In the past year, the YouTube - MySpace - Facebook experience has revolutionized the world of entertainment, information and communications. The world of social communities, once thought to be a thing of the past has exploded and is once again on the front pages of our newspapers and magazines. There are web pages and web experiences for every human nuance and niche. Every family communicates through photo sharing and movie sharing websites. The blogging and social networking worlds have become the new "major media networks." In this session we will explore social media and user generated media as a phenomenon, as a business, as a communications and entertainment platform – as a always-connected lifestyle.

Ziv Navoth, VP, Marketing and Business Development, Bebo: At Bebo, Ziv Navoth is responsible for the creation of an engaging user experience to attract and retain users. Prior to joining Bebo Ziv founded and ran Verve, a boutique management consultancy offering strategic advisory services to leading companies in the US, UK and elsewhere. Verve's client list included Google, Microsoft, BBC, Infospace, RealNetworks, Network Appliance and many others. Before founding Verve, Ziv was Managing Director at Startup Station Plc; a private equity firm he founded and then sold to a UK public company. Ziv was also a co-founder of Tagma, a Logistics consultancy and Automatic For The People, a CD-vending business. Before founding Startup Station, Ziv served as Executive Director at the Institute for Technology and Enterprise, New York's premier Management and Technology research centre. His work at the Institute focused on the disruptive effects new companies have on established businesses. Ziv holds Bachelor's degrees in Psychology and Philosophy from Tel-Aviv University and an MBA in Innovation, Strategy, Information and Technology from the Theseus Institute in France. Ziv is also the author of Nanotales - a collection of short stories.


Stephen McKenna, Vice President, Media & Entertainment Communications, Media, and Entertainment,Hewlett-Packard: Stephen McKenna brings 25-years experience in strategic planning, market analysis, operations management, and mergers and acquisitions to his position of Vice-President, Media & Entertainment in HP’s Communications, Media, and Entertainment business. Prior to joining HP, Mr. McKenna was Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing, for Ascent Media where he was responsible for strategic marketing and product development across the company, collaborating closely with the three major operating groups, Creative Services, Media Management Services and Network Services, as well as the newly formed Digital Services Group to develop targeted, branded, customized applications for the company’s clients. Previously he held executive positions at BBC Technologies in London, a subsidiary formed to capture opportunities from alternative, non-traditional revenue sources. Prior to BBC Technologies, Mr. McKenna worked at Sun Microsystems where he established the company’s Digital Media Universe conference. Mr. McKenna has also held positions at Digital Equipment Corporation, and 3M Corporation.

Stephen Smyth, General Manager, Media, Americas, Reuters: Stephen Smyth is responsible for Reuters Americas consumer business, driving revenue and audience for the online, mobile, interactive TV, digital signage and online syndication services. In addition, Stephen oversees global business development as well as local programming and production, traffic and ad operations in the Americas. Prior to his current role, Stephen led Reuters mobile, video, and digital signage business globally. He was responsible for maximizing revenues and brand value from the company’s presence on these platforms and oversaw relationships with key technology providers and distribution affiliates across the globe. In addition, he headed up Reuters Labs, a public showcase of the latest consumer product innovations from Reuters. Previously, Stephen was responsible for media strategy and business development for Reuters. Before joining the company in January 2003, he was Director of Business Development for Bertelsmann, the media group. At Bertelsmann, Stephen worked for a number of divisions including the RTL Group, Bookspan and the firms E-Commerce Group. Prior to this he co-founded a number of software companies. He received his B.A. and B.A.I. from Trinity College, University of Dublin and his M.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Robin Sloan, Strategist, New Media, CurrentTV: Robin Sloan is Current's new media strategist, responsible for charting the company's course on the web and other platforms. He was part of the small team that launched Current's initial site in 2005 -the world's first open, collaborative TV production studio, and was instrumental in conceiving, designing, and launching the new Current.com in 2007. Prior to joining Current, he was a reporter and producer at the Poynter Institute, a journalism school and think tank. There, he co-produced EPIC 2014 (http://robinsloan.com/epic), a viral video view of the future of media. Sloan has given talks at The Supernova Conference, Yale Law School, The Society for News Design and The Institute for the Future.

