Hollywood 2.0 - Content & Commerce: New Rules for the Film, TV, Broadband & Mobile Video Industry - Deals, Advertising and Commerce Since its beginnings, technology has transformed the entertainment industry and media industries. And while there were always the naysayer, predicting such gems such as the end of Hollywood with the invention of TV or that cable would doom the TV industry, the entertainment industry has more durable than they could have ever suspected. In fact, with the coming of new technologies, the entertainment and media industries has emerged as a global powerhouse. And the more things change, the more they stay the same. Entertainment and media are being challenged once again - Hollywood 2.0 is now upon us with an entirely new set of technologies with new rules of engagement. In this session, we are delighted to welcome a group of frontline players in the Hollywood 2.0 transformation. Joe Michaels, Senior Director, MSN & Bing, Microsoft: Joe Michaels oversees media partnerships for Microsofts MSN and Bing divisions covering the categories of film, television, music, video and sports. Since 2001, he has negotiated and managed digital content partnerships with major and emerging media companies including NBC Universal, Fox, Disney, Mark Burnett Productions, Generate, Reveille, BermanBraun and National Geographic. Michaels was instrumental in forming Microsofts global online video network, MSN Video, as well as the MSN Originals initiative to commission and license made-for-broadband content. In 2009 Michaels developed a partnership with BermanBraun to create Wonderwall.com which quickly became one of the most visited celebrity websites. Michaels helped create the Live Earth webcast in 2007, the most watched online entertainment event in history. Prior to Microsoft, Michaels co-founded Nexchange Corporation and worked as a television producer. He holds a graduate business degree from The Wharton School and a bachelors degree from Georgetown University.
Marcelo Camberos is the Vice President of Business Development and Managing Director of International at Funny or Die. Previously, he was Vice President of Business Development and Marketing of HSM Group, one of the largest executive learning media companies in the world. At HSM, he was responsible for all of the companys business development and marketing initiatives and was a founding member of the World Business Forum, which he helped launch in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago in 2004. Camberos began his career as a venture capitalist at JPMorgan Partners where he focused on early-stage media investments. He earned his undergraduate degree from Duke University and an M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.
Jared Tobman, Executive Vice President of Digital and Production, is responsible for producing Reveilles digital entertainment programming, and he oversees physical production of a diverse roster of television programming. In the past 3 years, Mr. Tobman has served as Executive Producer of 9 online branded entertainment series for sponsors such as Kraft (5 Minute Office Workout with Bob Harper and Chef to the Rescue with Cat Cora); Toyota (Appetite for Life with Andrew Zimmern); Microsoft (Its Everybodys Business with Jack and Suzy Welch); Post Cereals (That Takes Grape Nuts with Kenny Mayne); and additional series sponsored by Subway, Volvo, and Cingular. In television programming, Mr. Tobman currently serves as Co-Executive Producer of Breakthrough with Tony Robbins for NBC and The Buried Life for MTV. He served as Co-Executive Producer of NBCs American Gladiators and My Dad Is Better Than Your Dad; Bravos Shear Genius and Tabathas Takeover; ABC Familys Switched; Showtimes American Candidate; in addition to series on MTV, Tru, TLC, and The N. Prior to joining Reveille, Mr. Tobman produced documentary-style television programs in some of the worlds most challenging and dangerous environments. His first producing job was as a field producer for Paramount Television's syndicated adventure series, Wild Things, which profiled people who work with wildlife in the world's most remote locations, including Indonesia, South Africa, India and Nepal. Mr. Tobman also served as a producer of the first two seasons of CBS Emmy Award-winning The Amazing Race, for which he produced episodes in New York, Tunisia, India, Alaska, South Africa, and Australia. Following that he served as Supervising Producer of ABC's Profiles from the Front Line, a documentary series created by Jerry Bruckheimer and Bertram van Munster (Cops), which profiled the men and women serving in the United States Armed Forces. Mr. Tobman is a graduate of Princeton University. Jared Tobman lives with his wife Johanna and his sons Miles, Theo & Eli in Santa Monica, California.
