User Generated Media, Social Networks and Traditional Media: Strategies in Content, Communications and Commerce
In the past year, the YouTube - MySpace experience has revolutionized the world of entertainment, information and communications. The world of social communities, once thought to be a thing of the past has exploded and is once again on the front pages of our newspapers and magazines. There are web pages and web experiences for every human nuance and niche. Every family communicates through photo sharing and movie sharing websites. The blogging and social networking worlds have become the new "major media networks." In this session we will explore user generated media as a phenomenon, as a business and as a communications and entertainment medium.

Venu Vasudevan, Ph.D., Director, Mobile Platforms, Applications Research Center, Motorola Labs, Motorola, Inc.: Venu Vasudevan oversees Mobile Platforms research at Motorola Labs developing next generation platforms and services for Motorola's vision of Seamless Mobility. His team conducts research in media delivery architectures and mobile interactive entertainment. Their work led to Motorola's "Liquid Media" technology and related subsequent "follow-me" media innovations showcased at CTIA, CES and other venues. Venu has over fifteen years of architecture and strategy experience in the telecommunications and enterprise spaces, including past experience as the Database and Network Management Architect on the Iridium satellite communications system. Venu holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Ohio State University.
Kristin L. Holland, Partner, Katten Muchin Rosenman, LLP: Kristin L. Holland helps cli ents resolve business disputes. She maintains a diverse civil trial practice and has significant experience with intellectual property, fiduciary duty and real estate claims. Ms. Holland understands the value of trying to settle differences out of court, and has helped resolve a number of cases before trial, through negotiation and through alternative dispute resolution processes. But when settlement is not possible, Ms. Holland is an effective courtroom advocate. Recent successes include a complete $7.2 Million victory for the plaintiff in a real estate fraud case and a total victory, including a attorneys fees, on a cross-complaint for an investment bank which had been sued by an insurance company. Ms. Holland has also litigated more than 25 entertainment industry disputes, including claims relating to licensing, creative credit, royalty accounting, trademarks, trade secrets and copyrights. These cases have included: Herbert Limited Partnership v. Electronic Arts, re: "Dune;" The Regents of the University of California v. ESPN, Inc. re: "SportsCentury;" Miller v. Rader, et al. re "Waterworld;" River Enterprises v. Universal re "The River Wild;" Man Facing Southeast v. Universal re "K-Pax;" Van Daalen v. Paramount, re "Lucky Numbers;" Gaty v. Universal re a Theme Restaurant at Universal Studios Orlando; and Marketingworks v. Studios USA re "Too Hot for TV" and Studios USA v. Real Entertainment re "Jerry Springer." Ms. Holland graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1992, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with distinction and honors. She graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law in 1996. At UCLA, Ms. Holland was a member of the Moot Court Honors Program and Board and served as Managing Editor of the UCLA Journal of Environmental Law & Policy. Ms. Holland is the Pro Bono Coordinator for the Los Angeles office, is a member of the national Womens Leadership Forum and is active on the recruiting committee. She is on the Board of the Center for Law in the Public Interest. She is also Chair of the Law Firm Advisory Board of the Association of Media and Entertainment Counsel and a former Board member and Co-chair of the Litigation Section of the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles. She has been named a 2006 and 2007 Southern California Super Lawyer "Rising Star" by Los Angeles Magazine and Law & Politics.
Mark Renshaw, Digital Strategist, Leo Burnett/Arc Worldwide: Mark transferre d in May 2006 to Arc Worldwides Chicago office from Singapore, where he directed Arcs digital marketing efforts across Asia-Pacific. As SVP of one-to-one marketing solutions in the US, he will oversee teams in Chicago, New York and San Francisco as they respond to clients increasing needs for digital marketing solutions. Mark has worked in integrated marketing for the last 13 years with a major focus on how to use technology to engage customers and drive business transactions. He has spent most of his time integrating new channels and marketing programs into clients communication plans and overall businesses. While working for Arc in Singapore from 2003 to 2006, he launched integrated campaigns for clients such as General Motors, McDonalds, Procter & Gamble, Diageo, HP, SingTel, Malaysia Airlines, and Tiger Beer. Previously he was with Leo Burnett/Arc in Sydney where he started the interactive team. Originally from Australia, Mark holds a bachelor's of commerce degree in marketing from the University of Western Sydney and a diploma in market research from the Market Research Society of Australia. Mark and his wife, Julie, have two kids, Ethan and Kyle.
John Furrier is the Founder & CEO of PodTech.Network Inc. Since 2001 John has been the CEO of BroadDev (Broadband Developments) a consulting and new ventures business. Before BroadDev, John was the Vice President of the Product Group and Vice President of Strategic Development for RealNames, an Internet search and naming company. From 1996-1999 John was the founder and CEO of Labrador Software paid keyword search and navigation company. John also has experience at large technology companies, having started his career and spent 9 years at Hewlett-Packard in various technical, marketing, and sales roles. John has a BS in Computer Science from Northeastern University and an MBA from Babson College F.W. Olin School of Business.
Reggie Bradford, CEO, ViTrue, Inc.: Reggie Bradford's vision for starting ViTrue beg an with a passion for changing the status quo and empowering consumers with a voice to enable tighter connectivity with their favorite brands. His collective leadership experience spans 16 years across consumer packaged goods, the consumer facing internet and finally television video infrastructure. Most recently, Reggie was President and Board Member of TANDBERG Television. He successfully led an organization of over 400 employees with over $100MM in revenues and led profitable growth of around 40% year over year in his 14 months. He successfully led the integration of 2 acquisitions and led the global repositioning of the recently relaunched brand. Reggie joined TANDBERG as a result of the acquisition of N2 Broadband in February 2005, the leading provider of open-platform solutions for on-demand entertainment, where he was President and CEO since early 2001. Under Reggie's guidance, venture backed N2 Broadband grew annual revenues from less than $1 million to more than $35 million in just under five years. The company, which achieved cash-flow profitability during the same period, boasts a customer roster that includes the world's top 10 cable operators and the world's leading entertainment companies. Reggie was named one of Television Week's 10 to watch for 2005, and under his leadership, the company attained numerous awards, including recognition as a Red Herring top 100 company and CED Magazine recognized the company as one of the top 50 leading Broadband companies for 4 straight years. Reggie has extensive capabilities in building brands and providing customers with a steady, consistent commitment to quality. Prior to joining N2 Broadband, he served as Chief Marketing Officer at WebMD Corp, which during his tenure from 1998 to 2000 grew from 40 to 4,000 employees and received more than $2 billion in funding, while becoming established as one of the world's leading Internet destinations, which is now enjoyed daily by tens of millions of consumers and healthcare professionals. Reggie previously held various management positions with Miller Brewing Company, a subsidiary of Phillip Morris. He earned a BBA in Finance from the University of Georgia and an MBA from Emory University. He and his wife Holly have 4 children.
Shelly Palmer, Managing Partner, Advanced Media Ventures Group LLC, is an award -winning inventor, technologist, composer and television producer. He is the host of Media 3.0 with Shelly Palmer, a weekly business news show that can be seen on public television and online. He invented Enhanced Television (Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Monday Night Football), the most popular form of interactive television in the United States. Mr. Palmer is 1st Vice President of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, NY. He created and chairs the Advanced Media Technology Emmy Awards which honors excellence in the science and technology of the media business. He is the author of one of the most popular television business news blogs. Television Disrupted: The Transition from Network to Networked TV is coming out at NAB on Elsevier Books/Focal Press this spring.
