CC1 The Cable Conference at CES The Cable and the CE Industries: Leadership and Innovation in High Definition, Set-tops, Advertising, Broadband, Mobile & Games As cable industry executives further migrate to CES to each year, the message is loud and clear that the cable industry, from the MSOs to the technology and content companies are at the core of our consumer electronics future. The billions of dollars invested by the cable industry in state of the art technology has paved the way for many tens of millions high definition television viewers and ubiquitous broadband, telephone and mobile access nationwide. As the demands of the consumer for more advanced PVR, set-top and interactive services become even greater, it is the cable industry that will respond. In this session, we welcome a significant group of cable industrys leadership. John Honeycutt, Executive Vice President & Chief Media Technology Officer, Discovery Communications: John Honeycutt is responsible for Discoverys strategic media technology planning and governance globally, and for its international broadcast operations. He is also charged with identifying future media technology trends and enacting operational efficiencies across Discoverys properties around the world. Additionally, he is leading Discoverys internal digitization initiative in which the company is migrating from a single-thread, linear content creation and distribution environment to a multi-channel, non-linear, file-based process. Honeycutt directed the design and launch of the Discovery Television and Technology Center in Sterling, Va., the state-of-the-art home for network origination of 13 of Discoverys U.S. networks and BBC America. The facility is a fusion of broadcast and information technology that utilizes digital files paired with high-bandwidth data networking to provide cost-effective flexibility that can evolve with Discovery as it brings content to a growing number of subscribers through traditional and new media. Honeycutt oversees the Discovery Television and Technology Center and two in-house production centers in Silver Spring, Md., and Miami, which provide post-production and creative services to Discoverys businesses worldwide as well as architecture and standards, television engineering, affiliate technology and network operations support. Before joining Discovery in 2003 as senior vice president, television operations group, Honeycutt served as senior vice president of broadcast operations for Fox Cable Networks in Los Angeles. A native of Massachusetts, Mr. Honeycutt holds a Bachelor of Science in Communications from Fitchburg State College. He lives in the Washington, D.C. area with his wife and two sons.
Davina Kent, Director, Strategic Alliances, Comcast: Davina has been involved in the entertainment and media industry for over a decade. Davina joined the Strategic Alliances team at Comcast in February 2008 working with the national advertising community to help design and commercialize Comcast's emerging digital advertising portfolio, including VOD products, interactive applications, addressable solutions, and set-top-box analytics. Prior to joining Comcast, Davina worked for TiVo initially to lead the TiVo launch in the UK partnered with BSkyB based in London. She then transitioned back to the United States to play a key role, as Vice President of National Advertising Sales, building TiVo's advertising and audience measurement business. Before joining TiVo, Davina held marketing and business development roles at Buena Vista Home Entertainment and DIRECTV. As a marketing executive at DIRECTV she supported the launch of the satellite service in the United States. To extend her international experience, Davina joined Galaxy Latin America to lead the launch of DIRECTV throughout Latin America as a Marketing and Sales executive.
