Merrill Brown, Chief Strategist, Press+ (a service of Journalism Online): Merrill Brown is the founder and principal of MMB Media LLC, which provides clients with management and strategy consulting, corporate, editorial and program development, business analysis and marketing services. Since the founding of MMB Media, clients have ranged from companies in the news, information and wireless businesses to a large foundation. Brown serves as Senior Strategist for Press+ (a service of Journalism Online, LLC), an online payment system for new publishers. Brown is also a partner in Propeller LLC, a New York consultancy, and served from 2005 through 2007 as National Editorial Director of News for the 21st Century: Incubators of New Ideas (News 21), part of the Carnegie-Knight Initiative on the Future of Journalism Education. Before establishing MMB Media, Brown served as Senior Vice President, RealNetworks RealOne Services (20022003) and was responsible for all facets of the RealOne programming business including programming, subscription sales, marketing, advertising sales and technology. Prior to that, Brown helped launch MSNBC.com serving as the sites first Editor in Chief, and also served as a Senior Vice President. Before joining MSNBC in 1996, Brown was a media and communications consultant whose work included strategic development work at Time Inc., NBC, US West and a score of other media ventures. Brown was one of the initial strategists responsible for creating the Courtroom Television Network (Court TV) and worked on all facets of the networks operation leading up to its 1991 launch. As senior vice president, corporate and program development, he oversaw program planning, advertising, promotion, marketing, public relations and development of day-to-day management of the cable network through 1994. From 1985 to 1990, Brown was editor in chief of Channels magazine, which was named as a National Magazine Award finalist for general excellence during Brown's tenure. Early in his career, Brown was associated with the Washington Post, the Washington Star, the Winston-Salem Sentinel, and St. Louis Post Dispatch, serving in a variety of editorial capacities. Brown also serves on the boards of Smashing Ideas, Inc., the Center for Citizen Media, New West Publishing, the International Womens Media Foundation, iFocus, the Institute for the Connected Society, Project Agape, and the City University of New York Graduate School of Journalism. Brown is a member of the advisory boards of two advertising firms, Media 6 Degrees and TRA Global, where he recently became Advisory Board Chairman. Brown is an advisor to and has served as Chairman of the Board of NowPublic.com, the leading citizen journalism company in the world. Brown is also an advisor to Evri.com, a content discovery company funded by Vulcan Capital.
Eduardo Hauser, Founder & CEO, DailyMe: Eduardo Hauser is the founder and Chief Executive of DailyMe, Inc., a company focused in developing and deploying news technology. The company is a pioneer in the field of dynamic personalization through the Newstogram platform, a service which currently tracks more than 13 million news consumers for purposes of displaying personalized recommendations and other added value services to news publishers. In 1998, prior to founding DailyMe, Hauser started and became Executive Vice President of America Onlines Latin American division, where he was responsible for the launch and management of AOLs services in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Puerto Rico and the US Hispanic market. In a short period of time, AOL Latin America became the regions largest independent Internet Service Provider. Between 1988 and 1998, Hauser held various positions with the Cisneros Group, including corporate vice-president and vice-president of news for Venevisión; managing director of the Cisneros Groups Corporate Office and assistant to Gustavo Cisneros, the groups chairman & CEO. In addition to his role with DailyMe, Hauser serves on the board of directors for National Public Radio (NPR); the Journalism Committee of the Knight Foundation and the board of visitors for Duke Universitys School of Law. Hauser was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and has spent most of his professional life working with Internet, media, entertainment and telecommunications enterprises in the US and Latin America. He holds a law degree (J.D.) from Caracas' Universidad Católica Andrés Bello (1991), a master's degree (L.L.M.) from Duke University (1993), and pursued international law studies at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (1992) in Belgium.
Guy Vidra is head of business development and emerging media at Wash ington Post Digital, where he is responsible for development across new technology platforms and overseeing strategic partnerships that support editorial and business initiatives across the company. Previous to Washington Post Digital, Guy served as President of 2ergo Americas Inc., directing overall operations for the Americas division (North and Latin) of 2ergo PLC, a publicly traded (LSE: RGO) $80 Million revenue global leader in mobile marketing products and services. Guy oversaw the turnaround of the company within a 12-month period and cemented long-term partnerships for 2ergo by closing cornerstone deals, including AT&T, P&G, and a pan-regional Latin American partnership with Jamba. Before 2ergo, Guy was Senior Vice President of Business Development at Oddcast Inc., a leading Rich Media technology developer. At Oddcast, Guy worked closely with a broad range of companies such as Saatchi & Saatchi, DDB Worldwide, Ogilvy & Mather, Grey Worldwide, Y&R, Viacom, Sony, AOLTW, Vivendi-Universal, Cablevision, Pepsi, Chrysler, Oracle, Toyota and Microsoft. Guy received his MA from The Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy and his BA from The University of Michigan and is originally from New York City. Guy lives in McLean, VA with his wife Sue and two boys, Alexander and Zachary.
