DRM Implementation in Media and Entertainment: From Standardization to Implementation of New Technology Strategies
Content is what the entertainment and media industry produce, and the viability of the industrys future rests on its ability to manage its content and control its distribution while at the same time making it available to an ever larger customer base. And that is the job of the DRM technology industry, to make the film, music and mobile technology delivery systems safe for mass use. In this session, we will explore, from the point of view of the technology companies, the possibilities and potential of DRM in the evolving content landscape. From CDs and DVDs to broadband and wireless delivery, DRM and content protection represents the bottom line of the future of our industries.

Donald E. Leake, Program Director for Copy Protection Business Development, IBM Research Division: Don Leake brings over 35 years of IBM experience in the IT industry to his current position of program director for copy protection business development, IBM Research Division. Leake is responsible for promoting the use of IBMs extensive portfolio of content protection technologies in IBMs products and industry initiatives as the use of rich digital media becomes pervasive in entertainment and IT applications. IBMs content protection technologies include encryption, watermarking, fingerprinting and software tamper resistance. Leake also works closely with the Media and Entertainment Industry, in its transition to digital, through his participation in standards organizations, consortia, alliances and multi-company working relationships. As such, Leake is currently the lead IBM representative to the 4C group, AACS, the Copy Protection Technical Working Group, Digital Living Network Alliance, the DVD Forum and the Pro-MPEG Forum. Previously, Leake managed the marketing, sales and customer support functions for the group in IBM Microelectronics Division that develops MPEG and set top box chips. In this role, Leake was responsible for establishing IBM leadership in the digital media chip business. Prior to that, Mr. Leake held a number of marketing and product planning management positions in IBMs high-end and mid-range systems development organizations, including managing product planning for IBMs largest commercial servers. Mr. Leake started his IBM career as a customer support rep in the field sales organization. Mr. Leake holds a Batchelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Masters of Science degree in Statistics, both from Penn State University.
Jim Ward, Director of Business Development, Philips Content Identification: Jim Ward has over 20 years experience in Business Development and Sales Management in the entertainment industry. Prior to joining Philips Jim kept a senior position at Snell&Wilcox, a technology provider to the film and television industry. He was involved with projects ranging from virtual telecine, to mastering and repurposing of content. Jim joined Philips Content Identification in May 2006 as Director Business Development North America. Since joining Philips, Jim has been involved with the deployment of their watermarking products for pre-release and digital cinema, as well as Philips MediaHedge video fingerprinting technology.
Shawn Ambwani is a vice president at Intertrust Technologies, Inc., in charge of licen sing and business development. Previously, he was executive vice president at Nextreaming where he managed their platform division. He also co-founded Envivio, which was spun off from France Telecom in 1999 to develop MPEG-4 streaming solutions for the broadcast, cable network, and content developer markets. At France Telecom, he conceived and led international teams in the development of Internet services in France and in the US. He has a Math degree from UCLA and JD/MBA from Boston University. He is a member of the California Bar.
Kristin L. Holland, Partner, Katten Muchin Rosenman, LLP: Kristin L. Holland helps client s resolve business disputes. She maintains a diverse civil trial practice and has significant experience with intellectual property, fiduciary duty and real estate claims. Ms. Holland understands the value of trying to settle differences out of court, and has helped resolve a number of cases before trial, through negotiation and through alternative dispute resolution processes. But when settlement is not possible, Ms. Holland is an effective courtroom advocate. Recent successes include a complete $7.2 Million victory for the plaintiff in a real estate fraud case and a total victory, including a attorneys fees, on a cross-complaint for an investment bank which had been sued by an insurance company. Ms. Holland has also litigated more than 25 entertainment industry disputes, including claims relating to licensing, creative credit, royalty accounting, trademarks, trade secrets and copyrights. These cases have included: Herbert Limited Partnership v. Electronic Arts, re: Dune; The Regents of the University of California v. ESPN, Inc. re: SportsCentury; Miller v. Miramax, et al., Peters v. Disney, et al., and Kellerman v. Miramax, et al. re: "Shakespeare In Love;" Luft v. Miramax, et al. re: "Little Voice;" Aaron Russo, et al. v. Brian Grazer, et al. re "Liar, Liar;" Steven Patrick, et al. v. Eddie Murphy, et al. re "The Nutty Professor;" Worth v. Universal re "Daylight;" Lumsden v. Rader, et al. re "Waterworld;" River Enterprises v. Universal re "The River Wild;" Man Facing Southeast v. Universal re "K-Pax;" Van Daalen v. Paramount, re "Lucky Numbers;" Gaty v. Universal re a Theme Restaurant at Universal Studios Orlando; and Marketingworks v. Studios USA re "Too Hot for TV" and Studios USA v. Real Entertainment re "Jerry Springer." Ms. Holland graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1992, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with distinction and honors. She graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law in 1996. At UCLA, Ms. Holland was a member of the Moot Court Honors Program and Board and served as Managing Editor of the UCLA Journal of Environmental Law & Policy. Ms. Holland is the Pro Bono Coordinator for the Los Angeles office, is a member of the national Womens Leadership Forum and is active on the recruiting committee. She is on the Board of the Center for Law in the Public Interest. She is also Chair of the Law Firm Advisory Board of the Association of Media and Entertainment Counsel and a former Board member and Co-chair of the Litigation Section of the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles. She has been named a 2006 and 2007 Southern California Super Lawyer "Rising Star" by Los Angeles Magazine and Law & Politics.
Steve Oetegenn, Chief Sales and Marketing Officer, Verimatrix: Steve Oete genn's career in the Information Technology industry spans 25 years. He has a wide range of experience in international business, having launched numerous high tech products to the global marketplace. He began his career with Burroughs Corporation (now UNISYS) as a specialist for Optical Character Recognition Systems. He has specialized in Digital Security and Anti-Piracy since 1998, working with government agencies, Fortune 500 companies and major Hollywood studios. Prior to joining Verimatrix, He was COO of MediaSec Technologies LLC, a pioneer and leader in the field of digital watermarking, COO of Argus Systems Group, a leading provider of Internet server security software, and CEO of DCE Communication Ltd, a world wide provider of business messaging systems. Mr. Oetegenn has spoken at numerous global digital security conferences, and also speaks fluent German.
Shawn Michels, Director of Product Management, Entriq: For the past six years, S hawn Michels has been actively developing content security and commerce technologies to enable digital media content owners and service providers to monetize their content through broadband, IPTV, and wireless channels. In his current role as Director of Product Management at Entriq, Mr. Michels is responsible for the worldwide strategy and product development of the Media Control System, Entriq's market leading technology for securing and enabling digital content business models over broadband, mobile and IPTV. In this role, he drives distribution and adoption strategies with members of major studios, music labels, networks and sports leagues while ensuring Entriqs technology is one step ahead of their needs. Mr. Michels' thought leadership in the digital media space has helped establish Entriq as the premier worldwide provider of digital media monetization solutions. Entriq clients include some of the world's largest content, network and service providers in the pay media industry, including Intel, MTV Networks, WWE, NBC Universal, BT Media & Broadcast, UFC, the NBA, CBS, Discovery, NBC Olympics and Major League Baseball. Prior to Entriq, Mr. Michels co-founded ClearKey Solutions, a pioneering startup that developed Digital Rights Management solutions for media companies as well as corporations. While at ClearKey, he directed the custom development and consultation services for BuyMusic.com, the first Windows-based competitor to Apple's iTunes. He started his career in digital media as an Account Manager and Product Manager for DRM Networks, another secure pay-media service provider. Mr. Michels holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign.
