Embracing the Personalized Consumer - Entertainment, Technology and Commerce - From the Digital Home to the Mobile Platform
The consumer lives in three digital environments, the home, work and mobile – experiencing what we might call the always connected, digital lifestyle. In this session, we will address how the technology, the content providers and developers have adapted themselves to the evolving needs of the digital lifestyle, serving a home-based media, a worked based media and mobile media. Whether it’s a wirelessly connected home with set-tops, PCs, HDTVs and phone devices; a broadband mobile device, a fully loaded media friendly car, a broadband workspace or public space, the consumer is connected all the time, sending or receiving information and content. In this session, we will explore what it means to create and enable that fully connected universe.

Richard B. Anderson, General Manager, IBM Global Media & Entertainment Industry, Moderator

Richard B. Anderson, IBM General Manager, Global Media & Entertainment Industry: Richard B. (Dick) Anderson has the global responsibility for the worldwide strategy, marketing, business development, industry solutions and product offerings for the Entertainment, Sports, Broadcast, Cable, Publishing and Advertising businesses throughout the world. He brings over twenty years of achievement, quantifiable results, and IBM know-how to his current positions as general manager for IBM’s Media & Entertainment Industry. Mr. Anderson has responsibility for IBM’s Media and Entertainment clients worldwide, and establishes new and innovative business strategies designed to securely position IBM as a digital solution and technological leader. He oversees global marketing, sales and solutions development for IBM’s media and entertainment customers worldwide, including broadcasting, publishing, advertising, sports, and new media. Previously, Mr. Anderson was general manager, enterprise Web management, where he was instrumental in accelerating IBM’s transformation into the world’s premier e-business, and was responsible for the development and implementation of enterprise-wide strategies for IBM’s use of the internet, highlighted by the restructuring and unification of IBM’s numerous Internet and Intranet Web sites. In addition, Anderson’s leadership also delivered increases in e-commerce and procurement via the web for IBM business partners, all of which resulted in over $1 billion of cost/expense savings. Prior to that position, he was general manager network services, IBM Global Services. Network services included the IBM Global Network, one of the world’s largest data networks. Since joining IBM in 1974, Mr. Anderson has held a succession of management positions including general manager, IBM Global Services, IBM Asia-Pacific; vice president, Networking Marketing, IBM United States, and regional manager, Los Angeles. He is a 1974 graduate of Stanford University and attended the Sloan School of Management at MIT in 1986-87 as an IBM Sloan Fellow.

Debbie Solomon is Senior Partner, Research Director at MindShare USA. She serves as an in-house consultant to the planning and buying groups on a wide variety of media research and planning issues. Her work encompasses all media disciplines and she has worked on all the agency’s clients. She is also part of MindShare’s global Insights team. Debbie was at J. Walter Thompson when the media departments of J. Walter Thompson and Ogilvy & Mather merged to become MindShare. She joined J. Walter Thompson after working in the Media Research Department at Leo Burnett. This was preceded by marketing research positions at Britt & Frerichs, Quaker Oats, and Milton Bradley.She has won a number of industry honors. Recently, Media Magazine named her one of the 10 most influential people “navigating the waters of the magazine business” and MIN named her to the “Sweet 16” in print. In 1998, she was named Top Kid Researcher by KidScreen magazine and earlyier, MediaWeek magazine elected her Media Research All-Star, largely for her work in children’s measurement. And Esquire magazine has honored her as a “Woman We Love in Advertising.” She has also won several corporate awards including WPP’s Atticus Award for original published thinking for her paper on Wearout and J. Walter Thompson’s White Pea award for media innovation. Debbie has also been one of a select group of people invited to meet with the International Olympic Committee to advise them on the state of media in the future. Debbie has an M.A. in psychology from Duke University and a B.A. in psychology from the University of Chicago. You may have seen her articles in Advertising Age, AdMap, Marketing and Media Decisions, the Journal of Advertising Research and the Journal of Media Planning. She sits on the AAAA’s Consumer Magazine and Media Research Committees and chairs the Advertising Research Foundation’s Youth Research Council. She also is part of the Accrediting Council for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, the body that accredits Advertising programs at colleges and universities. In her spare time, Debbie indulges her creative side through silversmithing.


Martin J. Stein, Sr. Director, Marketing, IP Video Solutions, Home and Networks Mobility , Motorola, Inc.: Mr. Stein directs marketing and business development activities related to MPEG-based standard definition and high definition video processing products. These include satellite, cable, telco, and terrestrial transmission systems, access control and encryption systems, IP set tops, and commercial integrated receiver/decoders. Mr. Stein has also been instrumental in establishing third party partnership agreements to provide more comprehensive solutions for Motorola customers. Prior to joining Motorola’s Home & Networks Mobility ( formerly General Instrument), Mr. Stein was marketing manager for imaging, film, and video storage devices at Ampex Corporation, a leader in video recording equipment based in Redwood City, California. Mr. Stein earned a B.S. in industrial engineering at Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, and an M.B.A at California State University, Fullerton.






