Track III: The Broadband Economy: Video, Communications, Personalization, Social Media, Content, Lifestyle and Advertising Ecosystem In this session we will address the relationship of lifestyle communications, content, advertising and commerce across the Broadband platforms - social media, full entertainment experiences, UGM, search, mobile video and P2P. A revolution in personal communications, advertising and commerce is on its way, and the fully interactive and immersion broadband platforms including social media and gateway concepts such as search are proving to be the most inherently targeted vehicles for interacting with the consumer. We are at the first stages of not only understanding how the technology is impacting the consumer, we are likewise at the first stages of what the technology looks like and how it will function. Advertising and commerce in cutting edge broadband and mobile is our future and in this session, we hope to set a baseline for future exploration. Josette Bonte, Chief Digital Media Strategist, Cisco IBSG: Bonte is a digital media and filmed entertainment expert. She spent the first 11 years of her career as film and television industry executive in Hollywood and the past 14 years in the fields of telecom, interactive television, broadband content and online games. Josette joins Cisco from Cookie Jar Entertainment, the producers of the acclaimed Kids TV series: Arthur, Caillou, Zaboomafoo, The Doodlebops, etc., where she was the VP of Digital Media. As such, her responsibilities included negotiating distribution agreements with all the new media platforms (telco VOD, IPTV, broadband and mobile) in the domestic and international markets. She previously served as Ovums Vice President of Content and IPTV, working on IPTV deployment strategies with service provider clients like AT&T, France Telecom and BT. Besides her consulting experience while at Ovum and earlier at RHK, Josette has also worked as Chief Content Advisor to the PanAmSat Net 36 Team; where she concentrated on broadband content strategy and customer acquisition. Bonte is also a telco TV pioneer: In 1994, she joined then US West (now Qwest) as Head of Strategic Marketing, Entertainment and Interactive Services, where she participated in the companys early interactive media and VoD trials and soon became the companys Liason with the Hollywood entertainment industry for content strategy. In the eighties, Josette served as Executive Director of Unifrance Film, where she represented the French motion picture and television industries in Hollywood. She subsequently founded EuroScreen Partners, a film production and distribution company capitalized by European cable operators and banks. Josette received an M.F.A from the UCLA School of Film and Television in 1981 and a Ph.D. in Telecommunications and New Media from the Sorbonne in 1996. She is also the author of a best-selling book published by French publisher PUF in 1995 entitled La Television a la Carte aux Etats-Unis.
Mark Ugar, Senior Director Specialist Sales, Microsoft: A veteran in the online ad industry, Ugar has spent 9 years at MSFT working with product and sales teams to deliver results for advertisers. Coming to MSFT as part of the CompareNet acquisition, Ugar helped pioneer online comparison shopping and holds a MSFT patent for Normalized Rotation on a Web Site of Display Items from Multiple Sources. After growing the shopping business to over 100 million in annual revenue, he went on to run the Vertical sales teams and lead the growth of a 95 person business exceeding 300m in revenue focused on vertical solutions for Retail, Auto, Financial Services, Entertainment, Sports and Entertainment. He then went to work managing the revenue strategy and implementation of MSFTs large complex syndication deals. Focused on Social Media, Ugar drove implementation of deals across the globe. Successfully launching ad syndication in 14 countries. In his latest role, Ugar is focused on integrating our major brands (MSN, WL, MSNBC, Fox) into the network rhythm of selling and providing creative solutions for marketers across the breadth and depth of MSFT media assets. He lives in San Francisco with his wife and 2 young children. All avid SF Giants fans.
