Alex Knight, CEO, Edge Labs: Alex Knight has more than 20 years of experience as a pioneer at the intersection of technology and media. He is currently CEO of EDGE Labs, which provides strategic consulting to technology, media, investment and consumer products companies. Knight has helped start and/or served on the boards of a wide range of companies including: Classmates (now United Online), About.com (now NYTimes), DataCastle Corporation, Coffee Equipment Company (now Starbucks), NETbot, Throw (both purchased by Excite/ATT), NewsCloud and Quorus. Most recently, Knight was also a Portfolio Manager at Intellectual Ventures, a privately-held invention investment company with over $5 Billion under management. At IV, he led development of the global software portfolio for the firms Invention Development Fund, working with inventors and researchers around the world to drive long-term innovation. Prior to founding EDGE Labs in 2004, Knight was a Managing Director at ARCH Venture Partners, a seed and early stage venture capital fund manager with nearly $1.5 Billion under management. ARCH invests across the U.S. and specializes in spin-outs of lab and university technology. As EVP of MCI News Corporation Internet Ventures, Knight led the joint ventures business development, product management and editorial activities, including launch of the award-winning iGuide (reviewed by BusinessWeek as "brilliant "). Before joining MCI News, Knight led creative and business affairs for online services and broadband media at Microsoft. His responsibilities included establishing the Microsoft/NBC partnership and managing early work on a variety of businesses, including the launch of MSN, interactive television applications/media and local services, such as Sidewalk/CitySearch. Prior to Microsoft, Knight led business development at Continuum Productions (now Corbis), a private company founded by Bill Gates to pioneer the creation of large digital libraries and media for online distribution. Knight also spent five years at Apple in a variety of roles, including leading developer relations and evangelism for the creation of Apples Personal Interactive Electronics business. Knights speaking engagements have ranged from the Harvard Business School to the Cannes Film Festival. He holds an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a BA from Stanford University.
Darcy Frisch is Vice President of Strategic Investments at Hearst Interactive Media, Since joining Hearst in 2000, her role has been to identifies, execute and oversee the corporations investments in interactive media businesses. Ms. Frisch has made investments in Circles, drugstore.com, XM Satellite Radio, The NewsMarket, MobiTV, and Sphere. Ms. Frisch is a board observer at Voxpop.TV. She also works closely with UGO Entertainment and Kaboodle, the groups wholly-owned companies. Prior to Hearst, Ms. Frisch was with the investment group E2Enet, and before that she was VP of Corporate development at Building One Services, a national building services company. She also held positions as a tax analyst at KPMG and as the legislative assistant for tax for U.S. Senator David Boren of Oklahoma. Ms Frisch graduated from Yale University with a BA in Political Science and earned her MBA at the University of Virginias Darden Graduate School of Business.
Rachel Lam is SVP and Group Managing Director of the Time Warner Investments group. The group targets non-control strategic investments in digital media and technology companies that have a clear fit with Time Warners operating divisions (www.timewarnerinvestments.com). She has been head of the Investments group since 2003. Before returning to Time Warner in 2001, Ms. Lam was a principal at Quetzal/Chase Capital Partners, a venture capital group focused on the communications industry, and before that was VP, U.S. private equity at CSFB Equity Partners, a $2.75 billion private equity fund investing in a broad range of industries. Prior to that, she was director, office of the president at Time Warner Inc., where she worked directly for former Time Warner CEO Dick Parsons on corporate transactions and strategic initiatives. In addition, Ms. Lam spent several years in investment banking, focusing on the media sector at Credit Suisse First Boston and on mergers and acquisitions at Morgan Stanley. Ms. Lam received a B.S. degree in industrial engineering and operations research from U.C. Berkeley and an M.B.A. degree from Harvard Business School.
