Session A - DH17:
Content Syndication Business Models - From Internet to Wireless
From the start, as much as TV industry, the Net has been about aggregating viewers, gaining market share, and monetizing the user experience. To that end, the concept of licensing, content acquisition, and syndication have become a growing Net business phenomenon. While the content may not function in quite the same way as TV syndication, the value of "site features" from stock information, news updates, and ASP like add-ons to actual "programming," which might be a pay-per-view event or a long term "content partnership", syndication and licensing is very much at the core of E-commerce and Net success.

Dave and his marketing team gained a reputation for innovative and cost effective promotions including a breakthrough Titanic campaign which added 300,000 new customers, and cornering the market on the remaining inventory of the Star Wars Trilogy during the theatrical release window of The Phantom Menace. Reel.com was sold to the parent company of the Hollywood Video chain for $100MM in early 1999. The company was eventually split into two parts, with the commerce business sold to Buy.com, and the content business absorbed into Hollywood Video.
