The New Hollywood Equation – Content Owners, New Platforms, Agents & Commerce
As the entertainment industry enters its next, albeit yet to be determined, phase of production and distribution – where digital technologies take a stronger and more significant role – the basic relationship among power players is likely to take new and unique forms. For the sake of discussion, we might call this the New Hollywood Equation, where content owners, talent, talent agents and the new distribution channels all stake out new territory and attempt to find new formula for dealing with the next generation of Hollywood. In this session, we bring together some of the best informed creative executives in the field.

Jerry Kowal is Senior Vice President, Digital Media, at Endemol USA, the largest indepe
ndent television production company in the world. In this role, Jerry is charged with general management and strategic oversight of digital media, and manages all of the company’s digital activities, including strategy, business development, sales and creative development for the company’s digital media content platforms, including VOD, broadband, web-based and mobile platforms, and interactive television technologies. Additionally, he is responsible for creating new business ventures and partnerships in the digital media space, as well as providing additional strategic support for the company’s traditional television businesses. Prior to Endemol, Jerry helped run business development for the digital arm of CBS Television Distribution, where he oversaw and managed relationships with over 200 local station affiliates and was tasked with developing new digital revenue streams for CBS’ full roster of syndicated programming, including Entertainment Tonight and The Insider. Prior to CBS, Jerry co-founded and ran a successful social media startup. He also spent over 4 years as a corporate attorney at Ropes & Gray in Boston, where he focused primarily on technology company mergers & acquisitions and private equity financings, in which he represented a variety of startup companies and leading investment banks and private equity firms. He holds an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, and JD and BBA (summa cum laude) degrees from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. He resides with his wife and son in Los Angeles.

Kevin Yen, Director of Strategic Partnerships, YouTube: As Director of Strategic Partnersh
ips for YouTube, Kevin Yen leads the company's New Media business, responsible for the development and success of deals with the industry's premier creators of original content, including established producers, next generation studios and online celebrities.  He is at the cutting edge of the digital video revolution -- innovating with the industry new content production models, monetization methods, and marketing strategies.  His expertise includes deal structuring, branded entertainment, and social media. Kevin has negotiated partnership deals that have generated well in excess of a billion dollars for Google, YouTube, and partners. Prior to Google’s acquisition of YouTube in October, 2006, Kevin managed the partnerships team for Google Video's ad supported and paid download service.  He also forged large-scale search and contextual advertising deals with Google's major portal partners. Before joining Google, Kevin held Senior Product Manager positions at Netscape and AOL.  His work included helping transform the Netscape Navigator browser into the foundation of today's open source Mozilla Firefox.  In addition, Kevin negotiated distribution partnerships with Sun Microsystems and Macromedia, and innovated advanced ad targeting methods.  He pioneered marketing optimization systems at a startup, and programmed quantitative forecasting models for Apple, Hewlett Packard, and others. The Hollywood Reporter recognized Kevin as a Top 50 Digital Power executive in 2009 and 2010.  The Producers Guild of America nominated him as a top leader in emerging entertainment in 2010. He is a member of the IAWT. He earned his BA in Applied Mathematics from UC Berkeley, MS in Engineering from Stanford, and MBA from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley.

Greg Kampanis is Senior Vice President, Content Strategy and Operations for South Par
k Digital Studios, a joint venture between Matt Stone & Trey Parker, the creators of the Emmy award winning television show South Park, and MTV Networks. In his role Greg oversees the business development, operations and strategy for South Park’s global digital media business, including websites in eight countries, video gaming, digital applications and goods, as well as new adult animation projects. SouthParkStudios.com has become one of the leading television show websites worldwide with more than 50MM videos views a month and user visits averaging nearly 40 minutes. Greg joined South Park in 2009 after playing an instrumental role in the establishment and launch of the South Park Digital Studios joint venture while working as Vice President, Strategy & Business Development for the MTV Networks Entertainment Group. In his role, Greg led strategy and new business development efforts for the Entertainment Group’s cable television networks (Comedy Central, Spike & TV Land) and the group’s digital properties (Atom and Gametrailers). His responsibilities included mergers & acquisitions, long range term planning and strategy, digital strategy formulation, identifying and developing new revenue opportunities and building relationships with key strategic partners in technology, digital and traditional media. In addition, Greg was responsible for the day-to-day management of the Entertainment Group’s download-to-own and syndication businesses. Prior to MTV Networks, Greg spent more than four years at Comcast’s E! Entertainment Television and Style Network as Manager and then Director of Business Development. Greg was responsible for the development and execution of strategies to extend the network’s brands and drive new revenue growth through strategic alliances, partnerships, acquisitions and new ventures. He was particularly focused on E!’s off-channel businesses including wireless, digital media, home video, radio, syndication and licensing. Before entering the cable industry, Greg spent 3 years with internet consultancy, Proxicom, and before that was a management consultant. Greg holds a B.S. from Georgetown University and an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management.

