Reinventing Advertising: Broadcast vs. the New Platforms: VOD, PVR, Broadband & Mobile
In this session, we will attempt to understand the implications of a zero sum game in the analysis of advertising, that is, as the new media platforms expand, gain greater consumer acceptance and loyalty, the impact of broadcast network advertising and its share of revenue are both erode. It may appear to be an obvious notion of give and take, but the power of broadcast vs. the growth of the new media platforms may not be a simple winner-loser relationship. In this complex world of advertising, branding and consumer needs, the role of the advertiser, the media and technology resides a story of never ending saga of the American entertainment and economic enterprise.

Kenneth Papagan, President & Chief Strategy Officer, Rentrak Corporation: Mr. P apagan is responsible for incubating, implementing and driving operations of all new business initiatives and setting the strategic direction of Rentrak Corporation, a leader in audience measurement tracking media consumption across numerous distribution platforms including, Theatrical Film, Home Video, On Demand Content, and Advertising. Ken was a founding executive for the start-up of 9 television networks including Nickelodeon, MTV, ON TV, and the JCPenny Shopping Channel where he was Co-Executive Producer. For the past 10 years, Ken has been primarily focused on Digital Media across all platforms globally working with such clients as AT&T, Broadband, USWest, Bloomberg, Flextech and others. Among his accomplishments at Rentrak are the launches of Retail Essentials and OnDemand Essentials, which is currently aggregating VOD viewer usage data for more than 50% of the VOD, enabled cable universe, including Comcast, Cablevision and others. The service is currently processing overnight On Demand data representing 32 million set top boxes. The service has garnered 42 content providing clients including NBC/Universal, CBS, MTV, Paramount, and Warner Brothers. He is currently developing New Business in On Demand Advertising and Linear Television audience measurement.
Charles Meehan, Vice President of Advertising Sales, Comcast Spotlight: Charles Chip Meehan, vice president of advertising sales for Comcast Spotlight, manages expanded geography ad platforms. These include the Comcast Media Centers Headend in the Sky (HITS) programming distribution platform, a special use footprint-wide sales interconnect, full Comcast Digital Cable footprint and cross-MSO video on demand sponsorship opportunities, and banner ads on Comcasts interactive program guide. Prior to joining Comcast Spotlight in 2004, Meehan was employed by MTV Networks for over 12 years, where he supervised sales activities for Nickelodeon and its various brand extensions for the Los Angeles, Chicago, and Detroit sales offices. Earlier in his career, Chip gained experience in local independent television sales with DTLA, KCOP, and KCAL in Los Angeles. In 1989, he entered the cable industry by joining Adlink. Meehan holds a B.A. in economics from Connecticut College and currently resides in Los Angeles.
Jeff Shultz, Co-Founder, CEO, CONCERT.TV: An innovator in the cable television space, Jeff Shultz was among the first executives to begin forging relationships in the nascent VOD programming industry. In early 2002 he co-founded CONCERT.TV, one of the nations first VOD television properties and the first television network dedicated to music performance and documentary. Shultz oversees distribution, business development and advertising sales for the network, securing deals with partners such as Comcast, Cox Communications, Cingular, Starbucks and Coca-Cola. Shultz began his career as an attorney at Linklaters in London, UK where he specialized in cross-border mergers and acquisitions and hedge fund management. Shultz then changed paths and delved into business development in the emerging digital media space. As director of business development for NBCi, the online arm of NBC television network, Shultz focused on new media entertainment and e-commerce deals for one of the nations leading broadband Internet portals. Shultz graduated from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Political Science, and from Georgetown University Law Center.
