Bridging TV and Broadband: Strategic Relationships - Advertising, Technology & Content
2009 is the Year of Broadband and Television. Most major television networks have launched ad-supported or subscription-based online video initiatives. They're competing and partnering with aggressive online brands like Yahoo, AOL, Google, and thousands of smaller players all seeking the holy grail. Broadband penetration has surpassed 50% of US homes, technology has improved the product, and demand for online video advertising now outstrips supply. What's happening in 2009, and what are the implications for 2010 and beyond? Traditional media is definitely responding to the challenge of broadband, but success is elusive and the future is never without danger. Don't miss this lively and frank discussion about the present and future of the industry's hottest topic!

Jen Robertson, Vice President, Digital & Emerging Media, WE tv: As vice president of digital and emerging media, Jen Robertson leads the overall digital strategy for WE tv, the premier source for women looking to satisfy their curiosity with fascinating, original stories and entertaining, informative content that is relevant to key stages of their lives. In this role, Ms. Robertson directs the development and acquisition of multi-platform content, alternative distribution/syndication, scheduling and marketing for all digital platforms. She oversees WEtv.com, WE tv On Demand, as well as broadband video and mobile content development and distribution. In 2008, Ms. Robertson spearheaded a complete rebuild of the WEtv.com consumer website. Central to the site’s rebuild was a strategy shift - moving from a promotional site to a content rich destination site, built around a focused group of life stages-specific “channels,” including WE are Single, WE go Bridal, WE are Expecting and WE are Moms, resulting in significant traffic increase year over year. A significantly increased focus on video programming, including the development of exclusive content for every network original series and four new webisode series, resulted in a 130% year over year average monthly increase of video streams on the site. Ms. Robertson also initiated and launched WEgobridal.com in 2007, the online extension of WE tv dedicated to all things bridal and the pre-cursor to WEtv.com’s WE go Bridal channel, resulting in the highest trafficked month in WEtv.com history at the time. Ms. Robertson also continues to focus on emerging platforms, including launching a WE tv mobile video channel that is now available on Sprint, Verizon and the Apple iPhone. Prior to this role, Ms. Robertson served as vice president of consumer marketing for WE tv where she directed the strategy for consumer communications to heighten the image and awareness of the WE tv brand, developed campaigns to support original programming, created partnerships and brand extension opportunities and led the new media strategy and development. Original programming campaigns included the launch campaign for John Edward Cross Country and WE tv’s hit series Bridezillas. She also spearheaded WE.tv, which realized tremendous increases in traffic and aggressively expanded its content. Ms. Robertson was the lead architect of the WE Insider, an online panel now consisting of more than 5,000 women that allows WE tv to gain insight into consumer behaviors and trends, and creates a forum for women to communicate their thoughts on programming and marketing. In 2006, she directed the launch of WE tv Mobile, the first women's mobile network, on Amp'd Mobile. In 2005, she spearheaded the development of the network’s award-winning Minutes of Empowerment campaign, the on-air component of WE tv’s public affairs initiative, WE Empowers Women. Ms. Robertson earned both Gold and Silver Promax awards for consumer campaign creative. Ms. Robertson joined WE tv, owned and managed by Rainbow Media Holdings LLC, in 2000 as manager of marketing for then WE: Women’s Entertainment. She was then promoted to director of marketing in 2003, leading the team responsible for increasing brand awareness for WE tv and helping the network reach record ratings by 2005. Prior to WE tv, Ms. Robertson worked for CoActive Marketing where she was responsible for designing and executing marketing campaigns for clients including Colgate-Palmolive and General Mills. Earlier in her career, she worked for Newsday, where she was responsible for the development of marketing partnerships designed to grow brand awareness, advertising revenue and circulation, and at Sony Music Video, where she developed marketing campaigns for Sony Wonder Home Video, MTV Home Video and Sesame Home Video. Ms. Robertson is a member of the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing (CTAM) and Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT), and is a WICT Betsy Magness Leadership Institute alumna.
