Track I - DH14 - Digital Hollywood The Television, the PC, Online Video and the Digital Consumer Experience The combination of the TV, the set-top, the broadband connection and digital video recorder is breaking down the barriers of TV viewing experience. Every player in the entertainment and technology food chain from content owner to middleware and headend operator, to the subscriber service provider and finally to the CE manufacturer, all play an equally key role. The idea that consumers might use a TV, demanding personal and enhanced video services, as they do a computer has arrived and it is our job to make the future happen today. In the near future, viewers might be watching a football game and at the same time, on a second window on the TV, that viewer might also be shopping for tank-tops or buying snacks from the supermarket. That viewer might be taping a show, watching a movie and doing research for a term paper on the web at the same time. The TV set will serve as gateway to entertainment and information as sure as the computer opens the door to a world of information. TV, interactive TV, IPTV, PVR TV, broadband based TV, there will likely be as many ways to describe the way consumers will use and access content and programming as there are companies supplying the options. Chris Hock, Senior Vice President, Product Management, BlackArrow: Chris Hock is an experienced technology professional in the field of multiplatform media distribution. Previously group product manager for the Dynamic Media Organization at Adobe Systems, Hock managed the Flash video delivery business and led the creation and launch of various media-delivery related products and services including Flash Media Server, Flash Media Encoder and the Flash Video Streaming Service. Hock joined Adobe in 2005 through the acquisition of Macromedia. Prior to his work with Macromedia, Hock co-founded RedSpark, Inc., an Autodesk venture that developed hosted enterprise collaboration solutions. He also spent eight years with Autodesk in senior product management and sales engineer roles. Hock was named one of the "Top 40 IPTV Movers and Shakers of 2007" by DailyIPTV and one of 25 2008 Streaming Media All-Stars by Streaming Media Magazine, and is a frequent public speaker at industry conferences.
Richard Carriere, President-Americas, Nero, Inc: Richard Carriere is the president of Nero, Inc., the creator of liquid media technology. His role with Nero, Inc. includes overseeing sales, marketing, operations, finance and business development teams in the United States, Canada and Latin America and leading them towards the companys goals and targets. Carriere brings more than 20 years of high tech management experience, providing Nero with a holistic view of the digital media landscape and insight into the industrys trends and future. Before joining Nero, Carriere was general manager at Corel Corporation, a publicly-traded application software company based in Ottawa, Canada. During his tenure, he drove significant impact by repositioning the companys productivity software business line. Previously, Carriere also served as a consultant at McKinsey & Company, where he was a member of the media and telecommunications practices and was a leader of the firms broadband initiative. Additionally, Carriere has worked for Ernst & Young in Montreal, Canada. Carriere earned an MBA from The Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth College. He also studied at the London Business School, and he graduated from the Université de Montréal with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. Carriere is a member of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
Jay Fehnel, Vice President, TMS Entertainment Products: Jay Fehnel leads Tribune Media Services Entertainment Products division, an international leader in entertainment navigation. The division creates rich databases of television, movie and celebrity information used by thousands of media companies worldwide, as well as in TMS' own products for the print, online and interactive program guide (IPG) markets. The division also operates Zap2it.com, one of America's most popular entertainment Web sites, provides publishing and marketing services for cable and satellite operators and sells advertising for over 100 newspaper TV supplements. Fehnel previously served as Vice President, Business Development. In that role he led the companys strategic planning process and identified growth opportunities for TMS, including internal start-ups, partnerships, acquisitions and investments. Fehnel has played key roles in TMS acquisition of five companies and in the launch of five new businesses. He is a member of the board of directors of YellowBrix, Inc., of Alexandria, Virginia, a provider of filtered news services for corporate users. Fehnel previously worked in research and marketing for the NBC TV Stations group, Katz Television and Walt Disney Company. He is a graduate of the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and Purdue University.
Jonathan Heller, co-founder/Co-CEO, FreeWheel: With more than 10 years of experience in the online advertising arena, Jon knows every detail of how media businesses and ad networks operate. His experience includes six years as the Operating Officer of the DoubleClick Media Network, the largest brand advertising network in the world, followed by positions as COO/CFO of Visible World and VP/General Manager at Yahoo!. These roles allowed Jon to master the art and science of making online advertising work at scale. He has specialized throughout his career in everything from operations to new market development to acquisition assessment. Jon received his MBA from the University of Chicago and his B.S.E from the Wharton School.
Mugs Buckley, Senior Analyst, TDG: Mugs Buckley is a a Senior Analyst for TDG and a new media consultant specializing in advertising and audience development development strategies. Formerly, she served as an Interactive Sales Manager for Comcast Spotlight, a division of Comcast Corporation. She began her career at the Discovery Channel where she was the Executive Producer of Discovery's award-winning multimedia production unit. As ZDTV's (now G4) first employee, she was Director of Business Development. She served as the Vice President of Business Development for RespondTV and the Director of Business Development and PopTV for Liberate Technologies. Mugs is an active member of the Producers Guild of America's New Media Group and a member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences' Interactive Media Committee (Primetime Emmys). Mugs holds a BA from Tufts University and an Ed.M. in Technology in Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
David Jensen, Managing Partner for Digital Media, IBM: David Jensens experience in the delivery of digital media, entertainment and information has made him a leading member of many industries. He has been on the forefront of digital media development and distribution for more than a decade inventing, producing and marketing broadband, video-on-demand, interactive television, Internet-based entertainment and social networking destinations. Currently as Managing Partner for Digital Media at IBM, he is helping to bring a new generation of Digital Production and Workflow solutions to market for a range of vertical markets that are distributing content through digital media. He joined IBM from Ericsson / Tandberg Television where he was a member of the Broadband Television management team through the acquisition of Zetools, the company that he was a founding member of and led business development, sales and marketing. David has also received numerous awards and industry recognition. He is a two-time Emmy award winning Producer, Creator and Entrepreneur. He was elected to the PGA/Hollywood Reporter Digital 50 in 2006 and has been nominated seven times, winning two Primetime Emmys for Outstanding Achievement in Interactive Television in 2004 and 2005. He was elected in 2007 to a 2-year term as Governor of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, representing Interactive Media. Trained as an architect and media-maker, David began his career as a designer with world-renowned architectural firms Richard Meier and Partners and Zaha Hadid. He went to apply those his architectural / media training to produce and design films, music videos, interactive media and television for HBO, MTV, Alive Pictures/Universal, PBS, Fox and among others. In the digital consulting world, David led Razorfishs Broadband Future TV practice whose clients included Sony, Disney, HBO, Columbia Tri-star, Broadband Interactive Group, TiVo, I-Blast, News Corp, Fox, RAI Click, Telemundo and Universal Music Group among others. In the technology research world, he built interactive social networking destinations and pioneered projects that connected community with artistic development for the J Paul Getty Trust, He holds a M. Arch. from Harvard University and a B. Sc. from the University of Houston.
Steve McKay, CEO, Entone: Steve has focused his career on broadband multimedia services for the communications industry for nearly twenty years. Prior to joining Entone, Steve was the CEO of Ion Global, a pan-Asian systems integrator. Under his direction, Ion Global grew from 50 people in 1 country to over 1000 people in 10 countries. As part of a merger, the company went public on NASDAQ and later completed a $400M+ secondary offering. Steve also spent more than 12 years with Accenture (formerly Andersen Consulting). While at Accenture, Steve worked with some of the world's leading CATV operators and telcos on their broadband and interactive television strategies and deployments. Steve has sat on more than 20 company boards. He received his MBA with distinction from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Notre Dame.
