Publishing - News Media 2.0: Re-Imagining of News Media, the Newspaper and Magazine Industries: Broadband, Mobile, UGM, IPTV and Advertising
The news media, newspaper and magazine industries can no longer be thought of as print media. The web and mobile and soon to be IPTV and interactive TV strategies from the newspaper and magazine industries are among the most interesting and innovative approaches to new media. In this session we will hear first-hand from the leaders in the Publishing 2.0 transformation and learn how these publishing brands have become media brands, how their content and business models have changed, and how they've capitalized on their recognition of the tremendous upside for revenue and multi-platform efficiencies.

Ned Desmond is the president of Time Inc. Interactive (TII), the central group at Time Inc. responsible for most of Time Inc.’s digital businesses and associated technology teams. Prior to assuming this role in early 2006, Desmond was executive editor of TII (2003- 2005). From 2000-2003 Desmond was editor and president of Business 2.0, the successor to eCompany Now, a Time Inc. magazine and website that he helped launch in San Francisco. In past roles Desmond was an executive at the Internet start-up Infoseek (1996-97) and Disney’s Go.com (1998-99). He established Infoseek Japan and led the teams that built the Go.com content channels. Prior to his work on the Internet, Desmond had an extensive career in journalism. He was aresearcher, writer and correspondent for Time magazine, and served as bureau chief in New Delhi (1988-1992) and Tokyo (1992-1996). He was also a senior correspondent for Fortune magazine (1997-98). Desmond has also written for The New York Review of Books, Foreign Affairs and The National Review, among other publications. He began his career in journalism at The Cape Cod Times and The Middlesex News in Massachusetts. He is a graduate of Amherst College (1980) and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy (1982). He was also a Reuters Fellow at OxfordUniversity. He served as a board member of Hoovers, then a public corporation (2002) and he also sat on the boardof the Churchill Club in Silicon Valley (2002-2003). Currently his is a member of the board of the Online Publisher’s Association and a member of the board of advisors of New York University’s Master’s in Publishing Program. He lives with his wife and three children in Chevy Chase, Maryland.



Vivian Schiller, Senior Vice President and General Manager, NYTimes.com: In this role, Vivian Schiller leads the day-to-day operations of NYTimes.com, the largest newspaper Web site on the Internet. Ms. Schiller had previously served as senior vice president, Television and Video for The New York Times and also executive vice president and general manager for the Discovery Times Channel, a joint venture with Discovery Communications. She has been with the Times Company since May 2002. Under Ms. Schiller's leadership, Discovery Times Channel distribution grew from 14 million households to more than 39 million, achieving early profitability and critical acclaim. During her tenure, The Discovery Times Channel also received numerous awards including three Emmys, two Overseas Press Club Awards and three National Headliner Awards. Before joining the Times Company, Ms. Schiller worked for Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. as executive vice president for CNN Productions. In this position, she led the CNN Newsgroup's long-form programming efforts, including the development and launch of People in the News (with People magazine) and CNN Presents. During her tenure with CNN, Ms. Schiller received numerous awards, including five Emmy Awards and two Peabody Awards. Earlier in her career, Ms. Schiller served as vice president and general manager of Turner Original Productions where she managed the documentary division of the Turner Entertainment Networks. In addition, she was senior producer for Turner's first-ever Oscar nominated program, Hank Aaron: Chasing the Dream, among other Peabody- and Emmy-winning productions. She began her career at Turner Broadcasting Systems, Inc. in 1988 as a Russian interpreter and production coordinator on projects in the former Soviet Union. Ms. Schiller earned her master's degree in Russian from Middlebury College in 1984 and her bachelor's degree in Russian and Soviet Studies from Cornell University in 1983.

Richard Glosser, Executive Director of Emerging Media, CondeNet: Richard Glosser joined CondeNet in December 2005 and is responsible for developing the company's video, mobile, podcast, and other new media initiatives. For almost 20 years, Mr. Glosser has been identifying and building new business opportunities and brands in traditional and digital media. He has worked across all facets of production and distribution of film, television, cable, broadband, and emerging platforms. Prior to CondeNet, Glosser had senior leadership roles at CSTV, Bolt, and NBC. Glosser's early career was at Sony Pictures Entertainment, where he spent over 11 years and was Founder and President of SPE's digital media division, Columbia TriStar Interactive. Also, while at Sony, he helped launch the massively multiplayer game Everquest and was part of the launch team of SPE's basic cable network, Game Show Network. Glosser has a BS from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from the Columbia Business School. He is married with two children and lives in New York City.



