Mobile Video & TV – Content Innovation, Technology & Platforms that Make the System Go
To fully appreciate and understand the parameters and momentum behind the move to broadband and video on mobile platforms, having a grasp of the technology and devices which drives the system and define how the consumer will be able to experience mobile video, film and TV. In this session, we bring together a group of the most knowledgeable executives in the mobile technology and device space, all members of companies who are playing a formative role in the evolution of the mobile broadband universe. The explosion of content on mobile is simply a reflection of how great the device, the enabling technologies and the networks are and there is no question that with the advancements being made on all fronts, the ability for the consumer to appreciate and experience high quality mobile is not in question.

Paul Scanlan is co-founder and current Chief Operating Officer of MobiTV, Inc., the parent company to MobiTV. Since launching MobiTV in 2000, Scanlan has played a critical role in managing the companies’ growth from a start-up to the first and only global television network for cell phones. During his tenure, Scanlan has been instrumental in launching MobiTV on three of the nations’ leading cellular carrier networks, and in securing MobiTV’s current line-up of over 20 well-known channels through negotiations with some of the nations’ largest television content providers. Additionally, Scanlan manages all of the companies International efforts and operations where he has played a key role in generating the initial momentum and hiring the teams to run the new MobiTV offices around the world. Scanlan is a frequent speaker at industry trade shows and conferences, and is widely respected in the mobile entertainment industry for his pioneering efforts in mobile multi-media.








Mahesh Balakrishnan is Vice President and Head of Business Development, Acquisitions and Investments at Thomson’s Technology Division, where he has global responsibility for corporate development activities for one of Thomson’s three divisions. He was previously Managing Director and CEO of Infineon Ventures North America and headed Infineon’s venture capital activities in North America. He represented Infineon Ventures on the boards of Calypto Systems, MontaVista Software and Zolo Technologies. Prior to Infineon Ventures, he was Vice President, Business Development & New Business Creation at Philips Semiconductors, where he had global responsibility for starting new businesses in emerging high-growth areas. One of his internal start-ups in wireless communications was named one of the top wireless start-ups of 2002. He started his career as a researcher in Philips Corporate Research and headed a department conducting research in digital video, wireless and IP communications technologies. He has had a leading role in the development of digital television standards and technologies including the MPEG and the U.S. Digital Television standards. He has been an adjunct professor at Columbia University and is a recipient of a Teaching Award from Rensselaer for outstanding contributions to their teaching program. He has a B.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay, an M.Eng and Ph.D from Rensselaer in Troy, NY, all in electrical engineering, and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business where he was named a Palmer Scholar.

Elizabeth Brooks, Executive Vice President, Marketing, GoTV Networks Elizabeth Brooks is an expert in marketing strategy and has been working at the crossroads of technology and entertainment for many years. Brooks came to GoTV from Buy.com, where she was Senior Vice President, Business Development, in charge of content and revenue relationships across the Buy network of companies. Prior to Buy.com, Brooks headed North American creative operations for BMG Music Publishing, the world’s fourth largest music publisher. She was a founding management team member at the original Napster, Inc., where as Vice President, Marketing, she managed the Napster brand from one million to over forty million registered users. Prior to Napster, Brooks was Senior Director, A&R, at Sony Music Entertainment. She began her career in the music business as a club and college radio DJ and went on to work for several labels in marketing and A&R capacities. Brooks is a board director of Xingtone, Inc., and a member of the Grammy Awards Alternative committee. She attended Bard College’s early admissions school, Simon’s Rock, and holds a B.S. in Mass Communication from Emerson College.

Rutton Ruttonsha, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Business Line Personal Entertainment Solutions, NXP Semiconductors: Rutton Ruttonsha was appointed Vice President and General Manager of the Business Line Personal Entertainment Solutions within Philips Semiconductors in January 2003. Prior to taking over the responsibility for the Personal Entertainment Solution business he held the position of Vice President and General Manager of the Business Line Audio Solutions. Rutton has held a number of senior management positions at Philips Semiconductors between 1998 and 2001, including Business Design Manager for the Consumer Business and Commercial Manager for Discrete Semiconductors. Rutton joined Philips in 1983 and worked in various positions in Philips Components and Amperex. Prior to joining Philips he worked at International Rectifier in California, USA. Rutton holds a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) from Walchand College of Engineering, India, and the Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from The University of Southern California, USA.






Clifford H. Friedman, a Senior Managing Director of Bear Stearns, is responsible for Partnership investment activities. Mr. Friedman brings over 25 years of venture capital, investment, financial, technical and media expertise to the Fund. Mr. Friedman currently serves as a director to the following companies; Net Insight AB, TVONE, Vivid Logic, Widevine Technologies and Origin. Additionally Mr. Friedman has served as a director of and/or advisor to the following companies: Savvis Communications, MTM Technologies, CSTV, Fathom Online, Capital IQ, Active Health Management, The Street.com, Network 24, TV Azteca (Mexico’s second largest broadcast network), Netscape and InterTrust. From January 1996 through August 1997, Mr. Friedman served as a Senior Vice President of Universal Studios where he was responsible for the creation and development of the Studio’s New Media Group. Mr. Friedman’s responsibilities at Universal Studios included working with all of Universal’s divisions to develop, execute and create investments, acquisitions, strategic alliances, multimedia applications, international expansion and other new business opportunities. From February 1995 through January 1996, Mr. Friedman served as Vice President--Strategic Development at NBC, where his responsibilities involved leveraging existing franchises to create new business opportunities. While at NBC, he helped to form the joint venture between NBC and Microsoft (MSNBC) and formulated NBC’s Latin American strategy. From 1990 through January 1995, Mr. Friedman was a Senior Managing Director in the Media and Technology Group at Bear Stearns. During this period he was ranked an "All American Analyst" by the Institutional Investor Magazine poll of Wall Street institutional clients. While at Bear Stearns, he published "New Age Media--The Merging of Media, Communications, Computing and Consumer Electronics" in 1993 and a follow-on publication, "New Age Media II," in 1994. During this period, Mr. Friedman also led Bear Stearns’ efforts to raise $225,000,000 to launch the New Age Media Fund, Inc. and helped advise several major media and technology companies. From 1985 through 1990, Mr. Friedman was a Senior Securities Analyst in the High Technology Group at Cyrus J. Lawrence Inc. From 1981 through 1985 he was a Senior Engineer at Hazeltine Corporation’s Wheeler Research Laboratory where he was involved in the analysis, design, fabrication and testing of advanced communications systems, designed simulation software and developed new business areas. Mr. Friedman earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Polytechnic Institute of New York, a Masters of Science in Electrophysics from Polytechnic Institute of New York and a Masters of Business Administration in Finance and Investments from Adelphi University. He has been awarded two patents in the field of communications and has been published in various international technical and financial journals.
