and conducted global studies of public sector efforts to stimulate high tech entrepreneurship in Tokyo. He holds a Masters of Business Administration from UCLA's Anderson Graduate School of Management and undergraduate degrees in English and Social Science from University of California - Berkeley.

Ed Graczyk, Director, Marketing & Communications, Microsoft TV Platforms: Ed Graczyk is director, marketing and communications, for the Microsoft TV Group at Microsoft Corporation. In this capacity, Graczyk is establishing Microsoft as the leading producer of software that enables network operators, consumer electronics manufacturers and television content providers to create and deliver enhanced TV services worldwide. Graczyk is responsible for communications, public relations, branding, positioning, advertising, partner co-marketing and events worldwide for the Microsoft TV family of software products. He assumed his current role with the Microsoft TV group in October 1999. Since 1991, Graczyk has held a number of marketing and sales management positions at Microsoft, both at the Redmond, Wash. headquarters and the New York City field office. His past responsibilities include: marketing lead for the award-winning MSN™ MoneyCentral personal finance service, marketing lead for MSN Communications Services, where he launched MSN Messenger Service and MSN Web Communities, public relations lead for the Web Essentials and MSN divisions, entertainment marketing manager for MSN, and corporate account sales management. Prior to joining Microsoft, Graczyk spent six years with UNISYS Corporation. Graczyk served in various sales and product management positions, with a focus on customers in the banking, securities and insurance industries. Graczyk recently spoke on behalf of Microsoft TV at the Kagan Interactive TV Summit, Digital Hollywood, DigiTrends Camp Interactive, PBS Technology Conference 2001 and Broadcast Asia (upcoming). In 1994, Graczyk received the Corporate Account Executive of the Year Award at Microsoft. Graczyk is also a member of the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing. Graczyk has a bachelor’s degree in science from the Boston College School of Management, where he holds a triple major in marketing, computer science and economics.

Manu Mehta, Founder, President and CEO, Metabyte Networks: Mr. Mehta founded Metabyte, Inc. in 1993 as an entertainment and information technology firm. He grew the company's licensing and consulting business into a profitable enterprise. He invested company profits to incubate the development of the MbTV technology. MbTV was spun out as a separate company called Metabyte Networks, Inc. in 1999. Metabyte Networks is a personal TV technology and services company, developing personalization software and personal TV services that leverage the emerging capabilities of digital broadcast delivery systems. Investors in Metabyte Networks include THOMSON multimedia and Seagate. Before founding Metabyte, Inc., Mr. Mehta was with Texas Instruments from 1984 to 1993 in various marketing, business development and management positions. Prior to Texas Instruments, he was a design engineer with Micro-Link Corporation, an industrial control company. Mr. Mehta holds a BS degree in Electrical Engineering and an MS degree in Computer Engineering from Ohio State University.

Ian Tapp, Vice President Market Development, NDS Americas: In 1996 he transferred to NDS Americas Inc. and now heads the market development activities of NDS within the Americas region. Mr. Tapp graduated in Electronic Engineering from the University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom in 1982 and in 1995 obtained a Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing. He has spent 15 years in the field of digital communications systems, initially in design and development and latterly in product marketing and business development. In 1992 he joined the Advanced Products Division of NTL responsible for the product marketing of their video compression products including the award winning System 3000 Digital Television products. In 1995 the Advanced Products Division was acquired by NDS and Mr. Tapp was appointed the marketing director for this group.







Caroline Beck, President and CEO, Mixed Signals Technologies: Caroline Beck, an expert in developing and implementing corporate business and marketing strategies joined Mixed Signals in 2001 as Chief Executive Officer, President. Over the past 25 years, Beck has held top posts with leading technology and entertainment companies, where she gained extensive experience in bring new products to market and guiding them to success. Most recently, Beck served as Chief Operating Officer of Intertainer, Inc., the leading provider of entertainment-on-demand services in the U.S.. At Intertainer, Beck was responsible for overseeing all day-to-day activities of the interactive content service, which included growing the company from its start-up base to commercial deployment in both the cable and DSL sectors. Previously, Beck served as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Sony Pictures Entertainment’s Game Show Network. In that role, she was key to developing new business opportunities for the network, specifically spearheading technology initiatives for new programming content creation and mass interactivity. During the earliest stages of interactivity, Beck was Sr. Vice President, Marketing at Starsight Telecast, and guided the national launch of the world’s first interactive on-screen television program guide. Beck began her career in advertising at Chiat/Day, where she embraced technology in its infancy on the Apple Computer business, later moving to Microsoft for numerous product launches.

Arthur Orduna, Vice President Marketing, Canal + U.S. Technologies: With more than 15 years of experience in the media, interactive TV and embedded systems industries, Orduna is responsible for creating and executing integrated and product marketing plans targeting digital interactive and enhanced television networks. Orduna is a long-time player in the interactive television industry. He helped develop partnerships and business relationships at the executive level with key companies in the interactive television industry such as Bell Atlantic, US West, Tele-TV, Americast, HongKong Telecom, Phillips, MEI/ Panasonic, Mitsubishi, and Motorola. As the vice-president of marketing for DIAB-SDS, a wholly owned subsidiary of ISI, Orduna was responsible for developing strategies targeting consumer electronics and other embedded software markets that generated record revenues. Before joining the Canal+ Technologies’ team in Cupertino, California, Orduna led the marketing team responsible for the embedded consumer electronics market for Wind River, the embedded software systems industry leader. Orduna is a long-time supporter and participant in the open standards-based initiatives, Orduna helped lead early marketing efforts to embed Java™ technology in Interactive TV, wireless networks, and interactive appliances. Orduna holds a MFA degree from NYU and a BA in Theatre Arts from Cornell University.

Bob Gager is director of product management for PowerTV, Inc. Bob calls upon fifteen years of business, technical and management expertise to supervise an assortment of program and project management initiatives in support of the company’s interactive iTV rollouts. Bob is focused on delivering the Power TV ® Software Platform into the market, directing multiple software product development teams, while bridging the gap between engineering, QA and product marketing/sales divisions. As primary liaison, Bob is a seasoned problem solver and dynamic organizer who successfully generates productivity through individual contributions and leadership of others. Bob is also skilled at contract management and working with customers and OEM’s to insure timely delivery of solutions within budget. Prior to his current assignment, Bob held director and technical management level positions with several Silicon-Valley based technology companies including iPrint.com, Flashpoint Technologies, Inc., and T/Maker Company, Deluxe Corp. He began his career as a test systems engineer for Lockheed Missiles and Space Corporation, eventually rising to lead a product team designing control systems for the International Space Station. Bob, who resides in Cupertino, California, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in electronics engineering from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
