Content Rights and Technology Solutions in Media and Entertainment: From Standardization to Implementation of New Technology Strategies
Content is what the entertainment and media industry produce, and the viability of the industry’s future rests on its ability to manage its content and control its distribution while at the same time making it available to an ever larger customer base. And that is the job of the DRM technology industry, to make the film, music and mobile technology delivery systems safe for mass use. In this session, we will explore, from the point of view of the technology companies, the possibilities and potential of DRM in the evolving content landscape. From CDs and DVDs to broadband and wireless delivery, DRM and content protection represents the bottom line of the future of our industries.

Alex Terpstra, Chief Executive Officer, Civolution: Alex Terpstra led the creation of Civolution as a spin out company from Philips in 2008, and with his role to grow the company has executed  two acquisitions for Civolution - Teletrax in 2008 and Thomson STS in 2009. After initially working in the television content production industry, Alex built his professional career further at Philips. From the early 1990s while at Philips, Alex was deeply involved in multiple projects in the digitalization of television broadcasting; first in developing digital compression equipment and since 2001 in the area of content protection. During these years Alex held various managerial positions in project and product management, sales and marketing and business development. In 2003 Alex was appointed General Manager of Philips’ CryptoWorks business, developing and marketing conditional access solutions to the broadcasting industry, until the group was successfully divested in 2006. In January 2007 Alex was appointed CEO of the Philips Technology Incubator venture known as Content Identification with the assignment to accelerate its growth, which led to the spin-out as a standalone of Civolution in October 2008. He is a frequent speaker in his role as an industry thought-leader at key global events.



Steve Tranter, Vice President of Broadband and Interactive, NDS: Steve Tranter is respo
nsible for the design, delivery and support of NDS's interactive products and systems for North and South America. He relocated to NDS's Newport Beach office in California five years ago from the NDS headquarters near London in the UK. Steve has a degree in Physics from the University of Leeds in the UK and has experience in systems design and integration from a variety of industries, including analytical scientific instrumentation, photographic reproduction, database technology and digital broadcasting. Steve has been with NDS for 9 years and has been involved in the design and implementation of some of the world's largest and most advanced digital broadcast systems.













Michael Petricone, Senior Vice president, Government Affairs, CEA: Michael Petricone is the
senior vice president of government affairs for the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). In his position, Michael has been responsible for representing the CE industry's position before Congress and the FCC on critical issues such as digital television broadband, privacy and home recording rights. Mr. Petricone is a frequent speaker on policy issues impacting the consumer electronics industry, and in 2003 Michael was featured by Dealerscope Magazine as one of the technology industry's "Top 40 Under 40". Mr. Petricone received his law degree from Georgetown University Law Center and his undergraduate degree from Tufts University. CEA represents more than 1000 U.S. manufacturers of audio, video, accessories, mobile electronics, communication, information and multimedia products that are sold through consumer channels. CEA also sponsors and manages the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the world's largest annual trade event showcasing consumer electronics products.






Kent E. Sahin, President & CEO, REAL Software Systems, LLC: Kent E. Sahin is the President
& CEO of REAL Software Systems, LLC, which provides software solutions used to automate intellectual property rights management and deal accounting. Its solutions are used across increasingly convergent markets including Entertainment, Publishing, Communications, High Tech, Merchandising, and Life Sciences. Market leaders such as BBC Worldwide, Cox Communications, Electronic Arts, Hasbro, Microsoft, MGM Studios, Netflix, PBS, and more use its enterprise-class solutions to manage deal complexity, uniqueness, and volumes. RSS has operations in Los Angeles, Boston, and London. Prior to REAL Software Systems, Kent was a founding member of Kenan Systems Corporation, a long standing provider of business support software to the telecommunications, financial services, and life sciences industries. In 1999, Lucent Technologies acquired Kenan Systems for $1.4 Billion for its telecommunications billing software products and services. Subsequent to the acquisition, Kent was a primary contributor in the integration of Lucent’s 2,000 software engineering and software marketing professionals. Kent is a native of Boston, Massachusetts and earned a B.S. in Marketing from the School of Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Kent resides in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles with his wife and three children.