Toffer Winslow, Executive Vice President, Sales & Marketing, ChoiceStream: Toffer Winslow is responsible for the sales and marketing organizations as ChoiceStream continues to meet the demand for personalization products. Prior to joining ChoiceStream, Toffer was the Vice President of Product Management and Product Marketing at RSA, The Security Division of EMC. Before joining RSA, Toffer led product management, marketing and business development for the largest business unit of Empirix, and was also vice president of marketing at a pioneering Java development platform start-up. He is a graduate of the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration and the University of British Columbia.



Richard Carriere, SVP Americas, Nero: Richard Carriere is Senior Vice President – The Americas for Nero, leaders in the digital media industry. His role with Nero includes overseeing sales, marketing, operations, finance and business development teams in the United States, Canada and Latin America and leading them towards the company’s goals and targets. Carriere brings more than 20 years of high tech management experience, providing Nero with a holistic view of the digital media landscape and insight into the industry’s trends and future. Before joining Nero, Carriere was general manager at Corel Corporation, a publicly-traded application software company based in Ottawa, Canada. Previously, Carriere also served as a consultant at McKinsey & Company, where he was a member of the media and telecommunications practices and was a leader of the firm’s broadband initiative. Additionally, Carriere has worked for Ernst & Young in Montreal, Canada. Carriere earned an MBA from The Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth College. He also studied at the London Business School, and he graduated from the Université de Montréal with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Carriere is a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.


John K. Morrow, Vice President, Corporate Strategy Development and Execution, Scientific Atlanta, A Cisco Company: Vice President, Strategy Development and Execution, Transmission Network Systems, Scientific Atlanta, A Cisco Company: John Morrow is Vice President. Strategy Development and Execution, Transmission Network Systems for Scientific Atlanta, A Cisco Company. In this role, he is responsible for leading the development of strategies for profitable growth in Digital Media Networks and Transport and Access Networks—the two business units within Scientific Atlanta’s Transmission Network Systems. Products within these two business units range from advanced video compression encoders and multiplexers, to optical and RF electronics. Additionally, Morrow is responsible for tracking strategy execution and competitive benchmarking. Morrow joined Scientific Atlanta as Director of Strategic
Planning and Marketing in 1994, and has held positions in Mergers & Acquisitions, business development, and general management. Prior to joining Scientific Atlanta, Morrow worked in strategy consulting as a Manager for Corporate Decisions, Inc. (CDI) in Boston, MA. He also worked for 5 years in the U.S. Navy where he completed studies in nuclear engineering and served as a fast-attack submarine officer on board USS Chicago (SSN-721). Morrow earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Naval Academy and a Master in Business Administration from Harvard Business School. He is a member of CTAM and SCTE.


James Henderson, Vice President Market, Product and Business Development, Comcast Corporation: James Henderson recently joined Comcast Corporation as Vice President Market, Product and Business Development. He is a member of the senior leadership team reporting to the EVP New Business Development, responsible for establishing the vision and strategic "mandate" for innovative product strategies, roadmap and aggregate plans that enables the aggressive deployment of entrepreneurial products (voice, video, data and wireless) targeted at consumer and small business customer segments. Where he will apply demonstrated success in accelerated lifecycle product environment leading teams of product managers and developers through disciplined product strategy, roadmap definition, customer requirements, marketing requirements and feature requirements, pricing, margins, demand/supply forecasting, channel inventory, attachment rates relative to growth predictions and profitability predictions. Prior to joining Comcast Mr. Henderson worked for 6 years at Charter Communications as the Vice President Corporate, Business & Product Strategy. His primary focus was to seek growth opportunities across Charter’s consumer and commercial businesses. He was responsible for developing the long term strategic plans to grow both the individual lines of business and the companies overall prospects; analyze and manage business development initiatives including new product and service launches, new category introduction, alliances, acquisitions, divestitures and joint ventures. Mr. Henderson provided advice and guidance to Charter’s senior management on growth strategies; new media technology, content and programming issues; and market entry strategies and overall distribution channels. He has led the development of major corporate initiatives from inception, competitive analysis, funding, deal negotiations and ultimate product or service launch. Prior to joining Charter in 1999 Mr. Henderson worked within the e-Citi, a division of Citicorp, as Vice President of Emerging Information Technology & Strategy with responsibilities for the integration of leading edge customer fulfillment and relationship capabilities. In addition he oversaw management, development, due diligence, validation and deployment of new service technologies. From 1989 through 1998, Mr. Henderson served in a wide range of increasing management roles with Bell Atlantic and its predecessor NYNEX. Prior to his departure he served as Managing Director Outside Plant. Mr. Henderson oversaw the successful implementation of $1.6 Billion in Outside Plant related agreements that comprised 1,200 contracts covering 8,000 OSP material and services. While with Bell Atlantic Mr. Henderson held management positions in technology & engineering, marketing, new product development, competitive strategies, research and development, regulatory, strategic business development, and sourcing. Mr. Henderson earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Manhattan College and a bachelor’s degree in physics from LeMoyne College. He also holds a master’s degree in finance from Fordham University.
