Larry Gerbrandt, Principal, Media Valuation Partners: As principal of Media Valuation Partners he oversees the firms valuation, strategic consulting, market research and litigation support engagements, advising clients on the economics of media and content. Prior to MVP he was SVP/gen. mgr. of Nielsen Analytics, a division of The Nielsen Company, focusing on emerging media technology economics and advertising models. During as 20-year career at Kagan World Media he launched more than 25 newsletters and databook products, including The Economics of Basic Cable Networks, Cable Network Investor, TV Program Investor, VOD Investor and Streaming Media Investor. His background also includes experience in film and video production (Brimstone Films), commercial photography (The Shootist), cable TV system operations (Orion Cable Systems) and magazine publishing (Cable World).
Seth Shapiro, Principal, New Amsterdam Media LLC: Seth Shapiro is a two-time Emmy® winner and a leader in the profitable application of new technology to emerging business models. He has managed digital media initiatives for and with the Walt Disney Company, Comcast, DIRECTV, TiVo, Time Warner Cable, Showtime, HBO, STARZ, Sun Microsystems, Universal, Goldman Sachs and various venture, private equity and startup concerns. Shapiro is Principal of New Amsterdam Media LLC and Partner at Media Valuation Partners and the Opportunity Management Company. He is also a Founder of ARC: The A&R Channel, a VOD network available in 17,000,000 US cable homes via Comcast. As Head of Production at DIRECTV Advanced Services, Shapiro managed over 20 service launches across four platforms, designed the groundbreaking NFL DVR Highlights On Demand Service and was a key contributor to the 2002 DIRECTV/TiVo Master Agreement. Shapiro is a member of OVP Venture Partners' Technology Advisory Group, the Television Academy's Blue Ribbon Emmy Committee, the AFI Digital Content Lab, the IP Media Conference Advisory Board,the Producer's Guild New Media Council and the Milken Institute. He is a magna cum laude graduate of New York University and was Adelbert Alumni Scholar at CWRU and the Cleveland Institute of Music.
Richard Yen, Director, Saban Ventures: Richard Yen is a Director at Saban Ventures, an early-stage venture firm based in Los Angeles focused on digital media, mobile and consumer Internet investments. Prior to joining Saban Ventures, Richard was a Principal at Blueprint Ventures in San Francisco where he established the firm's digital media and Internet investing practice. He led early-stage investments and was an active Board member at several leading digital media start-ups. Prior to that, Richard was at Rustic Canyon Partners, an early-stage technology venture capital firm in Southern California where he focused on software infrastructure and wireless investments. In his prior operating roles, Richard played a lead role as the fourth employee at ShockMarket, a Silicon Valley-based consumer Internet start-up that raised $6 million in venture funding and grew to 25 employees. As Director of Technology, he oversaw software development, negotiated and closed sales of first-generation products, and assisted with venture fundraising. Richard earned a BS in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science from UC Berkeley and an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management, both with high honors. Richard is a graduate of the Kauffman Fellows Program.
James Dix, Senior Equity Research Analyst, Wedbush Morgan Securities: Mr. Dix is a senior equity research analyst at Wedbush Morgan Securities providing coverage of companies in the media and entertainment sector, with a focus on advertising, advertising agencies, and broadcasting. Prior to joining Wedbush Morgan Securities, Mr. Dix was at Deutsche Bank for nine years, most recently as a senior equity research analyst covering companies in the radio and TV broadcasting, cable networks, satellite radio, and out of home advertising sectors, and prior to that as an associate covering companies in the TMT sector. Mr. Dix holds a B.A. and an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago and a J.D. from the University of Virginia, and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Beta Gamma Sigma. He is also a Chartered Financial Analyst.
James C. Roberts III, Managing Partner, Global Capital Law Group PC: Mr. Roberts is the managing partner of Global Capital Law Group PC and CEO of the strategic consulting firm owned by the law firm, the Global Capital Strategic Group. These two groups comprise the organization known as the Global Capital Group. Global Capital advises clients on new initiatives, mergers & acquisitions and new international markets. Clients range from Fortune 100 corporations such as News Corporation and its subsidiaries, MySpace.com and Fox Interactive Media, to start-ups in digital media, Internet, software, medical and biotechnology, nanotechnology and environmental technology industries. The firm has offices in California and Colorado and just opened its first European office in Milan, Italy. The consulting firm helps clients to capitalize on strategic opportunities in new marketsincluding strategic analysis, alliances and mergers & acquisitions. Previously, Mr. Roberts was managing partner of Praxis LLP, a transactional law firm, and CEO of its strategic consulting subsidiary. Mr. Roberts founded the first virtual office for a California law firm. Prior to Praxis, Mr. Roberts was CEO of The Atlantic Advisory Group, a strategic consulting firm advising media and digital clients.
Brian J. Marler, Senior Vice President, Financial Advisory Services, Houlihan Lokey: Mr. Marler is a Senior Vice President in Houlihan Lokeys Los Angeles office, where he is a member of the Media, Sports & Entertainment Group. His experience includes valuing closely held and publicly traded businesses and securities for recapitalizations, leveraged buyouts, mergers and acquisitions, ESOPs and general corporate planning purposes. He has performed complex financial analyses and has broad experience in valuing intellectual property in the media and entertainment industries. He has worked extensively with leading media, sports and entertainment companies, including Sony Pictures, NBC, DreamWorks, Warner Bros., Comcast, Major League Baseball, House of Blues, Gray Television and Six Flags. Before joining Houlihan Lokey, Mr. Marler was a controller at Polygram Filmed Entertainment, responsible for financial reporting, film accounting, and budgeting. Earlier, he was a member of Spelling Entertainments corporate finance group, responsible for accounting, budgeting, strategic analyses and SEC reporting. Mr. Marler earned a B.S. in business administration/finance from California State University at Northridge and an M.B.A. from the University of Southern California. He holds the designation of Chartered Financial Analyst and is registered with FINRA (formerly the NASD) as a General Securities Representative (Series 7 and 63).
