Joe Klein, Columnist, TIME: Joe Kleins political column for TIME, In the Arena, appears each week, and he is a regular contributor to TIME.coms political blog, Swampland. He has written cover stories on topics including profiles of U.S. Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, and his weekly columns cover the Middle East, presidential politics and elections. Klein joined TIME in 2003. Previously, Klein served as Washington correspondent for The New Yorker and as a political reporter for Newsweek. He has also been a political columnist at New York magazine. He has written articles and book reviews for The New Republic, the New York Times, the Washington Post, LIFE and other publications. Klein began his journalism career as a reporter with the Essex County Newspapers in Massachusetts in 1969. He has worked as a reporter for WGBH-TV in Boston, as a news editor at The Real Paper, and as contributing editor and Washington bureau chief for Rolling Stone. In 1996, Klein anonymously wrote the critically acclaimed roman à clef novel Primary Colors, based upon the 1992 Presidential race. The novel spent 25 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, spending nine weeks at number one. His follow-up political novel was The Running Mate. His most recent work, published in 2006, is Politics Lost: How American Democracy Was Trivialized By People Who Think Youre Stupid, which poses a critical look at the manufactured and focus-group-tested nature of todays politics. He is also the author of The Natural: the Misunderstood Presidency of Bill Clinton, Payback: Five Marines After Vietnam and Woody Guthrie: A Life. Klein is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Peter Khiss Award, which honors outstanding reporting on New York City government and public affairs. He has twice received the National Headliner award for best magazine column. Klein graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in American Civilization. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a former Guggenheim fellow. Klein lives with his wife and two children in Westchester County, New York, and he is also the father of two adult sons.
Mark McKinnon, Vice Chairman, Public Strategies, former strategist, George W. Bush and Senator John McCain: Political strategist Mark McKinnon is best known for his switch from working with Democratic candidates to Republican George W. Bush. McKinnon, who advised the president on television ads during his election campaign, is considered a part of the president's inner-circle. McKinnon has worn a lot of hats in his career. At onetime he wrote songs for for Kris Kristofferson. Even more unusual in the fiercely partisan world of national politics, he is a lifelong Democrat. In 1997, McKinnon met then Gov. Bush at dinner and changed his mind about the politician. He says that he liked him and that's why he decided to cross-parties and work for his gubernatorial reelection campaign. McKinnon's first foray into the world of politics was his decision to run for Editor of the Daily Texan, while he was a student at the University of Texas at Austin. He went on to work on several Democratic political campaigns. He was a spokesman for Gov. Mark White and went on to work on the campaign of former Louisiana Governor Buddy Roemer. He turned down several opportunities to work for Bill Clinton, first when he was Governor of Arkansas and then again when he was president.
Donna Brazile, Democratic Strategist and CNN Contributor: Veteran Democratic political strategist Donna Brazile is an adjunct professor, author, and syndicated columnist. Ms. Brazile began her political career at the age of nine when she worked to support the campaign of a city council candidate who promised to build a playground in her neighborhood. Four decades and innumerable state and local campaigns later, she has worked on every presidential campaign from 1976 through 2000, when she served as presidential campaign manager for former Vice President Al Gore. Author of the best-selling autobiography Cooking with Grease: Stirring the Pots in American Politics, Ms. Brazile is an adjunct professor at Georgetown University and a senior lecturer at the University of Maryland. In the media, she serves as a political contributor on CNN; consultant to ABC News; regularly appearing commentator on ABCs This Week with George Stephanopoulos; and frequent contributor to NPRs Political Corner. In print and online, she is a columnist for Roll Call and Ms.; and is a content contributor to BlackAmericaWeb.com. Washingtonian named Ms. Brazile one of the 100 most powerful women and Essence named her one of the top 50 women in America. The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation has bestowed upon her its award for political achievement. Ms. Brazile dedicates herself to strengthening the American democratic process as chair of the Democratic National Committees Voting Rights Institute, established in 2001 to help protect and promote the rights of all American citizens to participate in the electoral process. Her passion is encouraging young people to vote, work within the system to strengthen it, and run for public office. Former Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco appointed Ms. Brazile, a New Orleans native, a member of the board of directors of the Louisiana Recovery Authority, the guiding agency charged with leading the states rebuilding process in the aftermath of two catastrophic hurricanes. Matthew Dowd, Chief Strategist, Bush-Cheney '04, Political Contributor, ABC News: Duri ng the past twenty-five years, Matthew Dowd has helped shape strategies and campaigns for CEOs, corporations, foundations, governments, candidates, and presidents. He is a founding partner of ViaNovo, an international brand positioning firm. Matthews recent political work includes serving as the Chief Strategist on two winning reelection efforts for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006 and for President George W. Bush in 2004. His innovative approach on the 2004 and 2000 