Track I:
The Television, the PC, Online Video and the Digital Consumer Experience
The combination of the TV, the set-top, the broadband connection and digital video recorder is breaking down the barriers of TV viewing experience. Every player in the entertainment and technology food chain – from content owner to middleware and headend operator, to the subscriber service provider and finally to the CE manufacturer, all play an equally key role. The idea that consumers might use a TV, demanding personal and enhanced video services, as they do a computer has arrived – and it is our job to make the future happen today. In the near future, viewers might be watching a football game and at the same time, on a second window on the TV, that viewer might also be shopping for tank-tops or buying snacks from the supermarket. That viewer might be taping a show, watching a movie and doing research for a term paper on the web at the same time. The TV set will serve as gateway to entertainment and information as sure as the computer opens the door to a world of information. TV, interactive TV, IPTV, PVR TV, broadband based TV, there will likely be as many ways to describe the way consumers will use and access content and programming as there are companies supplying the options. In this session we will explore that coming future

Geoff Allen, Chairman & Founder, Anystream and Echo360: Watch out for Geoff Allen, chairman and founder of Anystream and Echo360. He’s not the kind of buttoned-up high-tech guru who sits around and plays it safe. No, he’s all action. All revolutionary. He thinks emerging technologies should crash through communication barriers, not create them. So it’s no wonder he continues to do just that—develop better, easier, and more reliable ways to communicate and broadcast on the Web and beyond. More than 15 years of experience in high-technology sales and marketing, product development and business operations has taught Allen many important lessons, but none greater than this: Give customers what they want. When he saw skyrocketing demand for video content on the Web, but no easy method for broadcasters to get it there, he started Anystream to make it happen. Anystream works by helping broadcasters manage content, comply with rights management issues and keep up-to-speed with the changing demands of the consumer. The company has grown from a five-person operation to an industry leader, partnering with such media heavyweights as AOL.com, CNN, MTV, FOX Sports, Associated Press and the BBC. What if you could break down barriers to learning by providing students worldwide access to the best minds in education through the digital recording and distribution of live college lectures? That was the call-to-arms behind Echo360 (formerly Apreso), a company also founded by Allen. Echo360’s lecture capture technology is currently installed at leading institutions, such as Harvard, MIT, Duke and NYU. The rest of Allen’s resume reads like the overachiever he is. He was general manager of Enterprise Solutions for the Anystream development group at Integrated Computing Engines, Inc. He has an extensive background in cutting-edge video app, previously serving as chief technology officer of iXL in Washington DC. He founded and served as president and chief executive officer of Axicom, the digital video advertising systems developer, and Source Digital, the integrator of digital video production systems. Allen is a member of Young Entrepreneur's Organization (YEO) and currently serves as vice president of technology for the international Board. He attended George Mason University as a Computer Science major and participated in the Birthing of Giants Entrepreneurial Management Program at MIT.