Paul Greenberg, Executive Vice President and General Manager TV Guide Online: Paul Greenberg joined TV Guide Online in 2006. He is responsible for the leadership, strategic development and day-to-day management of TV Guide Online (TVGuide.com, TVShowsOnDVD.com, JumpTheShark.com, FansOfRealityTV.com and TV-Now.com), including ad sales, product development, technology, editorial, marketing, syndication, finance and design. During his time in this role, the company has dramatically increased site usage and introduced multiple new products. In the last two years, TV Guide Online has grown from 3.5 million unique visitors per month to 15 million, growth of more than 400 percent during Mr. Greenbergs tenure. In addition, the company has launched many new products, including the Online Video Guide, a best-in-class video search engine for professional web video content; and unique syndication widgets that allow partners to embed all of TV Guide Onlines content and products on their own sites. Previously, he was at MusicNet (now MediaNet), a leading online music provider, where he served as senior vice president, Global Business Development and Partner Relations. In this role, Mr. Greenberg was responsible for negotiating and closing new partnership deals, including recent agreements with MTV, Yahoo!, and Virgin. He managed the Partner Relations department, leading the strategic and operational implementation of the MusicNet service for distributors. He also led the Marketing, Public Relations and International groups. Prior to joining MusicNet, Mr. Greenberg worked at MTV Networks as vice president, Business Operations for MTV.com, where he developed new content revenue streams, managed integration of major online operating divisions and helped double site revenue and traffic in one year. Mr. Greenberg was also vice president, new business development at the MTVi Group, responsible for developing and executing strategy and partnerships as well as content syndication. Prior to working at MTV Networks, Mr. Greenberg was a sports announcer on 1010 WINS Radio in New York City. Mr. Greenberg holds a Bachelors degree from Columbia College and a Master of Business Administration from Columbia Business School.
Martin Green, COO, Meebo: Martin Green runs Meebo's business activities, including business development, marketing and revenue generation. Prior to Meebo Martin spent 10 years at CNET Networks in a variety of strategic, financial and general management roles, and was a member of the company's executive committee. He launched performance ad programs for CNET's tech clients which delivered over $100 million in annual revenues, led the development of CNET's in-house ad server, inventory management, business planning and forecasting functions and led several acquisitions to expand the company's reach and revenue capacity. Before CNET, Martin was an analyst in Morgan Stanley's investment banking group, both in New York and Menlo Park. He grew up in England and Canada and lives in San Francisco with his wife and two children.
Michael Levy, Chairman and CEO, OPEN Sports: Mike Levy is the founder and CEO of OPENSports.com, a next-generation sports web site that redefines the sports fans online experience. OPEN Sports is a comprehensive platform of products and services that offer breaking sports news, social media tools, user generated content and fantasy sports applications. Prior to launching OPEN Sports, Mr. Levy was the founder and former CEO of SportsLine.com, Inc., a leading Internet sports media company and publisher of CBS SportsLine.com, NFL.com, PGA Tour.com and NCAA Sports.com. Mr. Levy founded the company in February, 1994. SportsLine was listed on NASDAQ from November, 1997 through December, 2004 when it was acquired by CBS. At SportsLine, Mr. Levy forged alliances with CBS Sports, AOL, the NFL, the NBA, MLB, the PGA Tour, the NCAA, various players associations and many superstar athletes including Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, Shaquille ONeal, Joe Namath, John Elway, Jerry Rice, Mike Schmidt and Wayne Gretzky. SportsLines initial venture funding was through Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield and Byers. Subsequent private investors included Reuters, TCI, US West and NY Life. Mr. Levy took SportsLine public in 1997 raising $32 million. In 1998, SportsLine raised $150 million in a secondary offering and in 1999 raised $150 million in a convertible bond offering. During the Internet boom years from 1998 to early 2000, SportsLines market cap routinely exceeded $1 billion. In 1998, Mr. Levy was featured in a Forbes cover story with several other early internet company founders. He was also the subject of numerous articles in Fortune, Business Week and Forbes, was a frequent guest on CNBC, Bloomberg and CNN, and an invited speaker at important Internet and media conferences. From 1978 through 1993, Mr. Levy was CEO of Lexicon Corporation, a company he co-founded to develop and market the worlds first electronic language translator. Under Levy, Lexicon went on to develop data communications terminals for the Department of Defense and Fortune 500 clients, and financial transaction terminals for major credit card issuers, banks and large retailers. Sports-Tech International, Inc., a Lexicon subsidiary developed the video analysis systems which were used by a majority of NFL and NBA teams, and over 150 collegiate sports programs. From 1969 through 1977 Mr. Levy held engineering design and management positions with Racal Datacom and Harris Corporation. Mr. Levy holds six patents for innovative high-tech products and received his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree from Georgia Tech in 1969. Mr. Levy was selected as one of The Sporting News 100 most powerful people in sports for three consecutive years (1999-2001). In 1999, he was given the Annual Achievement in Technology and New Media Award by UJA Federation of New York. In 1998, Mr. Levy was inducted by Georgia Techs College of Engineering into the Academy of Distinguished Alumni. In 1997, Mr. Levy received the Florida Entrepreneur of the Year Award sponsored by Ernst & Young and the 1997 Interactive Entrepreneur Award by the Interactive Services Association.
