Richard L. Gelfond is Chief Executive Officer of the IMAX
Corporation, one of the world's leading entertainment technology companies which specializes in immersive filmed entertainment technologies. He has been a senior executive of IMAX since acquiring the company in 1994 with his partner Bradley J. Wechsler. Mr. Gelfond and Mr. Wechsler presided over IMAX Corporation’s IPO in June 1994. Under their joint leadership, key strategies have been implemented to grow the IMAX network around the world, rapidly expanding the IMAX footprint from 100 theatres in 19 countries in 1994 to more than 350 theatres in 42 countries today. As part of the effort to expand the reach of the IMAX brand, the Company launched a commercial growth strategy that included the development of a new theatre system, specifically designed for use in multiplexes, as well as a new, proprietary film technology -- IMAX DMR® -- which makes it possible to convert any 35mm CGI, animated or live-action film into IMAX’s 15/70mm format. More recently, the company rolled out its new digital projection system which delivers The IMAX Experience® and helps drive profitability for studios, exhibitors and IMAX theatres by eliminating the need for film prints, increasing programming flexibility by allowing theatres to increase the number of movies shown on IMAX screens. Prior to acquiring IMAX in 1994, Mr. Gelfond specialized in leveraged buyouts and venture capital investments, where he helped many businesses grow through his unique entrepreneurial and management skills, as well as introducing companies to new sources of capital. Earlier in his career, he was involved in retail management and investment banking, and also served as a corporate attorney specializing in mergers and acquisitions.
