And 50 years after its start, at its heart, the cable industry remains true to its word but how things have changed. Video is now more than television. Video is at the heart of how consumers experience their daily lives. Video represents all-access all the time programming from a world of entertainment and information providers. Video is broadband and that represents video access to hundreds of millions of video websites. Video is mobile, video is how consumers share their home movies and personal photography with friends. The cable industry has created a video infrastructure across platforms, from high definition to mobile that learns and responds as the needs of the consumer communications lifestyle emerges. Lisa Schwartz, Executive Vice President Distribution, Operations and Business Development, IFC Entertainment: As executive vice president of distribution, operations and business development for IFC Entertainment, Lisa Schwartz serves as the senior distribution strategist for the division and is responsible for creating, identifying and securing revenue-generating opportunities. Ms. Schwartz created a new infrastructure within IFC Entertainment to fully develop and maximize the business model for IFC In Theaters, the on-demand component of IFC Entertainment's theatrical film date and date distribution initiative. The day and date distribution model is an industry first, distributing films theatrically and simultaneously on-demand. It has met with great success due to the strong demand for multi-platform content. Ms. Schwartz oversees distribution for IFC Entertainment's operations across all platforms, including pay TV, broadcast, home video, and fast growing new platforms such as video-on-demand (VOD), subscription video-on-demand (SVOD), foreign sales, and portable devices. In addition, she serves as point person on all of the day-to-day activities across IFC Entertainment businesses. Ms. Schwartz brought more than 20 years experience in sales and marketing to IFC Entertainment. Prior to joining the division, she served as senior vice president of national accounts and advanced services for Rainbow Network Sales, the national distribution division of IFC Entertainment's parent company Rainbow Media Holdings LLC. There, Ms. Schwartz played a significant role in pioneering the introduction of IFC In Theaters and developing key strategies that maximized IFC Entertainment's relationship with filmmakers and MSOs. She also managed the Comcast corporate account for Rainbow Media's AMC, WE tv, and IFC and was responsible for distribution and contract negotiations for all distributors for several of Rainbow Media's VOD services, including LIFESKOOL, SPORTSKOOL (sold in 2008) and WE tv On Demand. Previously, Ms. Schwartz held various key affiliate distribution positions within the Company. Ms. Schwartz earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and communications from Cabrini College. She is also an alumna of CTAM University, the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing's executive management program at Harvard Business School. Ms. Schwartz is a member of CTAM, New York Women in Film and Television (NYWIF), Women In Cable Telecommunications (WICT) and a WICT Philadelphia Chapter mentor. Ms. Schwartz also serves as the president of the Board of Trustees for the Country Day School of the Sacred Heart, a private all girls college preparatory school in Bryn Mawr, PA.
Marc DeBevoise, SVP of Business Development and Strategy, Starz Media LLC: Marc DeBevoise is the SVP of Business Development and Strategy for Starz Media LLC, responsible for the generation, evaluation and execution of business development and growth opportunities. Marc is primarily focused on exploring opportunities related to emerging digital platforms. Digital delivery deals DeBevoise has overseen include content distribution agreements with Amazon Unbox, Xbox Live 360, Heavy.com, Netflix and others. DeBevoise and his team were also responsible for the launch of manga.com, a destination site for global fans of Japanese anime animation. Prior to joining the company in 2006, DeBevoise was the Director of Emerging Markets for NBC Universal Digital Media. In this role, DeBevoise was responsible for generating and executing new business development opportunities related to NBCUs Internet/Broadband and Wireless businesses. DeBevoise joined NBCU as a member of the Business Development group where he executed various corporate-level projects and transactions including the evaluation of potential acquisitions and investments in digital media and related industries, the analysis of various motion picture slate-financing structures for Universal Pictures, and the integration, strategic review and restructuring of Universal Parks & Resorts. Prior to joining NBCU, DeBevoise was an Associate in the Technology, Media &Telecommunications Investment Banking Group at JPMorgan in San Francisco and New York. In this role, DeBevoise executed and advised on equity, debt and M&A transactions in various sectors including Internet Media, Software, and Information & Business Services. DeBevoise has also worked in Corporate Financial Planning & Operations at Cablevision Systems Corporation and Motion Picture & Television Production Finance at Miramax Films. DeBevoise received his MBA with distinction in Finance and Entertainment, Media & Technology from NYU's Stern School of Business and his BA in Economics and Computer Science from Tufts University.
Ken Papagan, President & Chief Strategy Officer, Rentrak Corporation: Mr. Papagan is responsible for incubating, implementing and driving operations of all new business initiatives and setting the strategic direction of Rentrak Corporation, a leader in audience measurement tracking media consumption across numerous distribution platforms including, Theatrical Film, Home Video, On Demand Content, and Advertising. Ken was a founding executive for the start-up of 9 television networks including Nickelodeon, MTV, ON TV, and the JCPenny Shopping Channel where he was Co-Executive Producer. For the past 10 years, Ken has been primarily focused on Digital Media across all platforms globally working with such clients as AT&T, Broadband, USWest, Bloomberg, Flextech and others. Among his accomplishments at Rentrak are the launches of Retail Essentials and OnDemand Essentials, which is currently aggregating VOD viewer usage data for more than 50% of the VOD, enabled cable universe, including Comcast, Cablevision and others. The service is currently processing overnight On Demand data representing 32 million set top boxes. The service has garnered 42 content providing clients including NBC/Universal, CBS, MTV, Paramount, and Warner Brothers. He is currently developing New Business in On Demand Advertising and Linear Television audience measurement.
