Free versus paid content. Free versus freemium. Micropayment. Turning online content into revenue. Saving the newspaper industry. Subscriptions and premium services. Better technology and platforms will open the door to revenue. Technology has destroyed the information and news business. Technology has saved the economy. There are as many catch phrases to describe today’s focus on monetizing digital content as there are executives in the industry. In this session, we will continue to explore the issues at hand.

Satya Patel, Principal, Silicon Valley, Battery Venture: Satya joined Battery in 2007 and focuses on the Software, Consumer Internet and Digital Media markets. He is on the boards of BlueKai, BrightEdge, ChoiceVendor, Freewheel Media, LiveIntent, and Lotame and is a board observer for Angie's List and Bazaarvoice. Satya’s prior experience spans more than a decade in online media and software, both in operating and investing roles. Before joining Battery, Satya spent several years at Google, most recently as Senior Product Manager for AdSense. Beginning in 2003, he helped to build the AdSense business through various partner development and product management activities. Before Google, Satya was a Senior Product Manager at DoubleClick, leading the company’s efforts in the search marketing business. Satya also worked on various product and operational initiatives for the DART adserving platform, including with both publishers and advertisers/agencies. Earlier in his career, Satya was a Senior Associate at Impact Venture Partners, an early stage venture capital firm based in New York, where he focused on investments in the Internet software, services and media markets. Representative investments include OpenTable and MessageOne. Satya began his venture capital career at Geocapital Partners, a trans-Atlantic technology venture capital firm. Representative investments from Geocapital include Homestore, StepStone and Geneva Technology. Satya also worked for Monitor Company, the strategy consulting firm founded by Michael Porter, as a strategy consultant in its New York and Tel Aviv offices. Satya is the co-inventor of 14 pending patents related to online advertising. He is proud to serve on the board of KIPP Bay Area Schools, a network of seven public charter schools in underserved communities. Satya is a Founding Executive Committee Member of FirstGrowth Venture Network a network of venture and angel investors supporting first and second time entrepreneurs building exciting companies in the New York area. Satya graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a BS in Finance from the Wharton School and a BA in Psychology from the College of Arts & Sciences.

John McCarus, Vice President, Group Development Director, The
Third Act: John leads the development of original and partnered digital brand content offerings across Digitas teams, working in partnership with creative, media, and marketing leads. John is responsible for content strategy development, sourcing digital content creator partnerships, and crafting digital brand content offerings. Prior to joining Digitas, John served as Vice President of Brand Development for Alliance.












Richard Gingras, Chief Executive Officer, Salon: Richard Gingras was appointed Chief Executive Officer in May 2009. Prior to joining Salon, he worked as an advisor to various technology startups and also served as an advisor on media product strategy to the executive team at Google from November 2007 through December 2008. From June 2002 through July 2007 he was founder, CEO and Chairman of Goodmail Systems and continued as Chairman through October 2008. From September 2000 through June 2002, he was an advisor to various technology startups including Audiomill (merged into Real Networks, April 2002), technology incubator ChanceTechAV, web applications platform provider Laszlo Systems, custom book publisher MyPublisher, and broadband applications platform developer Sugar Media. From January 1996 through January 1999, he was the founding Vice President, Programming and Editor-in-Chief of @Home Network and following that company's acquisition of Excite became Senior Vice President and General Manager of Excite@Home's consumer portal division through September 2000. In late 1995 he assembled the seed financing for Salon.com and has served as an informal advisor to the company. From September 1993 to January 1996 he was Group Product Manager, Online Services at Apple Computer. From the spring of 1992 through July 1993 he was Group Product Manager at the Peter Norton Computing division of Symantec Corporation. From September 1987 through May 1993 he was Chief Executive Officer of MediaWorks, Inc. Mr. Gingras holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Boston College.

Shawn Gold, CEO, Cocodot, former CMO, MySpace: Shawn Gold is Chairman of newly formed Social Approach, a digital media advisory focused on Social Discovery platforms and technologies. Formerly, he was CMO , head of marketing & content for MySpace. At MySpace Gold spearheaded the development and implementation of marketing initiatives and campaigns for MySpace’s more than 110 million users worldwide. He also oversaw the growth and expansion of popular MySpace franchises including Music, Film, Comedy and MySpace Celebrity, as well as creating MySpace’s “Impact awards” and “Our Planet” programs to recognize and reward social responsibility. Gold has over 15 years of experience in digital marketing and content strategy, including serving as publisher of WeblogsInc, the largest publisher of professional blogs on the Web (now an AOL company). In 2000 he bacame president and chief strategy officer of Intermix (formerly eUniverse), where his team brought the online entertainment network to profitability, making it the most popular on the Web. Additionally, he headed marketing and communications for WHN, an ecommerce company that provided marketing services to the 2002 Olympics, ABC, NBC, Comedy Central, MTV and Fox. Prior to WHN.com, Shawn served as head of strategic planning at Rare Medium where he created the inaugural interactive communication strategies for P&G, General Foods, Mattel and Nestle. In 1995, Shawn was GM and Founder of Icon New media’s Advertising Division, publishing Word.com and Charged.com. There he created the first interstitial ads on the web and an industry-leading advertising system based on time rotation and contextual integration. He started developing interactive content in 1992 as a partner with TouchTunes Interactive, a telecommunications music marketing service in the USA, Japan and New Zealand. He is a founding board member of the Producers Guild of America’s New Media Council and author of The Guide to Laughing at Life book series that promotes wellness through laughter.

