Track III: Media Platforms: Mobile, TV, PC, DVD, Games, Broadband - Device, Personalization & Lifestyle The consumer lives in three digital environments, the home, work and mobile experiencing what we might call the always connected, digital lifestyle. In this session, we will address how the technology, the content providers and developers have adapted themselves to the evolving needs of the digital lifestyle, serving a home-based media, a worked based media and mobile media. Whether its a wirelessly connected home with set-tops, PCs, HDTVs and phone devices; a broadband mobile device, a fully loaded media friendly car, a broadband workspace or public space, the consumer is connected all the time, sending or receiving information and content. In this session, we will explore what it means to create and enable that fully connected universe. Derek Kuhn, Senior Director of Marketing and Business Development, Strategic Solutions, Alcatel-Lucent: Derek Kuhn is the Sr. Director of Marketing and Business Development for Alcatel-Lucents Strategic Solutions Development Group and is based in Canada at Alcatels Ottawa, Ontario Campus. As a business and marketing lead, Mr. Kuhn is Alcatels primary liaison with the content community including film, television and gaming. Mr. Kuhn is also a past Chairman of the Broadband Services Forum (BSF), an independent, non-profit trade association that addresses the business of broadband and works with the service provider and content community to deliver content-rich consumer and business services. Prior to helping found the BSF, Mr. Kuhn served as Chairman of the Broadband Content Delivery Forum (BCDF), which under his stewardship merged with another prominent industry association, the Service Creation Community (SCC), to form the BSF in January 2005. Mr. Kuhn has held senior positions in Marketing, Business Development and Product Management for both wireless and wireline multimedia delivery solutions at Alcatel. Prior to Alcatels acquisition of Newbridge Networks in May 2000, Mr. Kuhn was Senior Product Manager, ATM Access Products in 1999, and Product Manager, Narrowband Packet in1998. Mr. Kuhn joined Newbridge Networks when they acquired Castleton Network Systems of Burnaby, British Columbia where he was a Systems Engineering Manager. Mr. Kuhn began his career as a consulting engineer with Totten Sims & Hubicki from 1988 to 1996. Mr. Kuhn holds a Bachelor of Engineering from Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario.
Scott Smyers, Senior Vice President, Network & Systems Architecture Division, Sony Electronics Inc.: Scott Smyers joined Sony Electronics in 1994, and is now Senior Vice President of the Network and Systems Architecture Division of Sony Electronics Inc.: More than 20 years ago, he made the jump from academic research to industry, where he has since been very active in the areas of standardization, technology research and product development. Scotts particular area of focus is system architecture, system I/O and IP networking. In the 1990's, he performed pioneering work in the area of IEEE 1394 and standards related to digital transmission and device control protocols. During this period, he founded and chaired the Digital Transmission Discussion Group which resulted in the so-called "5C" a.k.a "DTCP" link protection technology. Scott has served as CTO and member of the Board of Directors of the 1394 Trade Association, and on the UPnP Steering Committee. Scott now serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) and President of the DLNA Corporation. He is also Co-Chairman of the Management Committee of the Marlin Developer Community (MDC), Director of the Coral Consortium and member of the Management Committee of the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE). Scott was instrumental in bringing the necessary parties to the table and in forming each of these industry groups. The output of the DLNA to date includes multiple Design Guidelines which leverage UPnP and a variety of IP standards to realize interoperability and content mobility among home networked and mobile devices. Coral, Marlin and DECE look to complete the overall framework that will enable consumers to seamlessly interact with digital commercial content on personal CE devices and PCs. Scott holds a BA in Physics and Philosophy from Cornell University, class of 1981.
Tom L Engdahl is, Senior Vice President & General Manager of the Comcast Media Centers (CMC) Radiance Division. Based in Santa Clara, Radiance is a leading provider of asset delivery systems for moving and managing large digital assets. Its patented technologies for scheduling and executing data transfers, and for controlling data transfer rates, are currently supporting the asset management and delivery requirements for Fortune 500 companies in the aerospace, automotive and advertising industries, among others. Prior to the CMCs asset purchase of Radiance in 2008, Engdahl had served as the companys President and CEO since joining its leadership team in October, 2005. With 30 years of entrepreneurship, engineering, marketing, and management experience, Engdahl has founded and lead six other successful start-up companies: Applied Digital Access (ADAX), Pathfire, Inc., Kasenna Inc., Alloptic Inc., Avasta Inc., and Alopa Networks Inc. In addition, Engdahl has held key positions at companies such as M/A-Com, Northern Telecom, DSC Communications, and Pacific Bell. He holds nine patents for telecommunications and video-cable products and has been active in setting standards in the telecom industry since 1984
Stuart McKechnie, Director of Strategic Marketing at Zoran Corporation since 2004,has more than twenty-five years experience in high-tech electronics. He has directed projects that range from strategic planning through product specification, management, development and marketing to sales and customer support. His experience includes time with technology startups as well as more than fifteen years with the global giant Philips Electronics, serving at both Philips Semiconductors and Philips Consumer Electronics. His focus has been on high-volume products and services developed from leading edge consumer electronics technology, with a special emphasis on digital imaging. Stuart holds a B.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Southampton in the UK, where he specialized in analyzing space imagery.
Adam Powers is director of standards and emerging technology where he is responsible for standards and technology initiatives across Macrovisions product lines, including on-screen guides, metadata, Internet content and content sharing. Adam joined Macrovision in January 2007 after Macrovision acquired Mediabolic, where he had served as principal engineer and architect for the Connected Platform. Prior to this, Adam was co-founder and CTO of the IPTV home networking company, Coaxsys. Adam also serves as Chair of the Ecosystem Committee of the DLNA, where he leads the efforts of the members of the digital living ecosystem in support of the DLNAs charter of enabling content sharing between any variety of consumer devices and customer premises equipment. He is also a member of the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers, and participates in standards activities at CableLabs and the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). Adam attended California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo for Computer Engineering.
Derrick Oien is a seasoned operations executive with an extensive background in entertainment, media and technology. As co-founder and president of Intercasting Corporation, Derrick oversees the companys overall strategic direction, managing product development and negotiating strategic partnerships. Prior to co-founding Intercasting Corporation in March 2004, Oien was President of Vivendi Universal Net USA, a subsidiary of Vivendi Universal that operated MP3.com, Rollingstone.com, eMusic, and Trusonic from December 2001 until April 2003. Previously, he held a variety of positions with companies such as Universal Music Group, Computer Sciences Corporation, BDO Seidman, and Sony Pictures Studios in primarily operations or technology roles.
Mary Francia, CEO & Managing Director, SeroWires: Mary Francia is Managing Director at Serowires, a Consulting firm for Technology Marketing supporting clients with strategy and market foresight as she creates an environment for success in the development and go to market of IP based products. Ms Francia has held key Executive roles in Consumer Healthcare, Wireless Equipment, Cable Television and Consumer Electronics. During her last assignment at Royal Philips Electronics, she managed telecom strategic partnerships and with her direction, Philips brought devices to market with Telecom Operators such as Residential Gateways, Audio and Video Telephony, Digital media Adapters, and IPTV along with tele-healthcare initiatives. Ms. Francia is fluent in several languages and has an MBA in International Business."
