Embracing the Personalized Consumer - Entertainment, Technology and Commerce Making the Transition to the AlwaysOn Home The consumer lives in three digital environments, the home, work and mobile experiencing what we might call the always connected, digital lifestyle. In this session, we will address how the technology, the content providers and developers have adapted themselves to the evolving needs of the digital lifestyle, serving a home-based media, a worked based media and mobile media. Whether its a wirelessly connected home with set-tops, PCs, HDTVs and phone devices; a broadband mobile device, a fully loaded media friendly car, a broadband workspace or public space, the consumer is connected all the time, sending or receiving information and content. In this session, we will explore what it means to create and enable that fully connected universe. Scott Smyers, Senior Vice President, Network and Systems Architecture Division, Sony Electronics: Scott Smyers joined Sony Electronics in 1994, and is now Senior Vice President of the Network and Systems Architecture Division of Sony Electronics Inc. More than 20 years ago, Scott made the jump from academic research to industry, where he has since been very active in the areas of standardization, technology research and product development. Scotts particular area of focus is system architecture, system I/O and interfaces. In the 1990's, he performed pioneering work in the area of IEEE 1394 and standards related to digital transmission (IEC61883). Through his leadership as chairman of the 1394 Trade Association's AV Working Group over the course of seven years, Scott has served a pivotal role in bringing about a suite of standards that define consumer device discovery and control. He also founded and chaired the Digital Transmission Discussion Group which resulted in the so-called "5C" a.k.a "DTCP" copy protection system. Scott has served as CTO and member of the Board of Directors of the 1394 Trade Association, and on the UPnP Steering Committee. He now serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) and President of the DLNA Corporation, as well as Co-Chairman of the Management Committee of the Marlin Developer Community and Director of the Coral Consortium.
Jim Strothmann, Director, Product Strategy & Management, for Home Entertainment Initiatives at Scientific Atlanta, a Cisco Company - In his role, Jim is responsible for managing and charting the future course of the digital video delivery platforms which include the Explorer? 8000 and 8000HD Home Entertainment Servers and the MCP-100 DVR with DVD player and recorder. Prior to coming to Scientific Atlanta in 2004, Jim held various engineering and marketing positions at Thomson Consumer Electronics (RCA, GE, and ProScan brands), including Hardware Design Manager for RCA DVD Players and system engineer for DirecTV video decoders. He later managed worldwide connectivity for Thomson digital televisions. Jim began his career working for IBM as a design engineer in Lexington, KY. He received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1990, and an MBA from Indiana University in 1999.
Debbie Solomon is Senior Partner, Research Director at MindShare USA. She serves as an in-house consultant to the planning and buying groups on a wide variety of media research and planning issues. Her work encompasses all media disciplines and she has worked on all the agencys clients. She is also part of MindShares global Insights team. Debbie was at J. Walter Thompson when the media departments of J. Walter Thompson and Ogilvy & Mather merged to become MindShare. She joined J. Walter Thompson after working in the Media Research Department at Leo Burnett. This was preceded by marketing research positions at Britt & Frerichs, Quaker Oats, and Milton Bradley.She has won a number of industry honors. Recently, Media Magazine named her one of the 10 most influential people navigating the waters of the magazine business and MIN named her to the Sweet 16 in print. In 1998, she was named Top Kid Researcher by KidScreen magazine and earlyier, MediaWeek magazine elected her Media Research All-Star, largely for her work in childrens measurement. And Esquire magazine has honored her as a Woman We Love in Advertising. She has also won several corporate awards including WPPs Atticus Award for original published thinking for her paper on Wearout and J. Walter Thompsons White Pea award for media innovation. Debbie has also been one of a select group of people invited to meet with the International Olympic Committee to advise them on the state of media in the future. Debbie has an M.A. in psychology from Duke University and a B.A. in psychology from the University of Chicago. You may have seen her articles in Advertising Age, AdMap, Marketing and Media Decisions, the Journal of Advertising Research and the Journal of Media Planning. She sits on the AAAAs Consumer Magazine and Media Research Committees and chairs the Advertising Research Foundations Youth Research Council. She also is part of the Accrediting Council for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, the body that accredits Advertising programs at colleges and universities. In her spare time, Debbie indulges her creative side through silversmithing.
Patrice Lagrange, Senior Vice President, Products . Patrice joined DivX in March 2007 as Vice President and Group Business Manager for DivX CE Licensing and Software products. Now responsible for all DivX products, he leads a team focused on the development of an open media platform to allow digital content to flow seamlessly across the largest footprint of devices with the best user experience possible. Before joining DivX, Patrice most recently served as Director, Hosted Services at Adobe Systems. In more than two decades prior to Adobe, he honed his skills in product management and strategic planning in positions with companies like Silicon Graphics, Gemini Consulting and Aerospatiale. Patrice hails from France and has a graduate degree in computer science from the National Superior School of Aerospace, France, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Anu Kirk, Senior Director of Product Management, Real Networks: Senior Director of Product Management, Rhapsody RealNetworks, Inc. Anu Kirk cannot escape music, no matter how hard he tries. First a (bad) drummer, then a (slightly less awful) classical oboe player, he succumbed to the siren song of rock and roll and synthesizers during his teenage years. As one of the first employees at Internet start-up TuneTo.com, Anu helped pioneer Internet radio while working on the business plan, products, and technology for what would become Rhapsody. Following a merger with Listen.com, Anu served as product manager for Rhapsody 1.0 and launched Rhapsody411, one of the first mobile phone music directory services. After a spell at Liquid Digital Media, Anu returned to Rhapsody to lead the product development team and help spearhead the creation of Rhapsody's unlimited access music experience.
Jim Hollingsworth, Senior VP of Sales & Marketing, Gracenote: Bringing over 25 years of experience in the consumer electronics industry, Hollingsworth leads Gracenote's global marketing throughout the Americas, Asia and Europe. Joining Gracenote in 2004, Hollingsworth was previously President of ReplayTV a subsidiary of Denon and Marantz Holdings. Prior to D&M's acquisition of ReplayTV, Hollingsworth was Vice President of Worldwide Sales and Marketing, where he oversaw four major product lines (RIO Digital Audio, GoVideo, ReplayTV and Diamond Multimedia). Previously, Hollingsworth was Vice President of Marketing, Computer Products at Sony Corp., and was integral in the launch of the VAIO line of PCs and Peripherals. Prior to that, he spent two years at StarSight Telecast (now Gemstar, Inc.), where he was responsible for licensing StarSight's technologies to the consumer electronics industry. He began his career with nine years at Sony Consumer Electronics and an additional three years at Panasonic, where he held roles in sales and marketing.
Mary Francia, CEO & Managing Director, SeroWires: A global telecommunications
executive, Mary Francia is CEO and Managing Director at Serowires, a Consulting firm for Marketing & Technology, supporting clients build marketing and product strategy for next generation services and devices. Ms. Francia last assignment was Vice President Sales & Marketing Home Networks at Royal Philips Electronics where she joined to create a Telecom channel for sales of consumer devices in broadband and wireless entertainment applications. Ms Francia is now retained as Executive Consultant for their Innovation and Emerging Businesses. At Philips Consumer Electronics, she managed Telecom Strategic Alliances and with her direction, Philips launched products and services in access (DSL), communications (VoIP), and entertainment (Music & IPTV) with Telecom Operators over broadband networks as well as initiatives in consumer healthcare and R&D.
