And 75 years after its start, at its heart, the television industry remains true to its word but how things have changed. Video is now more than television. Video is at the heart of how consumers experience their daily lives. Video represents all-access all the time programming from a world of entertainment and information providers. Video is broadband and that represents video access to hundreds of millions of video websites. Video is mobile, video is how consumers share their home movies and personal photography with friends. Television has created a video infrastructure across platforms, from high definition to mobile that learns and responds as the needs of the consumer communications lifestyle emerges. John Watson, Executive Director of Business Development, AT&T Digital Media Solutions: In this role he is responsible for identifying and developing go-to market propositions that integrate partner and AT&T products, solutions and services that provide ongoing business value for customers. Prior to joining AT&T Mr Watson was Vice-President of Business Development in the Content Markets group at Level 3 and was responsible for building relationships and positioning Level 3s content markets services within major Media organizations. Mr Watson did two stints at IMG, the worlds largest sports, media and lifestyle marketing company and most recently was responsible for the international sales and marketing of IMG Medias Internet and Broadband platform products. With over 10 years experience in the Online industry, John is tasked with using leading edge new media to enhance the online offerings of new and existing clients including ManUtd, Arsenal and The European Tour. Prior to rejoining IMG Media, John was the Executive Vice President responsible for sales and marketing at Nine Systems, a San Diego based streaming services company where he built a team that more than doubled revenue in 12 months helping attract clients including Warner Music, the NBA and the NHL. In his earlier stint at IMG Media, John served as a Vice-President of Business Development leading various strategic initiatives with organisations such as HP and MCI, to whom he oversaw the divestment of the Interactive Content Factory software business. He joined IMG Media initially as VicePresident of Hosting Operations and built the hosting group to service the web hosting, broadband, WAP, SMS, and MMS requirements of its roster of over 50 high-profile clients on four continents including the European PGA tour, Manchester United, O2, the Open Championship, Tiger Woods, and Wimbledon. John has also held various business development and product management roles at PSINet where he was instrumental in launching the managed web hosting business while building revenue and enhancing partnerships. John holds a BA from the University of Kent at Canterbury and an MBA from the College of William and Mary where he graduated first in his class.
Roger Keating, Senior Vice President, Digital Media, Hearst Television Inc.: Roger Keating runs the digital media effort for Hearst Television, the broadcasting division of Hearst Corporation. Hearst Television owns and operates 29 TV stations across the US, mostly ABC and NBC affiliates, in markets such as Boston, Sacramento, Baltimore and Orlando. His scope includes Hearst Televisions station web sites, mobile television and interactive TV. He came to Hearst Television with a broad background in various sectors of the media industry. Mr. Keating has run large cable TV operations at Comcast and more recently at Time Warner, where he presided over the integration of the Adelphia acquisition in the Los Angeles Region. He ran the voice services business at AOL, and also ran the AOL Health and AOL Travel verticals. He led the formation of Comcasts Internet division in the mid 90s and oversaw the development of their high speed data business. And he was founder/CEO of a dot com in 1998 named Zatso that worked with local TV broadcasters to offer streaming video-based personalized newscasts.
Michael Alexander, Strategy & Growth Initiatives, IBM Global Telecommunications Industry: Michael Alexander has more than 30 years of systems development experience in all aspects of the information technology business. Currently, Alexander is global solutions architect for SPST (service provider strategic transformation) in IBMs global telecom solutions. He consults with clients globally as an NGN telco subject matter expert (SME) and as a technical leader in VoIP solutions. In addition, Alexander is responsible for the development of telco technical NGN and specifically for VoIP solutions developed by IBM for U.S. clients AT&T, BellSouth, Qwest, SBC & Verizon. He was previously the IT architect profession executive and enterprise architecture practice lead for business innovation services, Australia/New Zealand. Before joining IBM, Alexander was technical partner & chief architect in the solutions integration practice at AT&T Solutions. He was responsible for the development of solution architectures that ensured successful engagements with all clients. Previously, Alexander worked at Unisys for 22 years and was the chief architect for Unisys global systems integration practice. He has previously spoken on digital media topics at TM Forum Americas and TM Forum Nice.
Braxton Jarratt, CEO, Clearleap: Braxton has driven innovation and growth in senior management roles with technology and media companies, most recently as Senior Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at Tandberg Television (an Ericsson Company) where he led the rapid expansion of the company into the North American television market and video on demand (VOD) software business. There he launched and secured key customers for Tandberg's pioneering television distribution, management and advertising products, contributing to the acquisition of Tandberg by Ericsson for $1.2 billion in 2007. Braxton joined Tandberg through their $120 million acquisition of venture-backed startup N2 Broadband, where he drove key deployments of the company's on-demand software in nearly every VOD site in North America. Previously, Braxton worked at Cox as director of product strategy for the cable division and GM in the interactive media division, where he launched the first broadband internet content service in partnership with @Home. Braxton's first tech startup experience was as the head of commercial services with Primenet, an internet startup purchased by GlobalCenter. Braxton received his Bachelor's degree in engineering from Dartmouth College.