Edward L. Huguez, Executive Vice President, Affiliate Sales and Marketing, Starz Entertainment: Edward L. Huguez is executive vice president, affiliate sales and marketing for Starz Entertainment. Huguez reports to Bill Myers, president and chief operating officer, and is responsible for all aspects of sales and affiliate relations. Huguez came to Starz Entertainment in August, 2004, from Midstream Technologies, Inc., where he served for three years as president, chief executive officer and chairman. Midstream is a Seattle-based company that provides interactive and video-on-demand technology to cable television companies. Huguez was part of the executive team that launched DIRECTV and built it into the nations largest direct broadcast satellite service. From 1992 to 1998 Huguez worked for DIRECTV as vice president and general manager, new media and interactive programming and platforms group, and, prior to that, as vice president, programming acquisitions. Huguez began his career in the multi-channel industry working for ESPN in affiliate sales from 1987 to 1992. His experience also includes service from 1998-2000 as chief operating officer at Intervu, Inc., a pioneer and market leader in video and audio streaming over the Internet for such companies as CNN, NBC and CCBN. In 2000 Intervu was acquired by Akamai Technologies, Inc., where Huguez served as senior vice president. Huguez received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Arizona State University in 1980 and his MBA from the John E. Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA in 1992. He and his wife, Betsy, have two children. Starz Entertainment, LLC, is a premium movie service provider operating in the United States. It offers 16 movie channels including the flagship Starz® and Encore® brands with approximately 16.8 million and 31.4 million subscribers respectively. Barry Frey, Senior Vice President, Advanced Platform Sales, Cablevision Systems Corp. (CVC): An innovative and visionary media and marketing executive with a proven record of success, Barry Frey heads up Cablevisions Advanced Platform Sales initiative, developing and launching measured video on demand (VOD) television, branded content executions, interactive television, Internet and other digital opportunities for the advertising community. Mr. Freys unit utilizes Cablevisions advanced two-way fiber-rich networks ability to provide a robust interactive experience for both brands and consumers. Cablevisions cable service with the nations highest digital penetration rate of over 83%, and having received an unprecedented four interactive Emmy Awards has long been recognized as an industry pioneer and leader in cable service innovation. National advertisers who have owned their own interactive VOD channel positions via work with Mr. Frey and his team include Disney Vacations, American Express, Sony Electronics, Jet Blue, General Motors, Unilever (Bertolli, I Cant Believe Its Not Butter! and Slimfast), FX Network, Ford, Mars Brands (Dove Chocolate) and The U.S. Navy, to name a few. Working with this roster of blue chip clients; Cablevision has developed unique and award-winning dedicated branded channels for advertisers that consistently engage, entertain, educate and motivate consumers. Cablevision also provides marketers with the opportunity to take advantage of tailored VOD formats within the companys proprietary and groundbreaking Optimum Autos and Optimum Homes platforms as well as the Cablevisions Optonline Web Portal. The company also offers a continually growing list of innovative communications tools and multi-Emmy Award-winning technologies. Having previously served in senior sales and marketing positions with USA Networks, Crown Media and the National Basketball Association, Mr. Frey has successfully built, pioneered and overseen divisions connecting the advertising community with new and important media, entertainment and technology platforms on a domestic and international basis. At Crown Media, as senior vice president overseeing global sales for the Hallmark Channel, Mr. Frey managed the division that created and sold televisions first digital product placement agreements. Previously, as senior vice-president for the NBA, he oversaw the development of multi-million dollar, multi-platform advertiser partnerships with the nations leading marketers. Earlier in his career he was responsible for leading the international sales, new business development and interactive efforts at USA Networks (USA Network and Sci-Fi Channel), and serving on both domestic and global channel and Internet launch teams. Mr. Frey has served as a board member for the International Advertising Association and currently guides industry initiatives for Advanced Advertising within The Cable Advertising Bureau, CTAM On Demand and the cross MSO Consortium (which works closely with the AAAA in developing guidelines for VOD and ITV platforms). Mr. Frey often speaks on the future of media, advertising and television at conferences in the U.S. and in Europe.
Andrew Solmssen, Executive Vice President, Schematic: Andrew manages national accounts and client service for Schematic. As such, he directs Schematic's account managers and is responsible for client satisfaction and retention. He serves as a consultant on selected client engagements, providing strategic planning and advice. Andrew's work at Schematic has received several awards and been profiled publications for in areas including cable television marketing, law firm technology, and consumer electronics. Andrew has nearly a decade of experience creating interactive projects and applications for a wide range of businesses. He previously served as Executive Producer at Kaufman Patricof Enterprises (KPE). At KPE, Andrew spearheaded major initiatives for Variety, TBS Superstation, Discovery, Capitol Records, and America Online. In 1997, he developed and produced the most popular piece of content on AOL. Sent to the West Coast to start KPE's Los Angeles office, Andrew grew that business, producing Web sites and software projects for Nielsen, New Line Cinema, and Princess Cruises. He is a frequent speaker on the role of the interactive media on businesses, and is a leader in the Los Angeles technical community. Andrew is a graduate of Hamilton College.