Eduardo Hauser, Founder & CEO, DailyMe: Eduardo Hauser is the founder and
Chief Executive of DailyMe, Inc., a company focused in developing and deploying news technology. The company is a pioneer in the field of dynamic personalization through the Newstogram platform, a service which currently tracks more than 13 million news consumers for purposes of displaying personalized recommendations and other added value services to news publishers. In 1998, prior to founding DailyMe, Hauser started and became Executive Vice President of America Online’s Latin American division, where he was responsible for the launch and management of AOL’s services in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Puerto Rico and the US Hispanic market. In a short period of time, AOL Latin America became the region’s largest independent Internet Service Provider. Between 1988 and 1998, Hauser held various positions with the Cisneros Group, including corporate vice-president and vice-president of news for Venevisión; managing director of the Cisneros Group’s Corporate Office and assistant to Gustavo Cisneros, the group’s chairman & CEO. In addition to his role with DailyMe, Hauser serves on the board of directors for National Public Radio (NPR); the Journalism Committee of the Knight Foundation and the board of visitors for Duke University’s School of Law. Hauser was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and has spent most of his professional life working with Internet, media, entertainment and telecommunications enterprises in the US and Latin America. He holds a law degree (J.D.) from Caracas' Universidad Católica Andrés Bello (1991), a master's degree (L.L.M.) from Duke University (1993), and pursued international law studies at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (1992) in Belgium.

Angelique Shelton, VP, Content and Product Developm
ent, Wikia: Angelique Shelton is the Vice President of Product and Content Development at Wikia.com, where millions of pop-culture buffs collaborate to create the ultimate content destination on their favorite film franchises, TV series, bands, celebrities, anime, and comics. Wikia is now the 70th largest website according to Quantcast reaching over 30 million monthly unique visitors. Angelique oversees the continued growth and success of Wikia's 100,000+ fan enthusiast communities who have created a whopping three million pages of content. Before joining Wikia, Angelique worked at Microsoft in the Home and Entertainment Division where she was responsible for licensing and distribution partnerships for Microsoft's Xbox and PC Game franchises. Angelique holds an M.B.A. from Stanford Graduate School of Business and a B.A in Finance from Louisiana State University.









Eric Mark, Principal, Deloitte Consulting LLP: Mr. Mark is a Principal in Deloitte Consulting's Media & Entertainment Strategy practice. He works with traditional and emerging media and entertainment companies on corporate- and competitive-strategy issues, ranging from new businesses, new products, and new services, as well as mergers and acquisitions, to industry and competitor analyses, and scenario envisioning. Mr. Mark has worked with all of the major movie studios and music companies, and many related businesses, such as post-production houses, broadcast and cable networks, and digital-distribution companies. With a strong background in media and entertainment, telecommunications, retail, hospitality and leisure, and consumer and packaged goods, he has more than 15 years of experience and has led numerous successful engagements, including developing the business plan for a leading purveyor of online music, conceptualizing the vision and organization structure for the licensing division of a major cable network, and developing the customer strategy for a global entertainment retailer. Mr. Mark has a significant market presence as a thought leader in media & entertainment and corporate strategy. He is a frequent speaker and panelist at industry conferences and colloquia, including NAB, CES, Digital Hollywood, the National Association of Recording Merchandisers, and the Wharton and NYU Media Conferences. Prior to joining Deloitte Consulting, Mr. Mark was an Associate Partner in the Media & Entertainment Strategy practice at IBM Global Business Services (formerly PwC Consulting), and, before that, he was a Manager at A.T. Kearney. Mr. Mark earned a Bachelor of Mathematics in computer science (with a minor in drama) from the University of Waterloo, and he holds an MBA in strategic management & marketing from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, as well as a Master of Arts in international studies (with concentrations in Western Europe and French) from The Lauder Institute of the University of Pennsylvania. Eric is also a graduate of the Second City Conservatory and Writing programs. A native of Toronto and erstwhile denizen of Paris, he currently resides in Marina del Rey, California, and enjoys unconventional people, irony, and watching lots of movies in theatres.