Bobby Tulsiani, Analyst, Media and Internet Video, JupiterResearch: As an analyst with JupiterResearch, Bobby Tulsiani focuses on trends in the media industry, especially internet video. He examines marketing, technology and business model issues facing both traditional and new media companies. Bobby's experience includes four years with Deloitte Consulting's Technology, Media & Telecommunications group where he implemented leading consumer strategies and technology systems. After earning his MBA, Bobby worked at AOL as a Senior Product Manager in the AOL Video group, launching products in Video Search, Video Commerce, and Video Gadgets. Bobby holds a BS in Computer Engineering from Texas A&M University and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management. He resides in Manhattan.

Jason Oberfest is Vice President, Business Development for MySpace. Prior to MySpace Jason served as Managing Director of Business Development and Product Management for Los Angeles Times Interactive. In 2006 Jason launched a first phase redesign of latimes.com which led to a 279% increase in monthly page view growth while growing online display ad revenue by 133% and CPC ad revenue by 136%. Following the redesign Jason continued to improve key audience metrics and boost advertising effectiveness by partnering with industry leading startups including Netvibes, Aggregate Knowledge, Eventful and Mixx.com. During his tenure at the LA Times Jason also created the entertainment awards franchise The Envelope (http://theenvelope.com). From 1999-2005 Jason served as Vice President of Strategic Planning at Blast Radius, a product development consultancy. In this role Jason founded the strategic planning division of Blast Radius and led the design and development of media and commerce websites for Sony, Nintendo, Viacom, Warner Music Group, A&E Television Networks and others. Jason worked with AOL from 2002-2005 developing AOL Shopping, AOL Search, AOL.com, and other products. Blast Radius was acquired by the WPP Group in 2007.

Gary Baker, founder and CEO, ClipBlast!: Gary has focused his 20-year career at the intersection of television, interactive media, and the Internet. He previously served as a management consultant for IBM Interactive Media, leading Internet strategy, live webcasts and web application development for clients including Hertz, Toyota, the Grammys, PGA Tour, and CompUSA. Independently, he consulted and provided strategic direction to CinemaNow, Inc., the first website to offer video-on-demand. He also has directed and produced children's television programs, music video and sports programming for the Walt Disney Company, Dick Clark Productions, and ABC. Baker has previously spoken at various media conferences, including the DMA, Digital Hollywood, Digital Coast, CTAM, iHollywood Search and Media, Video on the Net, DEMOFall07 and most recently CES 2008. In public forums, he invariably zeroes in on interactive media, convergence and the bridges connecting creative, technology and entertainment. Founded in 2004, ClipBlast! provides pioneering Web-wide video search that uses patent-pending technology to continuously update the largest index of video content across the Internet. Matt Edelman is the founder and CEO of PeopleJam, a new media company based in Los Angeles, California. Mr Edelman has 14 years’ experience in the entertainment and media industry as a studio executive, producer and entrepreneur. His experience spans motion pictures, television, Internet and mobile platforms. Earlier in his career, Mr Edelman was the Senior Vice President of Marvel Studios and the President of Eruptor Entertainment. Prior to founding PeopleJam, he served as Senior Vice President of Publishing for Mforma Group, the largest privately held mobile entertainment company in the US, where he supervised product design and publication in Europe, the Americas, China and South Korea. Mr Edelman was also the founder of Cusp LLC, a consultancy that extended intellectual property to new media platforms on behalf of major media clients including Marvel Enterprises, Primedia, Activision, Gemstar-TV Guide, Maxim, Nike, Atom Films, Reveille and more. While at Cusp, he developed and produced projects with MTV, UPN and Sci Fi Network.