Steve Christian, VP of Marketing, Verimatrix: Steve Christian has a wealth of experience in the digital media and Internet technology space and is a frequent speaker on media technology and business trends at global industry events. At Verimatrix, he is responsible for product strategy, marketing programs and management of brand equity. Prior to joining Verimatrix, Christian was VP Marketing at streaming media specialist Nine Systems and also ran his own "virtual VP" technology marketing consultancy, helping the growth of a variety of software, wireless and Internet security ventures. His background includes product and services management at Wind River, ST Microelectronics and Raytheon. Christian has a 1st class degree in Physics from the University of Bristol and an MBA from the Open University in the UK.

Christopher Kenneally,
Director of Business Development, Copyright Clearance Center: At
Copyright Clearance Center, Christopher Kenneally is responsible for organizing and hosting programs that address the business needs of authors and publishers of all backgrounds and sizes. Among other activities, he is host and moderator for an ongoing series of writing conferences called, “Beyond the Book.” The programs have been broadcast nationally on C-SPAN’s Book-TV and in Canada on BookTelevision; the series is also now a podcast, available from iTunes.com. In addition, Kenneally’s articles on such topics as blogging, search engines, and the impact of technology on writers have appeared in the Boston Business Journal, Washington Business Journal, and BookTech Magazine, among other publications.








Mridula Palat, Director, Sales, RightsLogic at RSG Media Systems, LLC: Mridul
a is a subject matter expert in content rights and royalties management. She was instrumental in designing product modules for RightsLogic, RSG Media Systems' proprietary rights management solution, implemented at major media companies including Discovery Communications, Turner Broadcasting, MTV Networks, Major League Baseball and Electronic Arts among others. Mridula works closely with RSG's current and potential clients, understanding their needs in Rights Management and providing guidance on industry best practices. She also designed RightsLogic's Program Sales Analytics module, a state of the art toolkit that provides program sales teams with the rights, CRM and sales analytics tools to grow their business. Prior to working at RSG she worked in the entertainment industry as a producer/director among other roles. Her assignments included; Coca-Cola's marketing campaign for the launch of the product 'Dasani' in New York, the media campaign for the World Leaders Summit at the United Nations Secretariat, extras casting director on the film the Bourne Supremacy, producer on the BBC television show 'Bombay Blush' and producer on several commercial film campaigns in Asia including campaigns for Pepsi Co and Nestle. While at Columbia University she worked at the office of the UN Secretary General and co-authored a UNDP report on expanding access to modern energy services. Mridula has a masters degree in International Media Business Strategy from Columbia University, New York, a masters degree in Film and Communications from Sophia College, Bombay University, Mumbai and an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from St. Josephs' College, Bangalore.

Amena Ali, Chief Marketing Officer, Arxan Technologies, Inc.: Amena Ali joined Arxan as Chief Marketing Officer in January 2007. Arxan secures applications against piracy, tampering and unauthorized access, protecting sensitive code and keys from compromise. The company hardens DRM and digitial media apps across desktop, mobile and embedded devices to maintain the integrity of business models and IP. Ms. Ali has over 16 years management experience in software and telecommunications companies ranging in size from $25 million to $30 billion. She has developed and implemented marketing strategy, execution and corporate communications through an IPO, a secondary offering, 3 acquisitions of private companies, and 4 mergers of public companies. Her prior experience includes senior marketing positions at EMC Corporation, Legato Systems (acquired by EMC in 2003), and OTG Software (acquired by Legato in 2002). Ms. Ali has also held executive-level marketing and finance positions at MCI, and was a consultant with Bain & Company. She earned a bachelor's degree from Wesleyan University and an MBA from Yale University.
