The New Hollywood Equation – Content Owners, New Platforms, Agents & Commerce
As the entertainment industry enters its next, albeit yet to be determined, phase of production and distribution – where digital technologies take a stronger and more significant role – the basic relationship among power players is likely to take new and unique forms. For the sake of discussion, we might call this the New Hollywood Equation, where content owners, talent, talent agents and the new distribution channels all stake out new territory and attempt to find new formula for dealing with the next generation of Hollywood. In this session, we bring together some of the best informed creative executives in the field.

Mike McCurry,
Co-Chair, Arts+Labs, former Press Secretary, President Bill Clinton: Mike is a veteran political spokesperson with 25 years of Washington DC policy experience. McCurry served in the White House as press secretary to President Bill Clinton from 1995-1998. He also served as spokesman for the Department of State (1993-1995) and director of communications for the Democratic National Committee (1988-1990). McCurry has also held leadership roles in several national campaigns, including national press secretary for the vice presidential campaign of Senator Lloyd M. Bentsen (1988), and spokesman and political strategist in the presidential campaigns of Senator John Glenn (1984), Governor Bruce Babbitt (1988) and Senator Bob Kerrey (1992). McCurry also serves on boards or advisory councils for Share Our Strength, the Center for International Private Enterprise, the Council for Excellence in Government, the Junior Statesmen Foundation, the Wesley Theological Seminary, and the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University.

Dave Martin, VP, Digital, Ignited Agency: Manage all digital media planning and buying teams for Ignited's media clients, including Universal Pictures and Universal Home Entertainment products.











Howard T. Owens, Managing Director, Reveille: is responsible for creating and developing a wide range of innovative programming and content for television and across various online platforms. Mr. Owens is one of four Reveille executives who share management responsibilities for the company. He has been with Reveille from its inception in 2002. Since joining Reveille, Mr. Owens has served as co-creator and executive producer of Nashville Star, which aired for five seasons on USA Network and will debut on NBC in the summer of 2008. He is also an executive producer of American Gladiators, the hit show from NBC that premiered in January 2008, and a co-executive producer of NBC’s The Biggest Loser. In addition, Mr. Owens is the executive producer of My Dad Is Better Than Your Dad (NBC), Legally Blonde The Musical: The Search for Elle Woods (MTV), The N’s Student Body (The N) and Eyes on Target (The History Channel). Mr. Owens is also the co-creator and co-executive producer of NBC’s The Restaurant, Bravo’s Blow-Out and MTV’s Date My Mom and Parental Control. He executive produced the first two seasons of F/X’s 30 Days as well as ESPN’s Bound For Glory, an eight-episode docu-series that Reveille produced in partnership with Full Circle Entertainment and was fully financed by Dodge, State Farm and Reebok. One of Mr. Owens’ most significant accomplishments was architecting Reveille’s landmark deal with Microsoft, whereby Reveille creates and produces online content for MSN. Prior to Reveille, Mr. Owens was an agent in the corporate consulting and television packaging divisions at the William Morris Agency, representing television producers as well as top brands including Maxim Magazines, InStyle Magazine, eBay and Miramax Films. Before working at William Morris, he co-founded and served as a managing partner for Outdoor Concepts, a privately held outdoor media company that was purchased by Titan Media/New York. Prior to launching his media career, Mr. Owens was an attorney in private practice in Bridgeport, Connecticut, where he also served as a staff clerk for the Office of the State’s Attorney. As part of the 30 Days production team, Mr. Owens has received two 2007 Insight Awards of Excellence from the National Association of Film and Digital Media Artists for his work on the “Atheist/Christian” episode and for outsourcing other episodes. In addition, Mr. Owens received a GLAAD Award for the episode “Straight/Gay” and has been honored by the Muslim Public Affairs Council with its 2005 Voice of Courage and Conscience Media Award for the episode “Muslims and America.” He was also nominated for a prestigious PGA award for his work on 30 Days. Howard T. Owens lives in Los Angeles, California.

