| Monday, October 1 2:30 PM - 3:45 PM Sun Microsystems Multichannel Content Distribution Developers Workshop From Broadband Internet and Wireless to ITV & the Set-Top Box Session III: Digital Content Archiving and Retrieval The digital revolution has enabled content providers with many capabilities that were totally un-imaginable in the analog world. The use of digital technologies and tools promise benefits in streamlining production and management of digital content. In addition, multi-channel multi-device distribution capabilities are helping content providers realize their long-awaited dream of "produce once -- play everywhere". The content is digitized, stored hierarchically and retrieved in the appropriate format upon request by various devices - all the way from palmtops to digital theatres and high definition devices, over various networks. However, archiving, storing and retrieving digital content is not as simple as it sounds. There are challenges in hierarchical storage, real-time transcoding, security and rights management, meta-data creation and management. In addition, preserving the integrity of digital information and ensuring the persistence for digital works are extremely important. This session discusses distinction between content preservation and archiving. It also discusses various challenges and solutions in digital archiving and retrieval of content.
