Embracing the Connected Consumer - Entertainment and Technology - From the Digital Home to the Mobile Universe
The consumer lives in three digital environments, the home, work and mobile experiencing what we might call the always connected, digital lifestyle. In this session, we will address how the technology, the content providers and developers have adapted themselves to the evolving needs of the digital lifestyle, serving a home-based media, a worked based media and mobile media. Whether its a wirelessly connected home with set-tops, PCs, HDTVs and phone devices; a broadband mobile device, a fully loaded media friendly car, a broadband workspace or public space, the consumer is connected all the time, sending or receiving information and content. In this session, we will explore what it means to create and enable that fully connected universe.

Mary Francia, CEO & Managing Director, SeroWires: A global telecommunications executive, Mary Francia is CEO and Managing Director at Serowires, a Consulting firm for Marketing & Technology, supporting clients build marketing and product strategy for next generation services and devices. Ms. Francia last assignment was Vice President Sales & Marketing Home Networks at Royal Philips Electronics where she joined to create a Telecom channel for sales of consumer devices in broadband and wireless entertainment applications. Ms Francia is now retained as Executive Consultant for their Innovation and Emerging Businesses. At Philips Consumer Electronics, she managed Telecom Strategic Alliances and with her direction, Philips launched products and services in access (DSL), communications (VoIP), and entertainment (Music & IPTV) with Telecom Operators over broadband networks as well as initiatives in consumer healthcare and R&D.
Dale (Ty) Roberts, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer, Gracenote: Ty Robe rts is widely recognized as one of the inventors of enhanced CD technology and is accredited with producing the industry's first enhanced CDs. He joined Gracenote in November of 1998 after the company acquired ION, a multimedia and music technology company that he founded in 1993. Roberts serves as Gracenote's chief technology strategist, providing technology direction and overseeing the creation of products and services that leverage the power of the Gracenote database to deliver information services. While at ION, Roberts produced the recording industry's first enhanced audio CD titles, including David Bowie's "Jump" and "Headcandy" from Brian Eno. He was the company's lead technologist and innovator in adding multimedia content to traditional audio CDs. ION was also widely recognized as a leading provider of enhanced CD production tools utilized by recording and multimedia development companies. In September 1993, Bertlesmann Music Group created the first interactive record label after acquiring a 50 percent interest in ION. Prior to founding ION, Roberts was a founder and senior manager of LightSource, a software development company that produced multimedia and graphics editing software. Previously, he was a senior engineer at Pixar, where he created several award-winning, Apple-based music applications including "Studio Session" and "Jam Session." Roberts is Gracenote's representative to the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI), an organization that is chartered with establishing standards for digital music and music playing devices.
David Wertheimer, Executive Director, Entertainment Technology Center @ U SC: David Wertheimer is the Executive Director of the Entertainment Technology Center @ USC. David was the first president of Paramount Digital Entertainment and has been immersed in producing content, developing new technologies, and managing organizations (ranging from start-ups to divisions within publicly traded companies). With his appointment in early 2007 to head the Entertainment Technology Center at the University of Southern California (ETC-USC), Wertheimer has brought his expertise to bear on the technological and implications of providing content to consumers who desire it at any time and any place. Through this consortium, which brings together all the major studios, and several leading technology, CE and service providers, David is helping to evangelize and de-mystify digital content distribution and consumption. ETC's Anytime/Anywhere Content Lab, Anytime/Anwhere Consumer Research, and CxO Roundtables are helping multiple industries collaborate to make sense of content in the Internet age and to encourage consumer adoption of digital media. Wertheimer was previously the president of the Digital Entertainment division of Paramount Pictures; founder and CEO of WireBreak Entertainment, a digital content distribution and television production company; Executive Director of the Institute for Creative Technologies; and held technology and business management positions at Oracle and NeXT. Wertheimer was named one of five entertainment executives to watch by USA Today and one of three individuals leading the next generation of convergence by the Hollywood Reporter.