James M. Brady, Executive Editor, washingtonpost.com: Jim Brady was named executive editor of washingtonpost.com in November 2004. Prior to his appointment, Brady served as a consultant for Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive, focusing primarily on product development and strategy. This is Brady's second stint at washingtonpost.com. He served as sports editor and assistant managing editor for news from 1995 to 1999. Brady was on staff for the site's Web launch in June 1996, and helped coordinate the site's coverage of the Clinton impeachment proceedings. After leaving washingtonpost.com in 1999, Brady spent more than four years at America Online, serving as Group Programming Director, News & Sports; Executive Director, Editorial Operations; and Vice President, Production & Operations. During his time at AOL, Brady was in charge of the service's coverage of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the 2000 presidential election. Prior to his first stint at washingtonpost.com, Brady was as a sportswriter at The Washington Post from 1987 to 1995. During his career, Brady has also served as the Washington sports correspondent for UPI, interned as a sportswriter at Newsday and worked as a researcher for NBC during the 1992 Summer Games in Barcelona. Brady earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Print Journalism from The American University in 1989. Born in Queens, N.Y. and raised in Huntington, N.Y., Brady now lives with his wife, Joan, in Great Falls, Va.

Paul Slavin, Senior Vice President, ABC News Digital: Paul Slavin was named Senior Vice President, Digital, ABC News in September 2007. In this position he is responsible for all of ABC News’ digital content, including ABCNEWS.com, ABC News Now, mobile, and broadband. In addition, Mr. Slavin is responsible for all business development, marketing and operations for ABC News in the digital area. Prior to this appointment Mr. Slavin was the Senior Vice President for Worldwide Newsgathering, responsible for ABC’s worldwide newsgathering operation, including the national and foreign news desks and all bureaus, both domestic and international, ABC’s affiliate news service, NewsOne, ABC News Now, ABCNEWS.COM and ABC News special events. Mr. Slavin was also responsible for the ABC News broadcasts “World News with Charles Gibson” and “World News Saturday and Sunday.” From April 2000 to May 2003, Mr. Slavin was the executive producer of “World News Tonight with Peter Jennings,” responsible for editorial content and production of the network’s flagship news broadcast. In 1979 he joined ABC News as a desk assistant in New York and became an associate producer for “20/20” in 1981. A year later he moved to Washington, DC as a producer for “This Week with David Brinkley.” In 1984 Mr. Slavin became a field producer for the Washington, DC bureau and was assigned to cover the presidential campaign that year. Mr. Slavin joined “World News Tonight” in 1986 as a producer and worked with National Security correspondent John McWethy covering the Defense Department, the State Department and the intelligence agencies. In that capacity he traveled the world covering stories, including the last days of the war in Lebanon, the war in El Salvador and the conflict in Nicaragua. In 1988 he was named broadcast producer for “World News Tonight” in Washington, DC. Two years later Mr. Slavin joined “Day One” in New York as a magazine producer specializing in medical investigations. For one of the first times on television, he employed Hi-8 cameras for a piece on dying while incarcerated, giving the cameras to a team of former death row prisoners and asking them to document their lives in prison. In 1995 he returned to “World News Tonight” as the senior producer responsible for “American Agenda.” He was named senior program producer in 1998, where he was responsible for “The Closer Look,” “Your Money,” “Cutting Edge” and all series, as well as the broadcast’s education, technology, medical and science coverage. Mr. Slavin’s work has received numerous honors and recognition, including an Overseas Press Club Award, a Cine Award and several Emmy Awards. He was also part of the ABC News team that received a Peabody Award for its coverage of the events of September 11 and their aftermath. Mr. Slavin is a graduate of the University of Chicago. He and his wife live in New York City and have three sons.