David Siemer is the founder of Siemer & Associates, Inc., a firm specializing in online media and technology Investment Banking. Siemer was previously with Montgomery & Co. where he served as a key member of the Digital Media Investment Banking Group. At Montgomery, Siemer led sales to major media companies such as News Corp, Sony, Hearst, Viacom, and Disney, and managed private investments from tier one venture capital and hedge fund firms. Prior to his work with Montgomery, Siemer spent eight years at Desco Corporation. In 1997, Siemer joined Desco Capital Partners, the venture capital arm, where he analyzed early stage software, online media, and biotech opportunities. Investments made during his tenure included Total Control Products, sold to GE; Conquest Communications, sold to SmarTalk (now a division of AT&T); Enact Software, sold to Sage SalesLogix. In 2000, Siemer duties were expanded to Desco Corporation's business development group, where he participated in and led several acquisitions, including MDT Software, Emergitech, Medical Indicators, Inc., Tek-Air Systems, Alnor Sensors, and Diversified Electronics. In 2003, Siemer was appointed to Director of Operations of Marsh Bellofram Instrumentation with the oversight of 110 employees. In this role, Siemer successfully launched Desco's first Chinese manufacturing facility and opened foreign sales offices in the United Kingdom and India. Siemer received his MBA in Finance and Economics from the University Of Chicago Graduate School Of Business, graduating with high honors. He completed his undergraduate work at Lehigh University with degrees in Management Information Systems and Accounting.
Shawn Gold, Partner, SocialApproach, former CMO, MySpace: Shawn Gold is Chairman of newly formed Social Approach, a digital media advisory focused on Social Discovery platforms and technologies. Formerly, he was CMO , head of marketing & content for MySpace. At MySpace Gold spearheaded the development and implementation of marketing initiatives and campaigns for MySpaces more than 110 million users worldwide. He also oversaw the growth and expansion of popular MySpace franchises including Music, Film, Comedy and MySpace Celebrity, as well as creating MySpaces Impact awards and Our Planet programs to recognize and reward social responsibility. Gold has over 15 years of experience in digital marketing and content strategy, including serving as publisher of WeblogsInc, the largest publisher of professional blogs on the Web (now an AOL company). In 2000 he bacame president and chief strategy officer of Intermix (formerly eUniverse), where his team brought the online entertainment network to profitability, making it the most popular on the Web. Additionally, he headed marketing and communications for WHN, an ecommerce company that provided marketing services to the 2002 Olympics, ABC, NBC, Comedy Central, MTV and Fox. Prior to WHN.com, Shawn served as head of strategic planning at Rare Medium where he created the inaugural interactive communication strategies for P&G, General Foods, Mattel and Nestle. In 1995, Shawn was GM and Founder of Icon New medias Advertising Division, publishing Word.com and Charged.com. There he created the first interstitial ads on the web and an industry-leading advertising system based on time rotation and contextual integration. He started developing interactive content in 1992 as a partner with TouchTunes Interactive, a telecommunications music marketing service in the USA, Japan and New Zealand. He is a founding board member of the Producers Guild of Americas New Media Council and author of The Guide to Laughing at Life book series that promotes wellness through laughter.