Steven L. Canepa, General Manager, Global Media & Entertainment Indu stry, IBM: As General Manager for IBMs Global Media and Entertainment Industry division, Steve Canepa is responsible for leading the world-wide organization to deliver value to clients involved in the business of Entertainment, Broadcast, On-line, Cable, Publishing, Satellite, Sports and Advertising. He directs the groups strategy, marketing, business development, industry solutions and product offerings. Mr. Canepa is a seasoned business executive with over 25 years of experience building, leading and growing profitable businesses. He has been recognized by Digital Media Magazine as one of the most influential executives in Digital Media and has received an EMMY for innovation. Mr. Canepas success comes from his deep understanding of the key business imperatives facing firms in the Media and Entertainment industry as they move to optimize and transform their organizations, operations and business models to sustain excellence and profit in todays highly competitive marketplace. In his role as General Manager, Global Media and Entertainment Industry, Mr. Canepa is responsible for IBMs P&L results for the Media and Entertainment Industry worldwide: Entertainment, Broadcast, On-line, Cable, Publishing, Satellite, Sports, and Advertising customer segments. Since joining IBMs initial global Media and Entertainment industry executive team in 1996, Mr. Canepa has held a number of key leadership positions guiding strategy, solution offerings, marketing, and sales execution. IBMs Media and Entertainment business has grown dramatically and is now the largest services, solution and technology provider to the industry. Mr. Canepa oversees a broad portfolio of services, software and hardware and is responsible for marketing and partnership initiatives. He was also a founder and key leader in shaping IBMs focus on cross-industry Digital Media. Mr. Canepa has a deep understanding of the key marketplace opportunities and challenges facing Media and Entertainment firms and consults extensively with senior executives as they look to optimize and transform their organizations, operations and business models. Richard Gingras, Chief Executive Officer, Salon: Richard Gingras was appo inted Chief Executive Officer in May 2009. Prior to joining Salon, he worked as an advisor to various technology startups and also served as an advisor on media product strategy to the executive team at Google from November 2007 through December 2008. From June 2002 through July 2007 he was founder, CEO and Chairman of Goodmail Systems and continued as Chairman through October 2008. From September 2000 through June 2002, he was an advisor to various technology startups including Audiomill (merged into Real Networks, April 2002), technology incubator ChanceTechAV, web applications platform provider Laszlo Systems, custom book publisher MyPublisher, and broadband applications platform developer Sugar Media. From January 1996 through January 1999, he was the founding Vice President, Programming and Editor-in-Chief of @Home Network and following that company's acquisition of Excite became Senior Vice President and General Manager of Excite@Home's consumer portal division through September 2000. In late 1995 he assembled the seed financing for Salon.com and has served as an informal advisor to the company. From September 1993 to January 1996 he was Group Product Manager, Online Services at Apple Computer. From the spring of 1992 through July 1993 he was Group Product Manager at the Peter Norton Computing division of Symantec Corporation. From September 1987 through May 1993 he was Chief Executive Officer of MediaWorks, Inc. Mr. Gingras holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Boston College.
Shawn Gold, CEO, Cocodot, former CMO, MySpace: Shawn Gold is Chairman of newly formed Social Approach, a digital media advisory focused on Social Discovery platforms and technologies. Formerly, he was CMO , head of marketing & content for MySpace. At MySpace Gold spearheaded the development and implementation of marketing initiatives and campaigns for MySpaces more than 110 million users worldwide. He also oversaw the growth and expansion of popular MySpace franchises including Music, Film, Comedy and MySpace Celebrity, as well as creating MySpaces Impact awards and Our Planet programs to recognize and reward social responsibility. Gold has over 15 years of experience in digital marketing and content strategy, including serving as publisher of WeblogsInc, the largest publisher of professional blogs on the Web (now an AOL company). In 2000 he bacame president and chief strategy officer of Intermix (formerly eUniverse), where his team brought the online entertainment network to profitability, making it the most popular on the Web. Additionally, he headed marketing and communications for WHN, an ecommerce company that provided marketing services to the 2002 Olympics, ABC, NBC, Comedy Central, MTV and Fox. Prior to WHN.com, Shawn served as head of strategic planning at Rare Medium where he created the inaugural interactive communication strategies for P&G, General Foods, Mattel and Nestle. In 1995, Shawn was GM and Founder of Icon New medias Advertising Division, publishing Word.com and Charged.com. There he created the first interstitial ads on the web and an industry-leading advertising system based on time rotation and contextual integration. He started developing interactive content in 1992 as a partner with TouchTunes Interactive, a telecommunications music marketing service in the USA, Japan and New Zealand. He is a founding board member of the Producers Guild of Americas New Media Council and author of The Guide to Laughing at Life book series that promotes wellness through laughter.