Denmark West is President of Digital Media for BET Networks. Appointed to this role in July 2007, West leads the companys expanding portfolio of digital brands, including BET.com, BET Mobile, BET on Demand and BETs digital download offerings, and oversees the development and implementation of the companys global digital strategy. Prior to joining BET Networks, West had served as Executive Vice President and Chief of Operations, Global Digital Media, for MTV Networks since January 2007. He worked directly with the President of Global Digital Media and helped to oversee all overall digital operations for the company and coordinated e-commerce and digital marketing across MTVNs properties. West also led the team focused on strategic partnerships with large traditional software, hardware and network infrastructure companies such as Adobe, and was the primary leader in driving search initiatives, including the companys partnership with and implementation of Yahoo!s search marketing services. Before that, West was Executive Vice President, Strategy and Business Development, where he was a key driver behind MTVNs movement into the multiplatform consumer environment. In this role, West aided in the development of key strategies including approaches to social media, games and digital music. He also led evaluation, drove execution and spearheaded the integration of several digital acquisitions. West has a proven track record of formulating winning strategies, investments and partnerships throughout his career, and has managed transactions public and private equity investments, acquisitions and divestitures and joint venture creation. Prior to joining MTV Networks, he most recently held the title of Chief of Staff for the Windows Client Division at Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, Wash. In that position, West supported both the head of the Windows Client Business Group and its CFO, and played central roles in the analysis of investment opportunities and long range planning development. During a Microsoft tenure spanning over six years, West held a number of positions in which he helped to drive numerous strategic initiatives, investments and partnerships to help the company expand into, and grow within, new consumer avenues. These sectors included console gaming, digital media, e-commerce, wireless data and interactive TV. Before joining Microsoft, West worked in Distressed Securities trading in the Fixed Income Division at Goldman, Sachs and Co. Prior to his time at Goldman, West worked in investment banking focused on entertainment, communications and technology for Brenner Securities Corporation and Smith Barney. He received both an AB and an MBA from Harvard University.
John Zehr was named senior vice president, digital media production in June 2007. He is responsible for developing the user experience, innovating new technology features, and driving content experiences across all of ESPNs digital media platforms. Previously he served as vice president, product development where he drove the content and product experience behind Mobile ESPN. Prior to focusing on ESPN mobile content, Zehr was the vice president, engineering for the Walt Disney Internet Group (WDIG) overseeing technology direction and core platform development for all WDIG supported Web sites, including consumer destinations ABCNEWS.com, ESPN.com and Disney.com. During his tenure, DIGSTREAM, the underlying technology behind ESPN Motion, was developed and delivered to the marketplace. He has also served as vice president, technology for ESPN.com playing a key role in helping ESPN.com become the premier internet sports property. Under his direction, ESPN.com has received critical and popular acclaim for pioneering technical features that deliver the best sports experience online. It was in this capacity that he was a contributing partner in the development of the patented three play technology. Zehr joined ESPN.com in 1995 and has served in a variety of positions with the site and its parent company, Starwave Ventures (a Paul Allen funded startup). Starwave was subsequently purchased by WDIG. Before joining Starwave, Zehr was a consultant with Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) in its technology services group. He specialized in the telecommunications practice working on a number of projects with major carriers integrating with core telephony systems. A resident of Connecticut, he holds a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from University of Virginia and is a native of New Jersey.
Ben Mendelson is the co-founder and president of the Interactive Television Alliance, the primary trade association representing the broad interests of the ITV industry. Ben has been an innovator in sponsor-based programming and has been involved in New Media technology from its earliest days. He was the founding executive of various early on-line companies (Interactive Center, Internet Imaging, Internet Outfitters), head of the Internet division of a magazine publishing company (Curtco Freedom), VP of Internet Development for the Electronic Retailing Assoc. (ERA), and SVP of Business Strategies at an investment bank (Winterberry Group). __Before his involvement with Interactive technologies, Ben was primarily involved in the art world. From 1981 1991, he owned and operated LA Art Photographers Assoc. (LAPA), an art gallery and resource center for fine art photography. In 1992, he founded PhotoSource a gallery and resource center for high quality digital imaging. His interest in facilitating the creative process has been a guiding influence, whether from the art community or from the business community. __In 2002, Ben co-founded 2degree Partners with his business partner, Allison Dollar. 2DP manages the ITV Alliance and provides business strategies that include Direct Response TV, ITV, and cross-media marketing. Ben has taught at the American Film Institute (AFI), UCLA Extension, and the So. CA Institute of Architecture (SCIArch) and has been published in numerous magazines and trade journals. He is on the advisory board of the AFI Enhanced TV Program, the exec. committee of the IMPG at the Television Academy, and is a familiar speaker at many Technology, Marketing and Media conferences.