Chris Fralic joined First Round Capital in 2006, and was most recently VP of Business Development at del.icio.us which was acquired by Yahoo! in December 2005, where he focused on distribution partnerships to integrate del.icio.us across a broad set of browsers, tools and publishing partners. Chris previously spent 6 years at eBay, and his last position was a combination ad sales and business development role helping entertainment companies such as Twentieth Century Fox, Universal Music Group, Apple and Netflix reach and connect with eBay users. Chris previously led the eBay Entertainment categories, managing the transaction, platform and supply/demand aspects of the books, movies and music marketplaces in the US with over $1 billion in transaction volume during his time there. Chris had been the VP of Business Development at Half.com, which eBay acquired in June 2000, where he helped develop many parts of the business including fund raising, content licensing, the affiliate program, supply and distribution partnerships, and advertising and sponsorships sales. Chris has over 25 years of technology industry experience, including significant Internet sales and business development roles since 1996. He was Vice President of Business Development at Nextron, Director of Business Development at America Online, and an Account Manager at Oracle focused on their early Internet offerings for some of its largest accounts such as AOL and Time Warner. Earlier in his career, he held senior sales and management roles in the computer reseller and consulting services industry for companies including The Computer Factory, BusinessLand, and ComputerLand/Vanstar where he was responsible for over $100 million in hardware, services, and consulting sales. He currently serves on the Board of Governors for the Leader to Leader Institute (formerly the Peter F. Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management), and has taught graduate-level classes at Temple, Drexel, Rutgers and Eastern University. He has spoken at numerous industry events including Gartner Groups Retailvision, DigitalHollywoods Media Summit, Jupiters Plug.in, AlwaysOns OnHollywood, MediaKitchens Venture Day and DreamitVentures. Chris is an advisor at First Growth Venture Network, a member of the Philly.com Digital Advisory Board, and has attended and been involved with the TED Conference since 1994 and helped launch TEDTalks which have been viewed over 100 million times. Chris is a co-author of Media and Communication VC Best Practices, and is a co-inventor of a US Patent for listing goods for sale online by phone. He is an avid skier/snowboarder and tennis player, and has finished 4 marathons with his wife and swears he will never run one again. Chris earned his BS in Finance from Villanova University, and his MBA from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia.
Brian Hirsch, Managing Director, Greenhill SAVP: Brian Hirsch is a Managing Partner of Greenhill SAVP and a Co-Chairman of the Funds Investment Committee. Prior to joining SAVP in 2004, Mr. Hirsch was a Principal at Sterling Venture Partners and led the firms investments in technology-related companies. Mr. Hirsch is currently a board member of Flat World Knowledge, FTRANS, HomeSphere, MyNines, Pontiflex, RealDirect, Spanfeller Media Group, Three Stage Media, and TRAFFIQ. Brian previously sat on the board of YellowJacket (acquired by the Intercontinental Exchange, NYSE:ICE) and KnowledgeStorm (acquired by TechTarget, NASDAQ:TTGT). Prior to joining Sterling Venture Partners, Mr. Hirsch was a vice president at ABN AMRO Private Equity (AAPE), the U.S. venture capital group of ABN AMRO N.V., one of the worlds largest banks. Before joining AAPE, Mr. Hirsch worked as a senior consultant at KPMG in the Information, Communications & Entertainment (ICE) practice, where his clients included General Electric, CBS/Westinghouse and the Tribune Company.
Linda Gridley, President and CEO, Gridley & Company LLC: a boutique investment bank that provides financial advisory services to companies in the Information Services industry with a specific focus on advertising and marketing businesses. Ms. Gridley has over 20 years of investment banking experience with more than 15 years specifically covering the advertising and marketing services industries. Ms. Gridley has lead transformative deals across a wide range of sectors including Advertising Agencies, Customer Loyalty & Retail Marketing, Database Marketing, Direct Marketing, Market Research and Consulting, Online Advertising, Systems Integration, and Teleservices. Notably, Ms. Gridley completed more than $1.3 billion in equity offering for Young & Rubicam, advised on the divestitures of two business divisions of Catalina Marketing, and successfully sold leading database marketing companies, Knowledgebase Marketing and M/A/R/C Group. Most recently, Ms. Gridley has focused on the digital transformation occurring in the advertising and marketing services industries, and has completed transactions for industry leaders such as Digitas, DoubleClick, and GSI Commerce. She has also been instrumental in completing transactions for online-focused emerging growth companies as avVenta Worldwide and Bluestreak. Prior to founding Gridley, Ms. Gridley was a Managing Director in the U.S. Media Client Services Group at ABN Amro. Ms. Gridley joined ABN Amro in May, 2001 when the firm acquired the U.S. Investment Banking business of ING Barings, where she was a Managing Director and head of the firm's Information and Internet Services Group. Ms. Gridley joined ING Barings in October, 1997 when the firm acquired Furman Selz LLC where she was a Managing Director covering Information and Internet Services companies. Prior to joining Furman Selz in February 1996, Ms. Gridley spent ten years in the M&A Department and the Technology Group at Lehman Brothers. Ms. Gridley received her MBA degree from the Amos Tuck School and A.B. degree from Dartmouth College.