LORI H. SCHWARTZ, Senior Vice President, Director of Emerging Media, Inter public Emerging Media Lab: As Senior Vice President and Director of the Interpublic Emerging Media Lab, a center for marketing innovation located in Los Angeles, Lori provides consultation and solution recommendations for the latest in broadband, wireless and emerging media solutions. She has produced a number of broadband solutions for Sony Pictures, Microsoft, GSN, General Motors, Reebok, Nautica and Park Place Entertainment among others. Prior to serving as Director of the Lab, Lori served as the interactive/new media producer at McCann Worldgroup, providing interactive expertise for the agencys Los Angeles client base. She worked with clients to create original content solutions across multiple channels. Lori also facilitated partnerships with entertainment, sports and other content providers, and served as the agency representative on all issues pertaining to emerging media. An active member of the marketing and entertainment industries, Lori has led a project for the American Film Institute's Digital Content Lab and also serves on the Board of Governors for the Producers Guild of Americas New Media Council and has recently joined the foundation board for Women in Film. She is an executive committee member of the Interactive Peer Group for the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences and participates in a number of advanced advertising standardizations groups. When she is not working with clients, Lori can be found on stage in Hollywood performing with a number of improvisational comedy theaters.
Terry S. Bienstock is currently CEO of World Extend: Terry Bienstock is curre ntly CEO of World Extend, LLC. a New Jersey-based distributor of managed application publishing and secure remote access solutions for business and consumer markets. WorldExtend has revolutionary products to deliver to a business a low cost software-based VPN, and has developed a virtual computer on a TV set to bridge the Digital Divide. He also manages and advises other ventures relating to new media platforms, such as Video-on-Demand, digital video recorders, broadband and mobile services. Prior to this, he served as Executive Vice President and General Counsel, Law and Government Affairs, for Comcast Cable Communications in Philadelphia. In this position, he maintained business responsibility for Comcasts Video on Demand platform, Comcast University and claims management. He was also responsible for overseeing the Law department for the countrys leading cable and broadband communications provider, advising senior management on legal and business issues, and for Comcasts state and local government affairs in the 5000 communities and 41 states in which it did business. Prior to joining Comcast, for 23 years Bienstock was in private practice, serving as lead counsel on numerous major communications, First Amendment and property rights cases for most of the top media and cable companies, and lead high visibility cases, from the first fully televised trial in the U.S. to the Noriega tapes case for CNN. He pioneered litigation in the cable television industry for operators, programmers and equipment manufacturers, and successfully prosecuted cases on theft of service, copyright and trademark, premises access, franchising, franchise modifications, transfers, renewals, leased access and other constitutional and Cable Act issues. He has over 100 reported decisions to his name. A graduate of the State University of New York at Binghamton in 1975 and the Rutgers-Camden School of Law in 1978, Bienstock has authored several articles in leading legal publications on cable issues such as theft of service, franchising and access to premises. He regularly lectures at numerous national trade associates and legal conferences on various communications, media, regulatory, law department management and litigation topics, and at business conferences on new media topics.
Lon Otremba, CEO Access 360 Media: Lon serves as Access 360 Media's CEO an d has responsibility for the leadership of the entire organization overseeing the company's management team and portfolio of products and services. A well-known interactive media pioneer, Otremba is a veteran operating executive and advisor in the Internet publishing, print, television and broadcast music industries. He's a frequent commentator on interactive marketing and operating strategies, presenting at such events as the Forbes CFO Conference, The Economist Conference, and numerous Business Week, Internet World, and AdTech Conferences. He has also appeared on CNN and CNBC and served on the executive board of the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB). Most recently, as CEO of Muzak LLC, the worlds largest provider of commercial music services, he rejuvenated the brand, restructured all of their operations and streamlined the organization. Otremba also served as executive vice president of America Online's Interactive Marketing Group, a $720mm+ business responsible for developing and leading the short and long-term strategy and operations for AOL's advertising and e-commerce business turnaround. Many of the initiatives undertaken during his term formed the foundation for AOL's reemergence as an interactive marketing leader. He was also part of the team that launched Mail.com (now EasyLink Services Corporation), helped guide them through an IPO in 1999, and served as president and COO. Before that, he was one of the founding members of the CNET Networks management team, where he was executive vice president, responsible for developing CNET's highly successful revenue model in interactive media and television, and helped position the company for a successful IPO in 1996. Previously, he held various senior executive management positions at Ziff Davis Publishing and CMP Media. He began his career at Procter and Gamble. In addition to sitting on the Board of Directors for Access 360 Media, Otremba currently sits on the board of EEI Communications, a leading provider of outsourced new media, print publishing and staffing services; Cardium Therapeutics, Inc., a publicly traded interventional cardiology company focused on the commercial development of myocardial-derived cardiovascular growth factor therapeutics; and Artes Medical, a vertically integrated medical technology company focused on the development of new and innovative products for the plastic surgery, cosmetic surgery and dermatology markets. He is also a trustee of the Buckley Country Day School.