Douglas De Luca, Co-Executive Producer, "Jimmy Kimmel Live'': Douglas De Luca is a
seasoned producer with an extremely diverse background that encompasses over eighteen years of experience producing: feature films, TV series and specials, commercials, music videos, theater, and a wide variety of live events around the world. Currently, Mr. De Luca is co-executive producer for ABC's high profile, late-night vehicle, ``Jimmy Kimmel Live'' (now in its eighth season). Since September 2002, Douglas has worked behind the scenes to develop a diverse and broad base of strategic relationships, which have successfully helped generate revenue while providing previously untapped resources and events to the show. Just prior to Kimmel's current late-night vehicle, (1998-2002) Mr. De Luca co-executive produced the first four seasons of Comedy Central's original sketch comedy series, ``The Man Show,'' which starred Kimmel and Adam Corolla. In 2000, De Luca helped launch ABC's groundbreaking, hit, reality show, ``The Mole.'' Concurrently in 2006 - 2008, Douglas created a sports and entertainment company called ProElite that focused on the fast-growing sport of Mixed Martial Arts. Mr. De Luca served as CEO of this public company and during his tenure negotiated and closed deals with Showtime Networks, CBS Television, Mark Burnett Productions, IMG, Fox Sports Net among a variety of other partners all over the globe. During this time, he took the company from an idea to the only Mixed Martial Arts organization to be broadcast live on network television in primetime. His television credits include four years of producing NBC's top-rated annual special, ``The World's Greatest Magic,'' ``The Walt Disney World Christmas Parade,'' the ``Universoul Circus,'' (1998), for HBO, based on the only African-American owned and operated circus in the world. From 1998 to 2002, while maintaining his executive producing responsibilities, Mr. De Luca also produced the ``Circus'' road tour in over 40 cities around the country. Douglas' credits producing music performances include Disney's weekly series, ``Two Hour Tour,'' with acts such as Christina Aguilera, Enrique Iglesias, and 98 Degrees. The well-rounded Mr. De Luca's credits also include numerous documentaries for A&E, The Discovery Channel, and the History Channel. In 1998, Mr. De Luca successfully created a world class sports franchise out of the loosely organized sport of ``Freestyle Motocross'' when he innovatively formed a touring group of specialist to perform at arena sized venues around the country. Mr. De Luca is the Founder and Chairman of the non-profit San Gennaro Foundation through which his passion for good works and his Italian heritage have helped him shape an extremely successful charity event, quickly becoming a favored attraction for Los Angeles in just four years: The Feast of San Gennaro-L.A.

Oren Katzeff, Vice President and General Manager, Demand Media Entertainment: whe
re he runs the day-to-day operations of Cracked.com and Mania.com. His responsibilities include overseeing the creation of high quality, intelligent text and video content, and identifying, evaluating and structuring content monetization and distribution opportunities. Prior to joining Demand Media, Oren was Senior Director of Business Development for the Yahoo Media Group, where his primary focus was negotiating all business deals for Yahoo News and Yahoo Finance. Within this role, Oren negotiated and managed over fifty key partnerships, including those with The Associated Press, Reuters, ABCNews, FOX, USAToday, The Weather Channel, CNN, Gawker, Huffington Post, and many others. Prior to joining Yahoo, Oren practiced law at a small firm in San Mateo, California, gaining experience in both the litigation and business transactions side of the profession. Although he no longer practices law, it still makes him smile when his grandmother proudly tells her friends that her "grandson is a lawyer". Oren holds an undergraduate business degree from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley, and a JD from Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco. He has written over ten short screenplays, seven of which were filmed and submitted in film competitions (a few of them were award winning), and sometimes feels the itch to give stand-up comedy one last try.

Mark J. Kapczynski, Chief Operating Officer, Kontrol Media: Mark Kapczynski has a s
uccessful track record as a serial entrepreneur, chief executive and media industry expert. His current venture, Kontrol Media Corp., is an idea incubator for startups and senior professionals in the media and technology markets including Web 2.0, mobile, and television. Prior to that, he was founder and CEO of MESoft, a media and entertainment software company, for which Kapczynski raised two rounds of seed and venture capital funding exceeding $8MM. Under his leadership, the company also grew its distribution to a global level and partnered with leading IT companies, such as IBM, Sun and AMD, and media companies that include Avid, Ascent Media and Sony. Additionally, he received a patent for a digital media workflow process. From 1995 to 2002, Kapczynski worked at Microsoft Corporation as their Director of Worldwide Media & Entertainment Solutions Group. During that time, he worked with numerous digital media and internet start-ups such as Homestore (now Move.com), Movielink, and MeTV. Mark Kapczynski got his first taste at being an entrepreneur in 1993 when he founded Digital Genesis-a pioneer in the internet/e-commerce space-which was sold to publicly-traded Netgateway, Inc. (NGWY, now IIG) three years later. Mr. Kapczynski graduated from UCLA film school and continues to be active in multiple industry associations that span media, mobile telecom, technology, and Internet Web 2.0. In his free time, Mr. Kapczynski enjoys car racing and playing the drums.