Josette Bonte, Chief Digital Media Strategist, Cisco IBSG: Bonte is a digital media and filmed entertainment expert. She spent the first 11 years of her career as film and television industry executive in Hollywood and the past 14 years in the fields of telecom, interactive television, broadband content and online games. Josette joins Cisco from Cookie Jar Entertainment, the producers of the acclaimed Kids TV series: Arthur, Caillou, Zaboomafoo, The Doodlebops, etc., where she was the VP of Digital Media. As such, her responsibilities included negotiating distribution agreements with all the new media platforms (telco VOD, IPTV, broadband and mobile) in the domestic and international markets. She previously served as Ovums Vice President of Content and IPTV, working on IPTV deployment strategies with service provider clients like AT&T, France Telecom and BT. Besides her consulting experience while at Ovum and earlier at RHK, Josette has also worked as Chief Content Advisor to the PanAmSat Net 36 Team; where she concentrated on broadband content strategy and customer acquisition. Bonte is also a telco TV pioneer: In 1994, she joined then US West (now Qwest) as Head of Strategic Marketing, Entertainment and Interactive Services, where she participated in the companys early interactive media and VoD trials and soon became the companys Liason with the Hollywood entertainment industry for content strategy. In the eighties, Josette served as Executive Director of Unifrance Film, where she represented the French motion picture and television industries in Hollywood. She subsequently founded EuroScreen Partners, a film production and distribution company capitalized by European cable operators and banks. Josette received an M.F.A from the UCLA School of Film and Television in 1981 and a Ph.D. in Telecommunications and New Media from the Sorbonne in 1996. She is also the author of a best-selling book published by French publisher PUF in 1995 entitled La Television a la Carte aux Etats-Unis.
Doug Craig, Senior Vice President, Digital and Home Entertainment, Discovery Communications: As senior vice president, Digital and Home Entertainment for Discoverys Digital Media division, Doug Craig oversees video production for the companys portfolio of digital platforms as well as manages key digital syndication businesses. On the distribution front, Craig is responsible for Discoverys Home Entertainment business, which provides full-length programming on-demand through partnerships with cable operators, directly to consumers through download-to-own services and via DVD sales. In addition, he oversees the programming of Discoverys mobile platform as well as the companys broadband syndication offerings. On the production side, Craig has created an innovative development model consisting of both originally produced content and content drawn from Discoverys portfolio of networks. Craig works across the companys business units to develop digital programming and promotional packages that extend the linear viewing experience to increase engagement and reach new audiences for the network brands. Under his direction, the company produced nearly 10,000 short-form clips in 2008 for distribution across various platforms including its brand websites and HowStuffWorks.com; its video-on-demand and mobile services; and through online syndication partnerships with various video-sharing destinations. Craig was promoted from his role as vice president in August 2007, where he played a strategic executive role in the growth of two of Discoverys leading digital services; Discovery Mobile, the companys 24/7 dedicated mobile programming network launched in 2006; and Discovery on Demand, which has seen exponential growth since re-launching the same year with improved navigation, greater depth of content, and more premiere and next day scheduling. Both services enjoy nearly universal distribution among leading mobile and affiliate providers. Having joined Discovery in 1997, shortly after the launch of Animal Planet, he began as manager of programming research for the fledging network. Shortly thereafter, he transitioned into the Animal Planet programming department, reaching the level of vice president of programming and scheduling. Prior to joining Animal Planet, Craig served as manager of research at MTV Networks in Los Angeles and as a client service executive at Nielsen Media Research in New York. Craig holds a bachelors degree from Bryant College and a masters degree from the City University of New York. He is based at Discovery Communications global headquarters in Silver Spring, Md.
Adam Powers, Chair of Ecosystem Committee DLNA and Director of Standards and Emerging Technology, Rovi Corporation: Adam Powers serves as the chairman of the Ecosystem Committee of the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA). In this position, Powers leads the efforts of the members of the digital living ecosystem in support of the DLNAs charter of enabling content sharing between any variety of consumer devices and customer premises equipment. Powers is also director of standards and emerging technology at Rovi Corporation. In this role, he is responsible for standards and technology initiatives across Rovi Corporations product lines, including on-screen guides, metadata, Internet content and content sharing. Powers joined Rovi Corporation in January 2007 after Rovi Corporation acquired Mediabolic, where he had served as principal engineer and architect for the Connected Platform. Prior to this, Powers was co-founder and CTO of the IPTV home networking company, Coaxsys. Powers is a member of the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers, and participates in standards activities at CableLabs and the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). He attended California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo for Computer Engineering.
Harshul Sanghi, Managing Director, Motorola Ventures: Harshul Sanghi manages the Silicon Valley office of Motorola Ventures, based in Sunnyvale, California. Harshuls role includes identifying, executing, and managing strategic investments in startup companies that will drive the realization of Motorolas vision of Seamless Mobility. He is also responsible for managing the Venture groups investment activities in India. Prior to Motorola, Harshul was at Ucentric Systems, a leading provider of Whole Home Media solutions, where he was responsible for worldwide sales and market development of the consumer electronics sector. Harshul has extensive experience in the digital media, consumer electronics, and semiconductor industries. In his previous role, Harshul served as General Manager of the satellite and terrestrial business team of Philips Electronics North America Set-Top Box Division. Harshuls early career was spent in various technical and sales management positions in Silicon Valley, Singapore, and Western Europe. Harshul holds an MBA from the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne, Switzerland, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Oregon. He also holds a Bachelors degree in Accountancy and Financial Management from the University of Bombay, India. Harshul is an active member of TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs) Organization and a board member of the Strategic Venture Association in Silicon Valley. He is an observer on the Boards of Avvenu, Mobile Complete, and Ruckus Wireless. Harshul, himself an entrepreneur, enjoys working with entrepreneurs to drive the adoption of disruptive market technologies.
