Brian Marler, Senior Vice President, Houlihan Lokey (LA): Senior Vice President in Houlihan Lokeys Los Angeles office, where he is a member of the Media & Telecom Group. His experience includes valuing closely held and publicly traded businesses and providing financial advisory services in a range of transactions including mergers, acquisitions, spin-offs, sales, repurchases of minority and controlling interest blocks, and other corporate finance activities. He has also provided valuations for tax and financial reporting purposes, gift and estate tax purposes, ESOPs, and dispute analysis. He has performed complex financial analyses and has broad experience in valuing intellectual property in the media and entertainment industries. He has worked extensively with leading media, sports and entertainment companies, including Sony Pictures, NBC, DreamWorks, Warner Bros., Comcast, Major League Baseball, House of Blues, Gray Television and Six Flags. He also speaks and writes frequently on the media, sports and entertainment industries and co-authored: Intellectual Property Valuation. Intellectual Property in Business Transactions. Before joining Houlihan Lokey, Mr. Marler was a controller at Polygram Filmed Entertainment, responsible for financial reporting, film accounting, and budgeting. Earlier, he was a member of Spelling Entertainments corporate finance group, responsible for accounting, budgeting, strategic analyses and SEC reporting. Mr. Marler earned a B.S. in business administration/finance from California State University at Northridge and an M.B.A. from the University of Southern California. He holds the designation of Chartered Financial Analyst and is registered with FINRA as a General Securities Representative (Series 7 and 63) and a Limited Representative Investment Banking (Series 79).
Jeremy Miller, Principal, Strategic Game Consulting: A video game sector business intelligence, market research and analysis expert with over a decade of industry experience, he has worked with leading publishers and developers including Valve Software, Activision, THQ, Warner Bros., Konami, Sega, and Electronic Arts in creative design, marketing, project management and consulting roles. As principal of SGC, he has developed sophisticated data analysis and integration tools he uses to guide clients through complex strategic challenges. With more than 25 years of avid gaming experience combined with engineering and business backgrounds, he has learned to bridge the gap between creative, marketing and management stakeholders. In 2008 he began working with long time gaming industry research firm DFC Intelligence and serves as one of its senior analysts. He has been quoted in numerous publications including USA Today and Forbes and speaks regularly at business school programs and industry events. Jeremy holds an MBA degree from UCLA and a B.S. in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering from Cornell University. In 2009 he published his book Excel Breakthrough: Dramatically Increase Your Speed Productivity and Efficiency. He is also a certified executive coach as well as graduate of the Coaches Training Institute.
Stephen Prough, Co-Founder & Managing Director, Salem Partners: In addition to his management responsibilities for Salem Partners two main businesses, Mr. Prough oversees the firms media and entertainment investment banking practice, focusing primarily on mergers and acquisitions advisory services. Mr. Proughs clients include Hearst, Sony, Liberty Media, JP Morgan, RHI Entertainment and a number of independent media companies. Since founding Salem Partners, Mr. Prough has completed more than 25 mergers and acquisitions transactions involving media and entertainment companies. Mr. Prough serves on the investment committees of Salem Partners Wealth Management and SW Contego, a fund of hedge funds established by Salem Partners Wealth Management in 2008. Mr. Prough is also on the Professional Advisory Counsel of the Motion Picture and Television Fund. Prior to founding Salem Partners, Mr. Prough was a Vice President in the Media and Communications Investment Banking Group of Furman Selz LLC. At Furman Selz, Mr. Prough advised major media companies such as Time Warner, Sony and New Line Cinema. Mr. Prough is a graduate of Harvard College, where he majored in Government and was a Harvard Scholar.
James Roberts III, Esq., Founder, Global Capital Law Group PC: Founded the Global Capital Law Group PC in early 2008 upon the dissolution of his previous firm, Praxis LLP. He continues what he started: a law firm with a strategic consulting firm for companies rich in intellectual capitalhere and elsewhere in the world. Previously, he ran a strategic consulting firm, The Atlantic Advisory Group, after practicing law with White & Case and Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison. Before that he was with SRI International (formerly Stanford Research Institute), advising clients on trends and international development. Seth Shapiro, Principal, New Amsterdam Media LLC: Principal of advisory firm New Amsterdam Media LLC and a partner at the Opportunity Management Company. He is also a Founder of ARC: The A&R Channel, a VOD network available in 17,000,000 US cable homes via Comcast. As Head of Production at DIRECTVs Advanced Services Group, Shapiro managed over 20 service launches across four platforms, designed the groundbreaking NFL Sunday Ticket® Highlights On Demand Service, and was Production/Content Lead for DIRECTV/TiVo, the world's first major DVR platform. He is a two-time Emmy® Award winner and a leader in the profitable application of new technology to emerging business models. He has managed digital initiatives with the Walt Disney Company, Comcast, Universal, Time Warner, Viacom, DIRECTV, TiVo, HBO, Sun Microsystems, Goldman Sachs and a variety of startup, venture and private equity partners. He is also a member of OVP Venture Partners' Technology Advisory Group, the Television Academy's IMPG Executive Committee, the PICNIC Amsterdam Advisory Board, the IP Media Expo Advisory Board and the Producer's Guild New Media Council. He is a magna cum laude graduate of New York University and was Adelbert Alumni Scholar at CWRU and the Cleveland Institute of Music.
Larry Gerbrandt, Principal, Media Valuation Partners: Larry Gerbrandt oversees the firms valuation, strategic consulting, market research and litigation support engagements, advising clients on the economics of media and content. Prior to MVP he was SVP/gen. mgr. of Nielsen Analytics, a division of The Nielsen Company, focusing on emerging media technology economics and advertising models. During as 20-year career at Kagan World Media he launched more than 25 newsletters and databook products, including The Economics of Basic Cable Networks, Cable Network Investor, TV Program Investor, VOD Investor and Streaming Media Investor. His background also includes experience in film and video production (Brimstone Films), commercial photography (The Shootist), cable TV system operations (Orion Cable Systems) and magazine publishing (Cable World). His valuation and expert witness career has spanned more than 60 litigations, including such high profile cases as Katzenberg v. Disney, Bochco v. Fox, Dick Wolf v. Universal and RealNetworks v. MPAA. A regular commentator in the national press on media & entertainment trends he also writes the Letter From America column for Euromedia Magazine and the month Media Math column for The Hollywood Reporter. He is a graduate of Regis University in Denver, CO with a degree in Business Administration.