Roy Bank, President, Television, Merv Griffin Entertainment: As President of Television of Merv Griffin Entertainment, one of the industries most respected and historically rich production companies, Roy Bank is leading a resurgence of the late Merv Griffins brand. A seasoned entertainment industry veteran, Bank has seen his creativity and leadership flourish while working with such well-known companies as Mark Burnett Productions, Reveille Productions and alongside TV icon Woody Frasier. Some of his notable successes are Martha, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?; (on which Bank served as both the Creator and Executive Producer); and The Apprentice. His expertise on both the business and creative sides make Bank the perfect leader to take Merv Griffin Entertainment to the next level. In 2005 Bank took the role as Head of Development, Production and Corporate Operations for Mark Burnett Productions (MBP), where he quickly began work on The Apprentice and Rockstar: INXS. While holding that position, the company experienced record growth with the launch of new prime-time shows, daytime programming and the expansion into on-line content. In addition to the continued success of its prime-time programming strategies, MBPs 2005-2006 saw the premiere of Martha, the new Martha Stewart daytime program which was picked up for a 4th season, and Gold Rush on AOL, the largest internet event initiative to date. It was also in 2006 that Bank was named to The Hollywood Reporters Next Generation, Hollywoods Top 35 Executives 35 and Under. In 2007, Bank orchestrated a major shift in the type of programming that MBP is known for with the introduction of two new prime-time network game shows. First, in early 2007, Bank served as Creator and Executive Producer of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, which premiered on FOX as the most watched game show premiere in television history as well as being one of the most syndicated programs internationally. Later in the year, Bank again created and Executive Produced a new game show, Amnesia, starring Dennis Miller for NBC. Before joining MBP, Bank worked in development at Reveille Productions, which was founded by the current Co-Chairman of NBC, Ben Silverman. It was there that he teamed with MBP to produce The Restaurant, the first fully ad-supplied network television show in 30 years. A graduate of University of Pennsylvanias Wharton School of Business, Bank began his career in the finance industry and gained notoriety in the field with being one of the founders of the first Internet bank in the United States. From there he changed career paths and took his business acumen to the entertainment industry, starting his career producing for television icon Woody Fraser which proved to be the beginning of a very successful career in entertainment.
Eric Berger, Senior Vice President, Digital Networks, Sony Pictures Television: Eric Berger is the senior vice president of digital networks at Sony Pictures Television where he oversees Crackle, Sony Pictures Entertainment's premium online video network. In this position, Berger supervises content development and programming, marketing and distribution for Crackle. Berger also manages the day to day operations of the digital networks group. These responsibilities include overseeing product, video operations and engineering as well as Crackle's programming and multi-platform distribution functions for original series, television shows and movies. Berger joined the company in 2006 as vice president, mobile entertainment. He guided SPT's mobile games division from 17th to 5th place in the market, and he successfully launched video services on all available mobile operators including Verizon, Sprint and AT&T. Prior to Sony Pictures, Berger was Vice President of Strategic Planning at Time Warner Inc. (AOL, HBO, Turner Broadcasting, Time Inc., Time Warner Cable, and Warner Bros.) where he was responsible for wireless initiatives and the creation of new digital growth businesses. His efforts included shaping the company's overall mobile strategy, including driving investment, acquisition and business development.
Sharon Waxman, Editor in Chief, TheWrap: Sharon Waxman, Editor in Chief, is an award-winning journalist and best-selling author, a former Hollywood correspondent for The New York Times and a leading authority on the entertainment business and media. Before the Times, she was a correspondent for eight years for The Washington Post. She started out as a foreign correspondent, covering Europe and the Middle East for a decade. She is the founder and CEO of The Wrap, and the author of two books, including, Rebels on the Backlot: Six Maverick Directors and How They Conquered the Hollywood Studio System.
