Social Apps and Mini-Apps as the Next Platform: Advertising and Commerce in Mobile, Social Media & Broadband Now there is a new world of mobile and broadband interaction, familiar to almost everyone Mini-Apps, Social Apps and Widgets. For the uninitiated, the Mini-App is miniature application or website that resides as a component element on a users desktop, social media page or mobile device. A button on a user desktop may open multiple Apps, so that in a flash, mini-apps open to reveal up-to-the minute stocks, the weather, airline arrivals, a dictionary, your photo album virtually anything, any data type - can be formatted into a Mini-App. Once the user gets the hang of it, life without mini-apps is impossible. Mini-apps are as addictive as email. Mini-Apps are your mini-obsessions managed and delivered as desired. Add in a layer of commerce and you have a fully featured digital ecosystem. Watch out! Larry Vincent, Group Director, Strategy, Siegel+Gale : Larry Vincent leads the strategy practice at the Los Angeles office of Siegel+Gale. His clients have included CBS, Four Seasons, Freescale Semiconductor, MasterCard, McAfee, Microsoft, the National Football League, Qualcomm, Sony Playstation, and The Home Depot. He has an extensive background working on projects in media, technology, and entertainment. Prior to his work at Siegel+Gale, Larry led strategy teams at several agencies, including Octagon Worldwide, where he also managed the Los Angeles office. Prior to that, he led the strategy team at Cabana Group, a boutique strategy agency specializing in brand strategy for arts and entertainment companies. Before transitioning to the agency side, Larry worked for five years in the corporate strategic planning group of The Walt Disney Company. There, he led projects that leveraged Disneys brand equity and integrated marketing power to launch initiatives with corporate partners such as AT&T, American Express, Coca-Cola, and Kodak. He also worked on global brand building initiatives linked to new technologies that spanned multiple Disney divisions. Larry is an active writer. His book, Legendary Brands: Unleashing the Power of Storytelling to Create a Winning Market Strategy, was released by Dearborn Trade Publishing in 2002. The book explores the narrative structure of consumer brands, the role of myth and the collective unconscious to influence brand touchpoints, and the ways in which consumers develop relationships with brands over time through the devices of storytelling. He is currently at work on a new marketing title, The Simplicity Principle, due out in 2010. He also released a collection of poetry in early 2007. Larry began his career in the performing arts, serving as a manager and strategist for the Southern California Theatre Association, led by legendary impresario, James A. Doolittle. At SCTA, Larry organized and managed engagements with American Ballet Theatre, The Joffrey Ballet, The Royal Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, and the White Oak Dance Project. He holds an MBA from the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. He received his Bachelors degree from USC, where he attended the School of Cinema-Television.
Manish Jha, President and CEO, envIO: Manish Jha, a wireless industry veteran with eighteen years experience in general management, strategy and operations relating to new media, joined envIO in November 2008 as President and CEO. He was previously the CEO of Vantrix Corp., a technology company focusing on multimedia content. Prior to Vantrix, he spent over 16 years at ESPN, most recently serving as Senior Vice President and General Manager of ESPN Mobile. Manish is widely recognized in the industry, including being named as one of the "50 most influential people in streaming and technology" by Streaming Magazine in 2002, recognized by CableFax magazine's as a "CableFax 100" in 2005, named in The Hollywood Reporter's "Who's Who in Mobile" in 2006, and recognized by The Sports Business Journal as one of the influential sports technology executives of the decade in 2008.
Jared Fliesler is Director of Business Development at Slide Inc., where he is responsible for managing media partnerships, leading strategic initiatives and creating first-to-market advertising deals. He works with some of the worlds most recognized brands (Starbucks, Frito-Lay, Estee Lauder) and premium content partners (HBO, E! Entertainment, Hulu), helping them reach and engage with consumers across Slides network of more than 150 million users worldwide. Prior to joining Slide, Jared managed business development for Entrust Administration, an investment firm. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of San Francisco.
Tom Kenney, Co-founder and President, Verve Wireless: Tom has been helping to shape the wireless industry since 1994. Tom began his career in wireless as an early employee at start-up mobile carrier GO! Communications, a spin-out from MCI. Prior to Verve, he was a venture capitalist with Blue Run Ventures, formerly Nokia Venture Partners, for over six years. While at BRV, Tom was a contributing principal on many investments, including PayPal (sold to eBay), eVoice (sold to AOL), MongoMusic (sold to Microsoft), and Lightningcast (sold to AOL). Prior to Blue Run Ventures, Tom spent several years working in Nokia Corporation's Mergers and Acquisition Group.
Shaukat Shamim, our Senior Vice President, Rhythm New Media: Shaukat Shamim is the SVP, Americas and Asia for Rhythm NewMedia. Prior to Rhythm, Shaukat was Chief Technology Officer at Neocarta Ventures, a $300 million early stage investment firm. Prior to NeoCarta, Shaukat pioneered the development of Yahoo! Messenger, which currently delivers over 10 billion messages a day. Shaukat was responsible for the architecture, product vision and long-term product roadmap for Yahoo! Messenger and played key roles in the industry wide coordination over instant messaging standards. Shaukat has also held senior technical and management roles at Symantec. Shaukat received his Bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin.
Ben Pashman, Vice President, Sales & Business Development, Gigya: Ben has 15 years of media marketing experience, including 10 years focused on Internet advertising sales and business development. Positions include Sales and Product Management roles at Doubleclick, Advertising Director at Condenet and Director of Advertising Sales at Travelzoo where Ben helped the company go from $15M to $70M in advertising revenue in three years and saw the company through a successful IPO on NASDAQ.
Sun Jen Yung, Managing Director, Nightwood Capital, based in New York, NY. prior to Nightwood Capital, Sun joined Oppenheimer in September 2006 to head the Digital Media and Internet investment banking practice. Sun's experience of over fourteen years in investment banking includes corporate finance coverage of Media (cable and entertainment), Digital Media, Internet and software companies at TD Securities, Deutsche Bank and Lehman Brothers as well as equity research at Lehman Brothers. Over the years Sun has represented a wide range of clients in these sectors encompassing a variety of equity, debt and merger & acquisition transactions including Adelphia Communications, Autobytel, Comcast Corporation, Digital Domain, iVillage, Liquid Audio, Mediaplex, Scientific-Atlanta and TiVo. She also spent two years at TCSI in Berkeley, CA in Business Development and Finance. Sun graduated from Columbia Business School in 1988 with an MBA in Finance and a B.A. in Economics and International Studies from Macalester College in St. Paul, MN in 1984.