Sue Cross, Vice President/Online, U.S. Newspaper Markets, Associated Press. Cross directs AP strategy, product development, business operations and online services for newspaper Web sites that collectively reach 60 million people a month. Current projects include expansion of AP’s Online Video Network, launched in 2006, development of Money & Markets, an innovative financial information service bridging print and online publications and redevelopment of AP’s hosted news services to create customizable, modular content and advertising options for more than 600 news Web sites. With a combined editorial and business background, Cross specializes in creating and packaging content that can be leveraged for multiple formats and audiences. In 2004-2005, Cross served as AP’s western regional vice president and led national expansion of AP’s services for the growing ethnic media market. With creation of new products combining AP’s domestic and international reporting strengths, she tripled AP’s U.S. Spanish market in two years. Cross brings to online business development a passion for news and more than 20 years of newsroom leadership. From 1998 through 2003 she was chief of bureau for Los Angeles, AP’s largest domestic news bureau, overseeing international, national and state coverage from California. Cross created a multimedia newsroom and expanded AP’s West Coast entertainment report with a focus on real-time coverage of entertainment events. She has been a bureau chief in Phoenix, assistant chief and news editor in Chicago, news editor for Texas, and covered the oil industry, environmental issues, politics, labor and immigration as a reporter in Ohio and Alaska. Cross has a BS in journalism from Ohio State University and is active in numerous journalism boards and organizations. The AP is a not-for-profit cooperative serving 1,700 newspapers and 5,000 radio and television stations in the U.S., plus more than 8,500 news media outlets in 121 other countries. Worldwide, more than a billion people every day read, hear or see AP news.

David L. Kang, J.D., Ph.D., Senior Vice President and General Manager of Subscription Services, Rodale. Mr. Kang leads online subscription services for Rodale, a leading publisher of health and wellness magazines and books, including Men's Health, Women's Health, Prevention, Runner's World, South Beach Diet, and An Inconvenient Truth. Rodale's online subscription services in diet and fitness include Bob Greene's Best Life, The Biggest Loser, Celebrity Fit Club and Men's Health Personal Trainer. Prior to Rodale, Mr. Kang was Senior Vice President, Entertainment at Major League Baseball Advanced Media, leading partnerships with music artists including Bob Marley, Elton John, Guns N' Roses, and The Game on official websites and developing paid content, ecommerce, sponsorship and ticketing revenue opportunities. In addition, Mr. Kang developed digital strategies for MLB Advanced Media sports partners, including AVP Pro Beach Volleyball. Prior to MLB Advanced Media, Mr. Kang was Senior Vice President, Strategic Development and New Media at the artist management company The Firm, developing "new model" deals encompassing multiple revenue streams for music artists including Korn and Ice Cube. Mr. Kang also developed digital strategies for The Firm’s artists including Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Vin Diesel, Kelly Clarkson, Linkin Park, Staind, and Criss Angel. Prior to The Firm, Mr. Kang was a media and entertainment consultant at McKinsey and Company, where he advised a music television entertainment client on its digital entertainment hub and its DVD, game and merchandise businesses. At McKinsey, Mr. Kang also led due diligence for private equity firms in wireless content and in music publishing and conducted primary market research for a leading cable MSO. Prior to McKinsey, Mr. Kang was Senior Vice President, New Technology and Strategic Development at BMG Entertainment, where he led a team of technology, strategy and finance specialists with worldwide responsibility in $4.7 billion music company. At BMG, Mr. Kang developed wholesale online distribution, CD copy protection and digital rights management strategies, negotiated BMG’s first online music download and subscription license with MusicNet, and managed a $50 million strategic investment fund and held board seats in two portfolio firms. Prior to BMG, Mr. Kang was an Assistant Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School where he published articles analyzing the effects of corporate governance on firm strategy and performance. At Harvard Business School, Mr. Kang also served as a technology evangelist for the School’s online course platform and distance learning initiatives, and taught in both the MBA and Executive Education programs. Mr. Kang holds a Joint Ph.D. degree in Organizational Behavior from Harvard University and Harvard Business School, an MA in Sociology from Harvard University, a J.D. from Harvard Law School, and an A.B. in Sociology / Organizational Behavior from Stanford University.
