Venture Funding, Investment & Mergers - Leadership in the Entertainment & Technology Space: Broadband, Social Networks, Mobile and Games
The VC and Investment community has always led the way in recognizing the newest opportunities in the technology and entertainment space. There are even signs of post-bubble investment and an IPO reversal on the horizon. VC funds are always available for the right idea and in this session, we will focus on the four sectors leading the entertainment and technology space today, social network, broadband, mobile, the DTV/SVOD content and the digital home and technology and games opportunities. Broadband, social networks and mobile have been the Holy Grail for the investment community for the past couple of years - the reality of locking in millions of users. Is there a change coming? Sun Jen Yung, Managing Director, Investment Banking, Oppenheimer & Co. Inc., based in New York, NY. Sun joined Oppenheimer in September 2006 to head the Digital Media and Internet investment banking practice. Sun's experience of over fourteen years in investment banking includes corporate finance coverage of Media (cable and entertainment), Digital Media, Internet and software companies at TD Securities, Deutsche Bank and Lehman Brothers as well as equity research at Lehman Brothers. Over the years Sun has represented a wide range of clients in these sectors encompassing a variety of equity, debt and merger & acquisition transactions including Adelphia Communications, Autobytel, Comcast Corporation, Digital Domain, iVillage, Liquid Audio, Mediaplex, Scientific-Atlanta and TiVo. She also spent two years at TCSI in Berkeley, CA in Business Development and Finance. Sun graduated from Columbia Business School in 1988 with an MBA in Finance and a B.A. in Economics and International Studies from Macalester College in St. Paul, MN in 1984.
Mike Buckley, Director of Strategic Investments, Intel Capital, Intel Corporation: Mr. Buckley is a Director of Strategic Investments for Intel Capital. His responsibilities include equity investing in early stage companies that are strategic to Intels Digital Home, consumer electronics, digital media and service related efforts. Mr. Buckley also contributes to the development of Intels strategies and acquisitions in these areas. Mr. Buckley has been a member of Intel Capital since 1999. Prior to his current investment focus on the digital home, Mr. Buckley also invested in communications components, systems and service companies and directed Intel Capitals efforts related to Internet infrastructure and services. Prior to joining Intel Capital, Mr. Buckley was a Partner and Vice President at Orca Capital Corporation, a Pacific Northwest-based investment banking firm. At Orca, he led the communications and software practices. Mr. Buckley was also an Associate at Jones Lang LaSalle (formerly LaSalle Partners) where he worked as a real estate investment banker and asset manager. Mike received a B.A. in Quantitative Economics from Stanford University.
Dave Goldberg, Entrepreneur in Residence, Benchmark Capital. - Dave Goldberg is an accomplished entrepreneur, an influential music industry executive, and a driving force in the online music industry. He co-founded LAUNCH Media Inc. in 1994, which was dedicated to delivering music and music-related content online, and he led the company through its acquisition by Yahoo! in 2001. Upon joining Yahoo!, Dave served as vice president and general manager of Yahoo! Music, where he led the companys global music operations and built it into the Internets number one music destination. During his tenure, traffic increased from two million to 25 million unique users per month, and 4 billion music videos were streamed in 2006 alone. In addition, LAUNCHcast Radio became the number one Internet radio service, and Dave was named one of Billboard Magazines top power players in digital music. Prior to co-founding LAUNCH, Dave was director of marketing strategy and new business development at Capitol Records in Los Angeles. In that role, he was responsible for the development of new multimedia distribution methods and the creation of alternative channels through which music and new artists could be effectively marketed to consumers. Dave graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and government. He is a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
Mark Stevens, Partner, Fenwick & West: Mr. Stevens represents companies (rang ing from newly formed startup teams to mature public companies), venture capitalists and investment banks involved in the information technology industries, with particular focus on complex transactions. As a lawyer and a business principal, Mr. Stevens has lead teams handling merger, acquisition and divestiture transactions with total announced value in excess of $20 billion. He has directed over 25 initial public offerings of technology companies and hundreds of strategic alliance transactions, ranging from technology and distribution partnerships to multinational joint venture transactions. Gadi Tirosh, General Partner, Jerusalem Venture Partners: With his strong background in media related software and internet based R&D organizations, Gadi is a key member of JVP's media team. His experience has provided him with strong domain expertise in both the consumer infrastructure world and service provider needs. Before joining JVP, Gadi was VP of Product Marketing for NDS (NASDAQ: NNDS), a leader in digital pay-TV systems, supporting some of the largest digital broadcast platforms such as: DIRECTV, BSkyB, CanalDigital and more. At NDS, Gadi defined the product scope and roadmap for NDS established products such as: Conditional access for secure broadcast, Middleware for digital set-tops, and integrated PVR solutions. Previously, Gadi held a variety of positions in software and Internet-based R&D organisations, including Director of Product Marketing at ServiceSoft Corp, a software company providing self-help solutions over the Internet for service organisations.
Gadi holds a BS in Computer Science and Mathematics as well as an Executive MBA from the Hebrew University.
