Mark Mangiola joined Canaan in 2001 after over 20 years in operational leadership roles in the cable and broadband industry. Mark invests in communications companies that are transforming the delivery of digital media, as well as new consumer content companies that meld entertainment with interactivity. Mark has a visionary outlook about how consumers will watch and interact with content in the future, having participated first hand in the early emergence of both cable TV and the Internet. He also supports key clean tech opportunities. Mark actively participated in Canaans investment in Ellacoya (acquired by Arbor Networks), a rapidly-growing broadband service optimization company. A super-connected industry veteran, Mark leverages his network to fill key executive positions at Canaans portfolio firms and helps them spearhead strategic relationships with industry-leading corporations. Prior to Canaan, Mark served as CEO of @Home Solutions, a division of Excite@Home. He was previously the President and CEO of Positive Communications and an Executive VP at KBLCOM/Time Warner. When Mark is not thinking about how consumer-generated video will change the world, he is sprinting around a track. A passionate athlete, Mark coaches high-school and college track athletes and never misses a Meet of Champions track meet.
Jim Armstrong, Managing Director, Clearstone Venture Partners: A successful and experienced early stage venture investor across a variety of enterprise and consumer facing technology companies, Jim has established himself as a leading investor based in Southern California. Since joining Clearstone early in its formation, Jim has applied his experience and industry contacts to help Clearstone companies deliver a strong record of venture performance. Jim's work at Clearstone is focused on information technology investments, with particular interest in consumer internet, application software and internet enabled business processes. Jim has been recognized as one of the top 50 Venture Capitalists in the United States by Forbes Magazine. Jim joined Clearstone Venture Partners in 1998 from Austin Ventures, a leading venture fund, where he spent three years supporting investments in a variety of early stage companies. Jim also worked with idealab, the incubator, in the late 90s, helping to guide and fund a variety of early Internet companies. Jim led Clearstones current investments in Internet companies SupplyFrame, Internet Brands (NASDAQ: INET), Vast, Six Degrees Games, and LeisureLink, as well as in Enterprise Software companies Integrien and Composite. Jim actively represented Clearstone's early stage investments in former portfolio companies Comet Systems (acquired by Miva), PayPal (acquired by eBay as a public company), United Online (NASDAQ: UNTD), Jump Networks (acquired by Microsoft) and TriVida (acquired by BeFree). Jim holds a BA in Economics from the University of California at Los Angeles and also holds an MBA from the McCombs School at the University of Texas at Austin. Mark J. Kapczynski, Chief Operating Officer, Kontrol Media: Mark Kapczynski has a successful track record as a serial entrepreneur, chief executive and media industry expert. His current venture, Kontrol Media Corp., is an idea incubator for startups and senior professionals in the media and technology markets including Web 2.0, mobile, and television. Prior to that, he was founder and CEO of MESoft, a media and entertainment software company, for which Kapczynski raised two rounds of seed and venture capital funding exceeding $8MM. Under his leadership, the company also grew its distribution to a global level and partnered with leading IT companies, such as IBM, Sun and AMD, and media companies that include Avid, Ascent Media and Sony. Additionally, he received a patent for a digital media workflow process. From 1995 to 2002, Kapczynski worked at Microsoft Corporation as their Director of Worldwide Media & Entertainment Solutions Group. During that time, he worked with numerous digital media and internet start-ups such as Homestore (now Move.com), Movielink, and MeTV. Mark Kapczynski got his first taste at being an entrepreneur in 1993 when he founded Digital Genesis-a pioneer in the internet/e-commerce space-which was sold to publicly-traded Netgateway, Inc. (NGWY, now IIG) three years later. Mr. Kapczynski graduated from UCLA film school and continues to be active in multiple industry associations that span media, mobile telecom, technology, and Internet Web 2.0. In his free time, Mr. Kapczynski enjoys car racing and playing the drums.