campaigns led the bi-partisan American Association of Political Consultants to name him Strategist of the Year. In the 1990s, Matthew was President and founding partner of Public Strategies, Inc, an international public affairs firm. While at PSI, Matthew advised a wide variety of corporate clients and helped former Democrat Texas Lieutenant Governor Bob Bullock win election and re-election. He began his career as a member of Democrat U.S. Senator Lloyd Bentsen's staff. A contributor to many news outlets, Matthew teaches at the University of Texas LBJ School of Public Affairs. Hilary B. Rosen, CNN Political Contributor; and Political Director and Washin gton Editor at large, HuffingtonPost.com: Hilary B. Rosen, Political Director, Editor-at-Large for The Huffingtonpost.com and CNN Political Contributor is a respected figure in the world of politics and entertainment. She is the former Chairman and chief executive officer of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the trade group representing the U.S. sound recording industry where she served for 17 years before retiring in June 2003.At RIAA, Rosen was regarded as a force in the entertainment industry with her name appearing regularly on various, influential year-end power lists including Entertainment Weeklys "Annual Power List of the 101 Most Influential People In Entertainment," The Hollywood Reporters Power 50. The Industry Standard magazine named her as one 21 executives who most artfully navigated the year in technology and Digital Coast Magazine named her in the top ten of the 50 most important people in the convergence between entertainment and technology. She was named as one of 10 Ladies who Launch Entertainment Trends by The New York Post. RIAA was consistently ranked as one of Washingtons most effective trade associations when Rosen was at the helm. She managed a staff of 200 people and a budget of $50 million. She was innovative in creating new revenue streams for RIAA and the recording industry in the areas of licensing, marketing and enforcement. In January 2007 she launched OurChart.com with Ilene Chaiken and other prominent women. OurChart.com is an online advertiser supported, social network and entertainment website based on the successful television show, The L Word. It is a joint venture with CBS, Inc and Showtime Networks. Rosen served as President of the site through May of 2008 and remains on the Board of Directors. Rosen maintains her involvement and influence within the media industry as an advisor to various companies on digital content distribution, consumer strategies and public relations for entertainment and media properties. A veteran of Washington and Capitol Hill, Rosen is well known for her expertise on the political, legislative and public affairs process and was instrumental in the passage of numerous public laws. She is a sought-after advisor to many Democratic candidates for federal and local offices. She also has an admired 25-year pro bono history of lobbying for LGBT civil rights laws and responsible AIDS policy. Out Magazine named her as one of the 50 Most Powerful Gay and Lesbian Americans. Hilary was a founder of Rock the Vote, the organization that promotes youth political involvement. She currently serves on several non-profit boards including The Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the Creative Coalition, and the Center for American Progress Action Fund. Prior to joining the RIAA in 1987, Rosen was a government affairs specialist with her own firm and prior to that at Liz Robbins Associates a prominent Washington lobbying firm. Earlier in her career, Rosen worked for former Governor Brendan Byrne (D-NJ) and US Senator Bill Bradley (D-NJ). She served as the transition director in 1992 for then newly elected U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) whom she also served as Washington representative when Feinstein was Mayor of San Francisco. She is a graduate of George Washington University and lives in Washington DC with her family.
John Roberts anchors American Morning with Kiran Chetry. Based in New York, Roberts began anchoring CNNs flagship morning program in April 2007. Previously, Roberts served as CNNs senior national correspondent and as anchor of This Week at War, the networks renowned weekly program examining developments in the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and around the globe. As a member of the "Best Political Team on Television," Roberts has reported live from major political events including both the Democratic and Republican Conventions and the presidential debates. He has conducted interviews with newsmakers and nearly every candidate during this election cycle, with an issues-oriented approach, focusing on what voters care about instead of the typical horserace discussion. He reported live from Iraq during the U.S. mid-term elections and has reported from combat zones all over the world, included the 2006 Israeli-Hezbollah conflict, coverage of which earned CNN an Edward R. Murrow award. A veteran broadcaster and award-winning journalist, Roberts joined CNN in February 2006 after more than 14 years with CBS News, during which he served as its chief White House correspondent and chief medical correspondent, anchor of the weekend editions of the CBS Evening News and anchor of the CBS Morning News.During his time at CBS News, Roberts anchored live coverage and reported on-site from many major breaking stories. He was embedded with the U.S. Marines during the war with Iraq, transmitting live reports as the battalion advanced toward Baghdad. He also anchored the CBS Evening News coverage of Hurricane Katrina, the death of Pope John Paul II and the papal succession. He also reported live on the Atlanta Olympics bombing; the Oklahoma City bombing; the Northridge earthquake; the kidnap and murder of tourists in Uganda; many other devastating hurricanes, including Hugo and Andrew; the U.S. intervention in Haiti; the Cuban refugee crisis in Miami and the fire at the Branch Davidian compound near Waco, Texas.
