Social Networks & User Generated Media as a Technology Challenge: The Platform, the Content & the Network
Social networks and user generated media are not always a success. Just like any innovation, the challenge is to be among those left standing after the race to be first is over. On a certain level, the era of the social networks and user generated media sites is just beginning. The technology is just starting to make a social network a living and breathing universe of communications and activity, but there is also the downside of getting up and running only to burn out and lose your momentum. In theory, every successful television show or community of users is a potential social network, but in reality, the translation process does not always take hold. In this session we will explore what it takes to create and maintain a successful social network and user generated media site.

Steve Jang, CMO and Head of Business Development, imeem: Steve is responsible for imeem’s content and technology partnerships, product management, and community marketing. Since the launch of the imeem service in early 2006 and under his marketing direction, the imeem community has grown to over 20 million unique users today and counts over 4,000 music labels, including all four major labels, and video content owners as partners. Prior to joining imeem, Steve worked in business development and marketing roles in digital/online media at EMI Music, XUMA, WR & Hambrecht + Co, and Salon.com. Steve earned a BA from the University of California, Berkeley and an MBA from University of Southern California.

Ross Reynolds is manager, platform research and development, technology partnerships Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.’s. The platform R&D group is charged with developing emerging media technology for Turner. Reynolds is responsible for working with Turner’s business units to develop R&D programs that help capitalize on opportunities in emerging media. For the past two years, he has focused Web 2.0 copyright and distribution strategy. He currently manages Turner’s anti-piracy technology operations and works with Turner’s legal department on anti-piracy policy and procedures. Reynolds is based in Atlanta and reports to Chris Sumsky, senior director of technology partnerships. Prior to joining platform R&D, Reynolds worked for Turner Latin America, where he worked with business development. Before joining Turner, he worked throughout the “Internet Boom” as a consultant helping Fortune 500 companies launch Internet businesses and products. Reynolds earned a masters in business administration in marketing and strategy from Emory’s Goizueta School of Business. He is fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian. Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., a Time Warner company, creates and programs branded news, entertainment, animation and young adult media environments on television and other platforms for consumers around the world.

Eric Chan, Director, Strategy and Marketing,Cisco Media Solutions Group: Eric Chan is the Director of Strategy and Marketing for the Cisco Media Solutions Group (CMSG), which develops and markets infrastructure software that bridges the gap between media-content owners and consumers. He is responsible for all products and marketing within this organization. CMSG was incubated by Chan and SVP/GM, Dan Scheinman, in December 2006, and currently has over 50 employees. Prior to CMSG, Eric Chan led the Consumer practice of Cisco's Corporate Business Development group, which handles all strategy, acquisitions and venture investments for the company. This group was responsible for acquisitions such as Linksys and Scientific-Atlanta. Chan also sat on various boards for early stage technology and media companies. Chan is a graduate of Harvard Business School, with an undergraduate degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

David Hyman, CEO and Founder of MOG: (www.mog.com), an online community where music lovers can quickly and easily show the world what they're listening to, express their musical tastes, and discover people through music and music through people. A digital media pioneer who started the first music website and sold one of the first ads on the Internet, Hyman has presented at countless digital media conferences, including Ad:Tech, CMJ, Digital Hollywood at CES, Digital Music Forum, and Plug. IN. The media often turn to Hyman as a charismatic, knowledgeable, and insightful expert resource. Recent media coverage of Hyman and MOG has included Billboard, Hollywood Reporter, MTV.com, Newsweek, Red Herring, Reuters, and Spin. Prior to MOG, Hyman held various roles (CEO, Executive VP, and Chief Strategy Officer) at Gracenote, the world's largest music database and music identification service. His successes included raising venture capital from Sequoia Ventures and bringing the company from $50,000 in annual booked revenue to over $20 million in four years. He was responsible for all aspects of the business, including the creation and development of Gracenote's formidable consumer electronics business, which is now responsible for approximately 50% of the company's revenue. Hyman played an integral role in the build-out of Gracenote's international business, including the creation of Gracenote Japan KK, and established sales offices in China, Korea, and Europe. Hyman created new businesses for Gracenote including song identification and state-of-the-art playlist management services. As SVP-Marketing at MTV Interactive, the digital holding company for all of MTV's online properties, Hyman oversaw all marketing activities for MTV.com, and VH1.com. His successes included leading an innovative 30 person guerilla marketing team and production of a highly successful $30 million television campaign. Hyman came to MTV through its acquisition of SonicNet, where he had been SVP, Sales & Marketing. At SonicNet, Hyman broke new ground in the online music arena, creating bleeding-edge products for ad sponsorships, including the development of the Web's first "Video-On-Demand" (V.O.D) platform, Streamland, the premiere website for music V.O.D. Before SonicNet, Hyman was co-founder of Addicted To Noise, the Web's first online music website. There, he was instrumental in shaping the perception that the Web is a place to build a brand for online marketers. Hyman brought many major brands online for the first time including Levi's, Coca Cola, Microsoft and Ford. Hyman forged the merger between Addicted To Noise and SonicNet, creating the largest online music website at the time. Hyman began his Internet career in 1994, when he pioneered the concepts of online advertising at Hotwired, the first online site that displayed advertising. While at Hotwired, David and the sales team sold the first online ads and developed many of the formats and metrics that are still used today, including the "ad banner", and "click-through rates." When Hyman is not thinking about online music experiences, he enjoys listening to music, obsessing on his stereo equipment, cooking, eating, snowboarding and spending time with his family.