Howard Stein has been named Senior Vice President of Digitial Development for FremantleMedia North America (FMNA), it was announced today by Eugene Young, Chief Creative Officer of FMNA and to whom Stein reports. In this newly created position, Stein will work closely with FremantleMedia Enterprises, the licensing arm of FMNA, to leverage the company’s current and future formats for the web, develop and produce original online franchises, and mine FMNA’s extensive format library to create web-based, multi-media programs for various portals that enhance the online experience. “Howard has a significant track record in the digital space,” said Young in making the announcement. “We’re thrilled to have him join our expanding team as we continue to create content across multiple platforms.” Prior to joining FMNA, Stein was head of development and production for original programming at Yahoo!, where he executive produced many of their online initiatives and played a key role in developing new programming for Yahoo! Entertainment. During his five-year tenure, he created and/or executive produced numerous webcasts and programming initiatives including Yahoo! Music’s emerging artist platform “Who’s Next?”; the “Pepsi Smash” artist/pop culture program; the exclusive “Howard Stern Walks Live” webcast; the “Mission Impossible III” premiere live webcast; and Yahoo! Music’s flagship live music program, “Nissan Live Sets,” which featured numerous recordings artists including Christina Aguilera, Tony Bennett, Incubus, Beck, Snoop Dogg, Kelly Clarkson, The Stooges and The Foo Fighters, among others. Before his work as head of production, Stein served as a producer in original programming for the portal, where he was instrumental in creating all original content for LAUNCH/Yahoo! Music properties, including “Blue for Music TV” for American Express and warpedtour.com, the longest-running summer music festival in the United States.

Carlson Choi, Director Interactive Marketing, Activision: Fusing creativity with technology is the key to profitable business returns. With over 10 years of experience in new business concept development, corporate branding and strategy, internet strategy and marketing, product marketing, marketing operations, creative services, community marketing and investor relations, Carlson has been involved in driving company culture and business transformation, establishing new internet based business lines, developing strategic partnership and launching new products.

Mark J. Kapczynski, Chief Operating Officer, Kontrol Media: Mark Kapczynski has a successful track record as a serial entrepreneur, chief executive and media industry expert. His current venture, Kontrol Media Corp., is an idea incubator for startups and senior professionals in the media and technology markets including Web 2.0, mobile, and television. Prior to that, he was founder and CEO of MESoft, a media and entertainment software company, for which Kapczynski raised two rounds of seed and venture capital funding exceeding $8MM. Under his leadership, the company also grew its distribution to a global level and partnered with leading IT companies, such as IBM, Sun and AMD, and media companies that include Avid, Ascent Media and Sony. Additionally, he received a patent for a digital media workflow process. From 1995 to 2002, Kapczynski worked at Microsoft Corporation as their Director of Worldwide Media & Entertainment Solutions Group. During that time, he worked with numerous digital media and internet start-ups such as Homestore (now Move.com), Movielink, and MeTV. Mark Kapczynski got his first taste at being an entrepreneur in 1993 when he founded Digital Genesis-a pioneer in the internet/e-commerce space-which was sold to publicly-traded Netgateway, Inc. (NGWY, now IIG) three years later. Mr. Kapczynski graduated from UCLA film school and continues to be active in multiple industry associations that span media, mobile telecom, technology, and Internet Web 2.0. In his free time, Mr. Kapczynski enjoys car racing and playing the drums.

Baris Karadogan, Partner, Fuse Capital: Baris focuses on identifying investment opportunities in digital media with a principal emphasis on the Internet. Concurrently, Baris also serves as the CEO of HIP Digital Media, a Digital Music company in the firm's portfolio. Prior to joining the firm, Baris worked for six years at U.S. Venture Partners, a leading Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm. Baris' recent board seats/investments include: Radar Networks, HIP Digital Media, Like.com, SpectraLinear, Minerva Networks, Redline Communications (LSE: REDL) and Aspendos Communications. Before becoming a venture capitalist, Baris worked in both engineering and marketing at 3Com/U.S. Robotics, where he worked to develop the company's networking and cable industry products. His efforts at U.S. Robotics resulted in a number of U.S. patents. Baris holds an MBA from Stanford University Graduate School of Business, where he was an Arjay Miller Scholar, and an MS in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University. He earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from Lafayette College, where he graduated summa cum laude.