Scott Smyers, Senior Vice President, Network & Systems Architecture Division, Sony Electronics Inc.: Scott Smyers joined Sony Electronics in 1994, and is now Senior Vice President of the Network and Systems Architecture Division of Sony Electronics Inc. More than 20 years ago, Scott made the jump from academic research to industry, where he has since been very active in the areas of standardization, technology research and product development. Scotts particular area of focus is system architecture, system I/O and interfaces. In the 1990's, he performed pioneering work in the area of IEEE 1394 and standards related to digital transmission (IEC61883). Through his leadership as chairman of the 1394 Trade Association's AV Working Group over the course of seven years, Scott has served a pivotal role in bringing about a suite of standards that define consumer device discovery and control. He also founded and chaired the Digital Transmission Discussion Group which resulted in the so-called "5C" a.k.a "DTCP" copy protection system. Scott has served as CTO and member of the Board of Directors of the 1394 Trade Association, and on the UPnP Steering Committee. He now serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) and President of the DLNA Corporation, as well as Co-Chairman of the Management Committee of the Marlin Developer Community and Director of the Coral Consortium. Scott holds a BA in Physics and Philosophy from Cornell University, class of 1981.
Steve West, Director, North American Strategy, Alcatel-Lucent: Steve West is a Di rector of North American strategy for Alcatel-Lucent and is based in Ottawa, Canada. Mr. West has a lengthy resume of real-world experience in IPTV and video centric service development, marketing and strategy dating back to the early 90s. Mr. West is an Alcatel-Lucent Strategy lead responsible for North American activities related to Alcatel-Lucents multi-screen strategy. Prior to Alcatel-Lucents acquisition of iMagicTV in 2003, Mr. West was Director of Product Management, Media Manager IPTV platform. Prior to iMagicTV, Mr. West was responsible for consumer broadband services development and marketing, including the worlds first commercial launch of a consumer mass market IPTV service at Aliant Telecom, Atlantic Canadas largest telecom service provider. Mr. West holds a Diploma in Marketing and International business from St. Mary's University in Halifax, Nova Scotia and a Diploma in Electronic Engineering Technology from DeVry Institute in Toronto, Ontario.
Steve Johnson, Chief Executive Officer, Choicestream: Steve Johnson is a seasoned executive with a track record of building innovative technologies into successful enterprises. Mr. Johnson started his career by founding Johnson-Grace Company to capitalize on the Internet's unlimited potential for media distribution. The patented compression technology developed by Johnson-Grace and embedded into America Online's client, made fast, easy distribution of images, sound and video a reality for millions of consumers and enabled unprecedented access to content. In 1996, AOL purchased Johnson-Grace and made Mr. Johnson Vice President of AOL's Software and Technology Development division where he brought leading-edge media, telephony and broadcast products to market. In 2000, Mr. Johnson founded ChoiceStream to help consumers navigate through this new era of easy access to virtually infinite choices.
David Pederson is Vice President Corporate Marketing at Zoran Corporation. Prior to joining Zoran in January 2003, he spent over seventeen years at National Semiconductor in various engineering, strategic marketing and management positions including Director Set Top Box product line. Mr. Pederson has over twenty-four years experience in the semiconductor industry including more than six years at Teledyne. He holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Virginia. As a recognized expert in his field, he has been invited to deliver numerous talks on Digital Video, PVRs, Set top boxes, Digital Televisions, the Networked Entertainment Center and the Challenges to Creating a Connected Digital Home and Connected Consumer Products.
Richard Carriere, SVP Americas, Nero: Richard Carriere is Senior Vice President The Americas for Nero, leaders in the digital media industry. His role with Nero includes overseeing sales, marketing, operations, finance and business development teams in the United States, Canada and Latin America and leading them towards the companys goals and targets. Carriere brings more than 20 years of high tech management experience, providing Nero with a holistic view of the digital media landscape and insight into the industrys trends and future. Before joining Nero, Carriere was general manager at Corel Corporation, a publicly-traded application software company based in Ottawa, Canada. Previously, Carriere also served as a consultant at McKinsey & Company, where he was a member of the media and telecommunications practices and was a leader of the firms broadband initiative. Additionally, Carriere has worked for Ernst & Young in Montreal, Canada. Carriere earned an MBA from The Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth College. He also studied at the London Business School, and he graduated from the Université de Montréal with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Carriere is a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