Dean G. Scheu, Jr. is President & CEO for HSI Communications, Inc.. HSI is a full service advanced media and multimedia consulting firm for National and International Companies. HSI services centers around television and Internet advanced media in the areas of; raising capital, business development, identifying potential acquisitions, brand/marketing & sales strategies, licensing, programming/content development and channel partner agreements. One area that separates HSI form other advanced media consulting companies is its expertise in accelerating revenue and business development opportunities. In January of 1994, Scheu raised capital to form CGC Entertainment, Inc. CGC Entertainment was actively involved in various investment & broadband Internet startups. CGC start-up ventures were both traditional Entertainment & in New Media. CGC leveraged entertainment distribution with advertising opportunities. Some of the companies CGC invested or had a joint venture agreement with were 247/Media, DeFalco West Advertising (billings over 16 million dollars per year), Heavenly Road Productions, CyberNet World Business, and New Media Network (a joint venture with RezN8 and The William Morris Company). In late 1999 Scheu was recruited by Rotor Communications to run their Sales & Marketing Department and was the companys highest paid executive. Rotor was a company backed by DLJ now owned by CSFB. Rotor provided an interactive streaming media solution, iBOSS (interactive broadcast operating system software). Scheu was responsible for the hiring and training the National Sales/New Business Development & Marketing teams. The teams called on Fortune 500 and major Internet companies who were engaged in streaming media. Among Scheus successes, was the launch of the Rotor product with Sony Family Entertainment & TheWB Network (a deal valued at over 2 million dollars). Scheus top success was leading a marketing team that produced over 5 million dollars in revenue (sales and promotion) from a base of zero in less than a year. From Rotor Communications, Scheu accepted a position as an executive for Comcast Communications, Inc in the Spotlight (advertising) Division. Comcast is the largest Cable MSO operator in the United States with over 22 million cable subscribers and over 7 million broadband Internet subscribers. Scheu was responsible for developing and marketing Comcasts digital advertising opportunities in the areas of VOD, Internet and traditional 30 second advertising. Scheu has the distinction of being named a Comcast Spotlight MVP executive for his outstanding achievement in revenue growth for calendar year 2004. After leaving Comcast, Scheu joined Charter Communications in December of 2005 as Director of Business Development for Advanced Media. Charter is the nations 3rd largest MSO. As Director of Business Development Scheu was responsible for all the Advanced Media business development activities; areas of responsibility included VOD, interactive commerce, Internet & marketing strategies together with new interactive programming opportunities. Scheu was also a common Keynote speaker at the various industry conventions and conferences for Charter. Strategic alliances and engagements Scheu has been involved with include: The William Morris Company, 247 Media Group, Inc., Stan Lee Media, Sony Entertainment, Viacom, Universal, Disney, MGM, Paramount, AOL-Time Warner, Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS, all the major Advertising Agencies, major Cable Networks, Cable MSOs, DirecTV, Echostar, Microsoft, Intel, HP, ebay, Yahoo, Google, Talent Agencies and various equipment & software manufactures.