Reena A Jadhav, Founder, CEO, CareerHero.com: Ms Jadhav is a serial entrepreneu r with a passion for game-changing, value-creating ideas. She recently founded CareerHero.com, a social network for college students to explore careers in a fun, interactive and safe environment. Companies and leading executives can launch career clubs with videos, interviews, forum, chat and more to introduce exciting careers to young explorers. CareerHero donates part of the proceeds to fund scholarships for gifted children. Prior to CareerHero, Ms. Jadhav served as Chief Marketing Officer at Conduit, the leading platform for building communities via toolbars. Conduit grew to over 12million users and 140,000 publishers during her tenure. Before Conduit she co-founded and served as Chief Marketing Officer at JobFlash, an award-winning service for automating hourly recruiting which was acquired by marked leader Taleo and also co-founded and ran product marketing at Done.com, an award-winning wireless messaging service. She has also worked at Oracle Corporation and PriceWaterhouseCoopers. Reena graduated summa cum laude from Wharton Business School with a Bachelors in Science and earned her MBA from Harvard Business School.

Michael Chin, SVP, Marketing, KickApps: Michael leads the company’s marketing and communications strategy and efforts to evangelize the market potential of social media and the KickApps platform for major brands, global media companies, independent publishers and professional web developers, and provides consultation to clients on creating and launching successful social media communities. He brings a broad background of experience in Internet and Web 2.0 technology, enterprise software, mobile entertainment and consumer electronics. Before joining KickApps, Michael was a director at Bite Communications, a global communications consultancy serving both blue chip companies and emerging start-up brands. At Bite, he spearheaded the agency’s New York City expansion to establish its media and entertainment services portfolio. Prior to that, Michael was Director of Marketing at StormPlay Entertainment Systems and an Account Manager at Niehaus Ryan Wong. Michael has worked with numerous well-known brands, including Virgin Life Care, BEA Systems, VERITAS Software, Become.com, Creative Labs and Netscape. Michael has a B.A. in Politics with certificates in Legal Studies and Peace & Justice Studies from the University of San Francisco.


Kelli Richards, President, The All Access Group: Kelli Richards is an established veteran and respected pioneer in the convergence of entertainment and technology, especially within the digital music/media arena (where she has been an active participant for the past decade). She's a catalyst for profitable creative breakthroughs that involve brands and technologies, and individuals at the top of their game. Basically, she connects the dots between technology companies and the entertainment industry – seeking new revenue streams and distribution opportunities for both. Kelli is the principal of her own company, the All Access Group, which specializes in harnessing the power of the Internet and e-commerce opportunities to create world class campaigns, facilitate strategic alliances, and produce unique projects for A-List celebrities and musicians, established corporations, as well as for numerous startups. She acts as a "Director of Entertainment Alliances" for hire to major technology companies -- creating strategic initiatives and spearheading content acquisition deals that allow for mutually advantageous collaboration with content owners, including top entertainment companies and established artists (directly). She has unparalleled access to decisionmakers both in entertainment and in technology, which allows for accelerated traction in terms of getting things done for her clients with alacrity. In addition, she seeks brand extension opportunities that will generate additional revenue streams and promotional opportunities for name artists through new means of digital distribution. Prior to launching the All Access Group, Kelli spent 10 years at Apple Computer most recently as Music and Entertainment Markets Manager. She has also done work with Silicon Graphics (SGI) in their Entertainment Marketing group. Kelli previously held positions at EMI Records as an A&R exec, and also at Guitar Player Publications. For several years in the mid-to-late 90s, Kelli partnered with rocker Todd Rundgren to develop a series of firsts during the early days of digital music, most notably PatroNet, the earliest Internet-enabled artist subscription service (see "www.patronet.com"). For the past two decades, she has also been an acclaimed producer of various music projects as well as a wide variety of events including: MB-5, Webnoize Conference, Tribute to Paul McCartney CD, California Music Awards (formerly the BAMMIES), Pollstar Awards, Webby Awards, and other similar projects/events. Kelli also produced a highly successful conference which she co-founded for two years running in 1999 and 2000 entitled "MB-5: The Future of Music", and more recently produced a large fundraiser in 2002 in support of the UN's "Adopt-A-Minefield" organization dedicated to clearing landmines featuring Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson & Jay Leno. She was the talent producer behind the BAMMIES (now known as the California Music Awards) for nearly 20 years. She has also been co-producer of the Pollstar Awards for the past five years. All Access Group's diverse range of clients have included: Philips, Apple Computer, Motorola, iFilm, Akimbo Systems, Media Rights Technologies, Sony Net Services, Wipro, Todd Rundgren, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, IUMA, My-Reputation, Storymail, NBC Interactive, and many others. She's a sought after panel moderator and speaker at digital music and digital media conferences, and a contributor to the media as an expert in the areas of digital music, digital media, artist-related issues, and integrated brand entertainment. She holds an MBA with an emphasis in marketing, and a BA in marketing/filmmaking from San Jose State University. She also holds a Certification in Life Coaching through Debbie Ford’s Institute for Integrative Coaching. In her spare time, she enjoys yoga, gourmet cooking, nutrition, reading, time with friends, and hiking in the local recreational areas of the San Francisco Bay Area.
